On February 27th, electronic music pioneer Howard Jones will have the United States premiere of his brand new multi-media project, ENGAGE, at the Saban Theatre in Los Angeles.

Entirely fan-funded by PledgeMusic, ENGAGE is his most ambitious work to date, incorporating specially-commissioned visuals with music and an interactive live show.

ENGAGE is inspired by such diverse musical genres as electronica, contemporary classical and pop, fusing this audio mélange with other visual and literary arts such as ballet, modern dance and philosophy. When given the opportunity to interview Dale Bozzio for this article about her new album “Missing In Action” prior to today’s groundbreaking release, I jumped at the chance. I found Dale to be a warm and as expected, and a joy to interview. Dale has been hard at work developing this new album, but unlike other artists coming back after a while out of the spotlight, Dale Bozzio kept to her natural styling, not to embrace a style or sound that is not hers, but to “Rev Up” her trademark sound for a new generation to discover. Dale expressed her secret to her staying power and longevity to not paying attention to modern trends, Dale said in confidence “I sometimes place myself in a space where I wonder who could I be if I were not myself, and I realize I can’t, I can only be myself and to that I have to be true and keep moving forward”. As a self-proclaimed introvert, she becomes a different person, finding comfort on the stage to express herself without reservation and empowered.

When Missing Persons first hit the streets back in the 80’s, the group quickly rocketed to the top of the charts with a new and energetic sound that would become foundations for other artists to follow yet never duplicate. Dale Bozzio, the singer of Missing Persons was a new wave vision of beauty who would be many a young man’s dream girl. Prior to her formation of Missing Persons, Dale Bozzio had already created a legacy in the music industry through her work with Frank Zappa, whom was a close and dear friend of Dale that took a personal interest in her development.

Dale and I talked about her work with Frank Zappa and her memories of him and what it was like to be a part of his world, “I was truly blessed to have worked with Frank. I met him in 1976, which now feels like a million years ago. It kind of blows my mind that the things I talk about now like my career, my music and my past work are from 30 years ago, but it feels like it was just yesterday”. Dale Added “I am originally from Boston, in my youth I took elocution lessons to improve my speech, when I met Frank he said to me that I had a sound that would be remembered and to never change it”. In live performances, Dale would stride onto the stage and the roar of her fans would drown out the most powerful of sound systems, proof that Zappa was right.

With additional credits to her versatility such as videos, movies and her various ventures in music, including working with Frank Sinatra, Dale would be poised to accomplish anything she desired. Yet, as fate would have it, life would take dale from the stage and into the role of wife, mother and her legacy would be that of an enigma, leaving our sight as quickly as she arrived.

Or so it would seem…

Dale Bozzio, one of the most recognizable singers to come out of the ‘80s art rock movement, never stopped performing and has kept active in the music world, no longer gracing the large arenas but keeping her performances small and personal, keeping her music intimate with a loving and very loyal fan base. A true original whose signature vocal style was matched only by her iconic outfits that set the standard for flamboyant fashion in rock music is still, many years later, a beautiful and iconic artist that has decided to come back in full force to those that would be waiting. With a life’s story of ups and downs and personal achievements and tragedies, Dale Bozzio is back and she is a stronger and more powerful artist than she ever was.

The album, “Missing In Action”, released today on March 4th on both CD & Vinyl by Cleopatra Records, Is a masterpiece of originality, not a backtrack to the 80’s or a “comeback” attempt, but the creation of an audio tapestry that is, in essence, a tribute to who she was, is and will continue to be. “Missing In Action” was produced by the multi-talented Billy Sherwood, a member of the legendary progressive rock institution Yes, who worked closely with Dale to craft an album that can stand alongside the Missing Persons catalog while still showcasing Dale’s growth as both a performer and a person. Dale told me “it was amazing to work with Billy Sherwood, he could read me and we had a great creative chemistry”. In our interview, Dale reflected on the 10 song album, noting song titles rich with personal meaning such as “Do Or Die”, “Walk Into The Sun,” and “Speed Of Light”, ”The More We Love” and others are not just beautiful songs, they are also testimonials to her life. “I take things to the heart; I want to make things better for the world, I am not greedy or selfish, I just want to give”, I would say it is with this philosophy that Dale is able to create such great music.

“The More We Love,” which Dale recorded just days after her mother passed away and contains the most moving performance of Dale’s long, historic career as well as her admiration for a person that inspired her to be the best she could be. Dale dedicated much of her work to her family; in commentary she told me that her children were the light of her life and that they are a driving force for her and her greatest supporters “her best friends”. “Everything that I believe in and cherish is in them”, after a laugh, Dale became a bit serious and said “We sometimes take so much of our life for granted, we need to take every day as it comes and enjoy living for its own reward.. We have to face life with courage”.

“Missing In Action”, has been in the making for over two decades and is a triumph to Dale’s ability to empower herself and her fans through her music. To quote Dale Bozzio “Life is precious journey that we have to experience, every day that comes could be either the last day of our life, or the first day or our rebirth or new life and I never do anything that I could not go to sleep with on my conscious”.

Comic Book Review: The Manhattan Projects #'s 1 and 2 by Jonathan Hickman and Nick Pitarra, Published by Image Comics

Hickman (n): from an ancient forgotten tongue actually created in the far flung future, meaning “Holy crap that’s great writing”.  In case that wasn’t obvious enough, I’m a Hickman fan.  Admittedly, I can’t claim to have been so before he got to the mainstream.  Or more accurately, the mainstream caught up to him.  I first heard of him from his work on Fantastic Four.  When I finally sat down and read through his run on the book, I was hooked and have made FF and the re-launched Fantastic Four appointment reading every month when they come out.  I then was handed his book Pax Romana and I still have the LSD-like flashbacks from trying to wrap my brain around that book.  That’s a compliment by the way.  Then his recent Ultimates run had me ready to put The Manhattan Projects in a syringe and spike it into my vein.  Turns out you can’t inject books.  My bad.  Hickman’s high concept sci-fi has been crack for me and with this book he throws in another happy pill for me.  History.  More specifically, an alternate history about The Manhattan Project.  For those who don’t know, the people involved are the ones who created the Atom Bomb.  He takes the history of the Manhattan Project, makes it plural and sets about brewing a history/sci-fi stew that is quite a mental meal.

The first issue deals with Robert Oppenheimer and his induction into the Project(s).  While introducing us to what the Manhattan Projects (and the incredibly entertaining “man in charge” General Groves) is going to be, we also get a biography of Oppenheimer and his twin brother Joseph.  They couldn’t be more different of course, but at the same time they really are the same.  It’s a classic trope, the old flip sides of the same coin, but it’s done quite well here.  The art by Nick Pitarra is somewhat reminiscent of Frank Quitely.  A lot of the pages that are the “now” portion of the story are laid out in a way that makes the panels seem like shots from a widescreen movie.  As far as size and shape go.  When the action hits, and boy does it, he does take full advantage of his page.  What I really enjoyed though, was the page layouts in the biographical sections.  They take FULL advantage of the uniqueness of comics, presenting the life stories of the twin Oppenheimer boys in all their similarity and disparate difference.  The panels are equal size in double page spread, with Robert’s life running along the top of the page and tinted blue, while Joseph’s runs along the bottom of the page tinted red.  Red is an incredibly appropriate color, I’ll assume you can guess why.  Joseph is definitely the scarred side of this coin, if you’ll allow me the reference.  Their back story and the “now” story culminate into an ending that had me cursing out loud (in the best way possible) and wanting the next issue very badly.

And this is why I waited until the second issue came out to start this book.  I had a feeling it was going to be enjoyable for me and Hickman knows how to leave you wanting more.  Also, I know it is poor grammar to start a sentence with and.  I’ve allowed myself to do it here because it seemed right for the point I was making.  After the holy s#!+ ending of issue one I dove right into issue two.  The point made at the end of the first issue is reference at one point in the book but is not the main story, and that’s okay.  Because once again we are off and running into the wild and crazy alternate history of the Manhattan Projects.  Einstein made a brief appearance in the first issue and there’s quite a bit more of him here.  Which means this is a comic I am going to try to share with my Dad.  A rare occurrence, believe me.  In issue two we are introduced to the other scientists that are part of the Manhattan Projects.  At least one of which needs to have his back story become a future issue.  You’ll see what I mean.  The main plot in this issue is centered on whether or not the members of the Project are okay with recruiting Nazi scientists to their cause now that World War II is winding down.  Richard Feynman is sent to Europe to accompany the U.S. Army as it takes the Nazi stronghold housing said scientists.  As usual I’ve been vague with details because I am adamantly opposed to spoiling a book.  Let’s just say you should never trust a Nazi scientist with a robotic arm.  More threads are sewn for future plots and I for one am quite excited to see where this all goes.  Since there’s pretty much one story going on this issue, no flashback biography, Pitarra takes a bit more advantage of his pages.  The layouts take more advantage of the page than before.  That’s not a complaint about the first issue.  The layout styles employed there serviced that story perfectly.  That’s one of the highest compliments I think, the art perfectly serves the story it’s telling.  So many times panels seem to be static shots in some comics.  Not so here.  The panels serve the pace of the story and the story itself quite well.  The line work reminds me very much of Quitely and Darrow without seeming like Pitarra is apeing anyone.

All in all, there's some great storytelling going on here in both story and art.  As usual with something of this type, the devil is in the details so pay attention while reading.  Another thing I feel I may not have really put across is how fun the book is.  There’s a lot of concept and science and history being thrown around, but don’t let that scare you off.  It’s a really fun book, whether you know any of the history or not.  Hickman tells you what you need to know to enjoy the hell out of this book.  I cannot recommend it enough. Both issues are available now, go and get them!

Punk rock's poet laureate, Patti Smith ranks among the most influential female rock & rollers of all time. Ambitious, unconventional, and challenging, Smith's music was hailed as the most exciting fusion of rock and poetry since Bob Dylan's heyday. Smith followed her own muse wherever it took her, from structured rock songs to free-form experimentalism. Her most Avant-grade outings drew a sense of improvisation and interplay from free jazz, though they remained firmly rooted in noisy, primitive three-chord rock & roll. She obliterated the expectations of what was possible for women in rock, and stretched the boundaries of how artists of any gender could express themselves.

The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee's first career-spanning single CD collection, Outside Society, is a new collection of 18 signature songs remastered by Greg Calbi and Patti's band member Tony Shanahan from all ten of Smith's studio albums. The chronologically arranged tracks move from her 1975 debut album, Horses ("Gloria", "Free Money"), through her last release in 2007, Twelve ("Smells Like Teen Spirit").

Outside Society features brief recollections of each song written by Patti, who personally supervised the song choices.
