CD Review: Evil Monkey by Feisty Piranhas

A band is more than a group of guys or gals that travel around and play together, they are a unified spirit, bonded by a “musical blood” that flows through them. It is with this in mind, that when a band member passes from this realm, unexpectedly and oh so too young, we all mourn not just what they were, but what they could be.

Peter Alex Lust III was young, energetic and a fighter to the core, no stranger to hardship and with a history of beating the medical odds, not only had he become a great musician and frontman to the Feisty Piranhas, Peter also majored in Political Science at California State University at Channel Islands, graduated with a Bachelor's Degree and began to prepare himself for Law School. So his untimely death in December of 2013 was devastating to his band mates, but none more than the drummer of the band, who had seen Peter through all of his days in the Feisty Piranhas, through all his trials and tribulations in life, whom from day one loved peter more than life itself, the drummer, his father, Peter Lust Jr.

Since the death of Peter the younger, his father has held the band together and has created their new tribute album, Evil Monkey in memory of his son and 2 DVDs of Live Performances that chronicles and sets the foundation for his son’s legacy in music. These releases have captured the very essence of his son and the wonderful music he brought forth to his many fans and the pride to his family’s hearts.

Evil Monkey by Feisty Piranhas is a collected work of songs recorded ad tracked just prior to Peter’s death, but not completed, his father and the band completed the album and has released it to the public on their website, all proceeds of the CD sales and the DVD sales will support The Music Foundation For The Memory of Peter Alex Lust III.

The new album was mastered at the famed Bernie Grundman in Hollywood. Though dubbed a “pop-punk, rock & reggae” band, they are much more; they have vibrancy and a mystique that is quite difficult to put into words.

With driving rhythm and a pinch of rebel angst, a hard edge and a balanced, finished sound that rivals artists of longer past, the Feisty Piranhas are formidable. Feisty Piranhas have been compared to bands like NOFX, Green Day, Rush, Pink Floyd and for good reason; they have that something special that makes their music both hypnotic an enduring. It is, I feel, for this reason that this album Evil Monkey, will be the greatest memory of Peter Alex Lust III that will be like his spirit, an eternal reminder of his life.

Tracks on this album that stand out the most is a difficult phrase to say since all the tracks are momentous in themselves and all together magnificent.

I am however especially fond of what I feel are the best of the best on Evil Monkey – the songs  “Changing the World”, “This Is Her”, “Armageddon”, ”Shenanigans” and “Show Me A Free Man And I’ll Show You A Fool”.

For all the power and energy in the music, it is also very haunting, knowing that this voice is singing to us from beyond, proving there is a heaven and that an afterlife may be filled with eternal joy if a person like Peter Alex Lust is there to prepare a place for us to stay.

It is said, that when we mourn ones passing, it is not because they are no longer on this earth with us, but because we are here without them, with your permission and with a tissue in hand, I will say to you, with this album you can hold back your tears for another day.

Peter is here with us, listening to him sing and play, “Changing the World”, one day at a time.

Album Review: Pioneers by Siena Root

The Rock & Roll of the Late 60s and 70s brought to us visionary musical genius that sang with a deep growl and played with a hypnotic and fiery passion, as time continued, many of these voices changed or simply slipped away into the night on the blues train to obscurity. The British Invasion brought us bands like Deep Purple, The Who, Led Zeppelin and others that had the Blues induced power chords and the driving beat to back it up. Now, in the tradition of true “Stoner Rock” a Swedish band named Siena Root takes us on a new ride through the parallel dimension of both time and space.

Siena Root came to life in Stockholm in the late 90's and is today considered one of the pioneering Swedish bands in old school rock music. In 2004, when the internet and mp3’s were the new deal, the band persistently released their debut album as a double vinyl LP. Listeners would start carrying down their old turntables from the attic, thus marking the first steps in what we today refer to as “the retro trend”. The live act came to be an uncompromising show, using all the heavy vintage equipment that most bands lack the strength and passion to carry along. Even a full size multi-track tape recorder was brought on tour during the recording of the live album. With the immense dedication to do it all the way, Siena Root would always stand out from the others.

Since the beginning, Siena Root has mostly performed as an experimental collective, the foundation being a trio with guitar, bass and drums. Several guest musicians would complete the line-up, and the fans would never expect to see the same show twice. The result was a rare musical diversity throughout the first five albums and hundreds of live shows. Some of these skilled musicians eventually became more frequent, until Siena Root finally decided to settle as a solid five-piece rock act. The adventure continues, and the pioneers are getting ready to plant another flag in the land of root rock!

 

 

This is the US debut album, from Siena Root, described as a heavy, heady blend of Deep Purple & Iron Butterfly. This Psychedelic / Folk Rock ensemble, Sam Riffer on Bass, Love Forsberg on Percussion, Erik "Errka" Petersson on Organ, Matte Gustavsson on Guitar and the amazing Jonas "Joe Nash" Åhlen providing Vocals have a sound that rivals the bands that paved the way for many of today’s Rock bands yet have a unique and tremendous sound of their own. Presently working on a world tour, Siena Root will definitely make grandstand appearances through Europe, and quite possibly the United States.

Siena Root’s newest album Pioneers is a testament to the skill of the group and a reverence to the style which is their devotion. Pioneers, released on Cleopatra Records is a must listen and will love album for the serious rocker and for the new to the genre collector, Pioneers, the bands fifth Studio album and first US Release album this album completes their discography and is only the tip of the massive “rockberg” that flows through the ocean of time. Pioneers is a collection of powerful songs and includes a fantastic tribute / cover of Whole Lotta Love which as many know is a difficulty to empower, until now I had never heard a rendition with as much feeling and definition as the original. This album is a definite 5 Star, will shine forever release and already looks to be one of the Top Albums for 2015. As quoted in interview, Mick Box of the legendary Rock Group Uriah Heep said “It’s nice to hear a band like Siena Root playing it for real in this overly-processed world that we live in. Power to them, and I wish them all the success in the world!” – We at Xombiewoof agree in total!

Trini Lopez, “At PJ's” Special 50th Anniversary Numbered Limited Edition on 200g Vinyl

Exhibit Records announces the release of a Special 50th Anniversary Numbered Limited Edition album of Trini Lopez, "At PJ’s." The 200 gram vinyl record is beautifully presented in a sturdy old style gatefold jacket featuring the original album art work and for the first time includes the lyrics to all the tunes. The back of each album is foil-stamped with its unique number.

With the release of this album in April 1963 Trini Lopez became one of the biggest singing stars of the Folk Revival. Trini Lopez, "At PJ's" made it to #2 on the Billboard charts and stayed in the Top 40 for over a year. The album included the chart-topping "If I Had a Hammer" which reached number one in 36 countries and was a radio favorite for many years. The hit single sold more than 4 million copies and the album sold over a million and was awarded a gold record.

This was the album that made Lopez an instant success and the live party-a-go-go atmosphere of the record did much to put Trini's likable energy over the top. What Lopez did, at the head of a trio was to make folk-pop swing. Other songs include "This Land Is Your Land," and "Gotta Travel On." It could be surmised that by treating such material in this fashion, Lopez had a tiny influence upon the subsequent folk-rock movement...though, Lopez was more the all-around entertainer with a Latin lilt than he was a pure folk singer, so you also get "America" (from West Side Story), "La Bamba," Ray Charles' "What'd I Say," "Volare," and "When the Saints Go Marching In."
