  wishboneashgroup

bluehorizoncoverBlue Horizon by Wishbone Ash

Label: Solid Rockhouse Records

Available at Wishboneash.com and Through Their Online Store

Follow them on Facebook

Wishbone Ash is a group that is synonymous with what is known as Progressive Music, like their contemporaries, Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake and Palmer, King Crimson, Camel and Spooky Tooth. These artists reimagined music and created a hypnotic allure that would capture the listener, ensnare the senses and Wisk you away to another world. With introspective lyrics and multi-dimensional harmonies, percussion rhythms and keyboard melodies their music transcended space and time and was, in itself, timeless. Originally formed in 1969, Wishbone Ash now has more than 24 original studio recording, several live albums and DVDs of their amazing performances to their credit. The group has appeared at all the major music festivals and enjoys a history with some of the world’s classic music labels, Universal and Atlantic Records.

Fast forward to today, many of these living legends still perform, others have sunk back into the shadows of time from which they were born, and unfortunately, some are no longer on this plane, yet perform in perfect dimension in our memories. Wishbone ash is one of the select few that not only still perform, but still create new music with the same ferocity, energy and power, that made them the influence of other artists that we listen to today. Longtime fans and new converts will find that Wishbone Ash offers an undeniable concert experience

Citing Wishbone Ash as an influence on their style, members of Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, Lynyrd Skynyrd and some of the guitar-based Indie/Alternative bands, have all taken a little something from the legendary twin-guitar approach of Wishbone Ash. Truly, there is no other rock band on the planet that has done more innovation in guitar melodies than the Ash. Back in the day, Wishbone Ash cut their teeth on the US stadium circuit first opening for The Who. Once they began headlining in the States, Wishbone’s opening acts included Springsteen, Kiss and Aerosmith.

Blue Horizon Teaser

Wishbone Ash’s new album, Blue Horizon on Solid Rockhouse Records, includes guest artist Pat McManus playing fiddle, Fans will recall McManus made an appearance on 2011’s Elegant Stealth and also co-wrote one of the songs, “Can't Go It Alone,” with Andy Powell. Blue Horizon features two songs written by Aynsley Powell (Powell's son) and one by former Wishbone Ash guitarist Roger Filgate.

Blue Horizon is, like Wishbone Ash, Powerful, Energetic and hypnotic. The songs don’t just “play” on this album, then transcend from the stereo and swirl around the air like smoke of Incense, twisting and turning like wafts of smoke entering into you yet never leaving. You are taken to the edge of the world and shown what is beyond and then as it comes to an end you are gently released like a leaf upon the winds to gently come back to the earth, yes, a very dramatic as prose heavy description, but these are the only words that can describe the torrent of emotions within Blue Horizon.

If you are a true fan of Progressive Music and Guitar Rock that was the foundation of modern music, you have to get Blue Horizon by Wishbone Ash, if not just because, in itself this album is the culmination of several lifetimes of talent and the diversity in skills of musical geniuses, but it will let you understand the music of today differently and with greater appreciation. Blue Horizon is as the teachings of the elders, the wisdom of ages and the energy of the cosmos, all neatly packages in a single kiss of sunlight.

I would like to conclude this review with a segment of an interview with Andy Powell of Wishbone Ash, originally written for another unspecified publication, Andy was quoted to say, “There is a feeling, an attitude of honesty; four musicians working together for a common cause and mining a musical seam. The lyrical themes are deep while being flexible and universal in nature and the music reflects this. It’s strange how a song or piece of music immediately dictates to us the sounds or tonal colors we might use. It’s like a painter with a palette of paints at his disposal.” -Quote Excerpts from original Interview

.Look upon the Blue Horizon traveler, and be weary no more-

Super Duper Alice Cooper is the twisted tale of a teenage Dr. Jekyll whose rock n’ roll Mr. Hyde almost kills him. It is the story of Vincent Furnier, a preacher’s son who struck fear into the hearts of parents as ALICE COOPER, the ultimate rock star of the bizarre. From the advent of Alice as front man for a group of Phoenix freaks in the 60’s to the hazy decadence of celebrity in the 70s to his triumphant comeback as 80s glam metal godfather, we will watch as Alice and Vincent battle for each other’s’ souls. Alice’s story is told not only by the man himself, but through exclusive interviews with members of the original ALICE COOPER band, Elton John, Iggy Pop, John Lydon, and Dee Snider.

Super Duper Alice Cooper is the creation of Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn at Banger Films, producers of Iron Maiden: Flight 666 (2009 SXSW Audience Choice Winner) and Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage (2010 Grammy-nominated and Tribeca Audience Choice Winner), and much-lauded filmmaker Reginald Harkema, winner of the TIFF Special Jury Prize for his film Monkey Warfare.

Jimi Hendrix: a Life to Experience

130909_hearmytrain_cover_0PBS to air American Masters: Hear My Train A Comin’ in conjunction with Sony Legacy’s Release of Jimi Hendrix Experience – Miami Pop Festival: a Double Shot of Rock History comes to life in sight and sound.

Article by Joseph Timmons: Xombiewoof Magazine

On November 5th, 2013 PBS will air a documentary on the brief but amazing life of one who is synonymous with the development of today’s Rock & Roll music culture. At a point in time that would be Jimi Hendrix’s 70th birthday, PBS and Sony Legacy pay tribute to Jimi’s life and his gift to humanity.

American Masters: Hear My Train A Comin’ shows from beginning to untimely end, a career in music that is the stuff of legend, with interviews by those who knew and loved Jimi personally, worked with him, and through it all saw him as a man destined for immortality.

A pioneering electric guitarist, Hendrix (Nov. 27, 1942 — Sept. 18, 1970) had only four years of mainstream exposure and recognition, but his influential music and riveting stage presence left an enduring legacy. Hear My Train A Comin’ traces the guitarist’s remarkable journey from his hardscrabble beginnings in Seattle, through his stint as a US Army paratrooper, unknown sideman to R&B stars such as Little Richard, Joey Dee and the Isley Brothers and his discovery and ultimate international stardom.

The film also features revealing glimpses into Jimi and his era from the three women closest to him: Linda Keith (the girlfriend who introduced Jimi to future manager Chas Chandler), Faye Pridgon (who befriended Hendrix in Harlem in the early 1960s) and Colette Mimram (one of the era’s most influential fashion trendsetters who provided inspiration for Hendrix’s signature look and created such memorable stage costumes as the beaded jacket Hendrix famously wore at Woodstock). The film details the meteoric rise of the Experience, the creation of his groundbreaking music, the building of Electric Lady Studios, his state-of-the-art recording facility in Greenwich Village and concludes with poignant footage from his final performance in Germany in September 1970, just 12 days before his death at age 27.

Janie Hendrix, Sister and President of Hendrix Experience LLC, an organization devoted and entrusted with the preservation of Jimi Hendrix archives and his enduring legacy was quoted “American Masters: Hear My Train A Comin’ is an in-depth look at the life and legacy of Jimi Hendrix with his own words” she went on to say “His Impression on the world through his genius, music and talent continue to magically touch the lives of ensuing generations”.

130909_miamipop_coverIn addition to the ground breaking documentary, a Sony Legacy recording is releasing rare audio recordings of his performance at the Miami Pop Festival. In May of 1968, the Miami Pop Festival, the first event promoted by Michael Lang, who would go on to organize the first Woodstock fifteen months later, was to be the first recordings of Jimi playing live at the first ever major concert festival on the east coast. Michael Lang and Ric O’Barry, Inspired by the Monterey Pop Festival of 1967, where Jimi Hendrix, lit fire to his Guitar during his US debut, contracted Jimi Hendrix for this 2 day festival that would take Jimi Hendrix into the hearts of millions.

Performing, at the time his newest material, which are now standards in every artist play list, “Hey Joe”, “Fire”, “Foxy Lady”, “Tax Free”, “Purple Haze”, Red House”, “Hear My Train A Comin’” and more, this album takes you back in time when Hendrix first stepped onto the US stages and into our hearts.

Jimi Hendrix Experience – Miami Pop Festival will be available for purchase on November 5th, 2013, the same day PBS will air American Masters: Hear My Train A Comin’ and is expected to be the most viewed documentary of a Musicians life, the organization and dedication to detail of this presentation, and the quality of the audio on the album is magnificent and will entertain, educate and enlighten all that witness the life of Jimi Hendrix.

Legacy Recordings and Columbia Records are proud to announce the release of the Bob Dylan Complete Album Collection Vol. One, a colossal box set encompassing the entire official discography of the American songwriter-performer who's revolutionized folk, pop and rock music over the past half century with a profoundly influential catalog of songs and sounds. Bob Dylan Complete Album Collection, Volume One will be available on Tuesday, November 5, 2013.

Beginning with tracks recorded for his eponymous 1962 Columbia Records debut album, the Bob Dylan Complete Album Collection Vol. One follows Dylan's restless transformations across six decades as a singer, a songwriter, a concert performer and a studio artist who's continually finding fresh ways of expressing and exploring the varieties of human experience, worldly and other, with music.

Bob Dylan Complete Album Collection, Volume One brings together for the first time, on two "Side Tracks" discs, a wealth of previously released non-album singles, tracks from Biograph and other compilations, songs from films and more.

The CD boxed set contains 35 studio titles (including the first-ever North American release of 1973's Dylan album on CD), 6 live albums, the 2-CD "Side Tracks," and a hardcover book featuring extensive new album-by-album liner notes penned by Clinton Heylin and a new introduction written by Bill Flanagan.

Bob Dylan Complete Album Collection, Volume One will be available as a limited-edition harmonica-shaped USB stick containing all the music, in both MP3 and FLAC lossless formats, with a digital version of the hardcover booklet, housed in a deluxe numbered box.

Each of the albums in the Bob Dylan Complete Album Collection, Volume One is being made available in state-of-the-art sound, with 14 titles* remastered especially for this set.

Coinciding with the release of the Bob Dylan Complete Album Collection, Volume One, four decade-specific digital album collections--Bob Dylan - The Complete Album Collection - The 60's, The 70's, The 80's, The 90's - 00's--will be released as online downloads. A fifth digital album collection, Bob Dylan - The Original Mono Recordings, the artist's first 8 studio albums in mono, will also be released as downloads.

Dylan is currently enjoying the critical and commercial success of The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971), the latest release in the acclaimed Bootleg Series of previously unreleased live and studio recordings. The Bob Dylan Complete Album Collection Volume Two, slated for release next year, will compile the entire Bootleg Series for the first time.

Bob Dylan and his band will be touring Europe and the UK this fall beginning with a concert in Oslo on October 10.

"There is not a bigger giant in the history of American music," said President Barack Obama when presenting Dylan with the nation's highest civilian honor at the Presidential Medal of Freedom Ceremony on May 29, 2012. "A modern-day troubadour, Bob Dylan established himself as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. The rich poetry of his lyrics opened up new possibilities for popular song and inspired generations. His melodies have brought ancient traditions into the modern age. More than 50 years after his career began; Bob Dylan remains an eminent voice in our national conversation and around the world."

Bob Dylan is perhaps the only recording artist to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, a Pulitzer Prize (a special citation awarded in 2008 for "his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power"), an Academy Award for Best Original Song ("Things Have Changed") alongside multiple Grammy Awards.

Review of In Search Of Beethoven & In Search Of Mozart

Article first published as DVD Review: In Search Of Beethoven and In Search Of Mozart on Blogcritics.

This Special Collector's Edition-Three Disk Box Set of the Microcinema Exclusive educational documentary series titled In Search Of Beethoven & In Search Of Mozart is as much brilliant as the composers whose lives are touched upon. Directed by Phil Grabsky, these two documentaries take you not only into the lives of both Beethoven and Mozart, but into their worlds, what inspired them, created them and gave them reason and cause to create the music that has spanned time and is still as unique and powerful as when it was created.

Filmed in locations in and around the European cities, homes and haunts of the composers, In Search Of Beethoven & In Search Of Mozart, the films take you into the very footsteps of the masters, it is obvious that there was extensive research into the lives of both Beethoven and Mozart. There are commentaries by noted Historians, Conductors and World Renown Performers, whom have made the works of Beethoven and Mozart the focus of their careers. The viewer gets a glimpse into the private journals of both Beethoven and Mozart, and find out the until now known reasons for why they lived as they did and why they were not only well known and famous in their lives, but also the tortured geniuses that would invoke, in their music, images of love, hope and the divine.

Beethoven and Mozart, both musical contemporaries, living at the same time in very similar places, went on to lead very different lives, you learn of Beethoven’s desire to live an aristocratic life, how Mozart, at the age of five, wrote his first piano piece, at an age when most children are unable to play piano! In Search Of Beethoven & In Search Of Mozart show you the Highs and the Lows of the composer’s great lives in the era of invention and revolution.

I sat down to watch In Search Of Beethoven & In Search Of Mozart with my wife, both of us enjoy classical music and documentaries, we found ourselves riveted to our seats. The series is not “dry” or monotone, but vibrant and intriguing, the commentators/narrators spoke with enthusiasm and the information about the composers lives showed them as the “stars” of their times and as people whom fell prey to the same issues that we have today dealing with social matters, politics, war and personal issues, it was very dramatic. Shortly after our kids came into the room and they were interested too, my daughter, who is eight years old, was completely still and afterwards watched the third disk, which had extras like deleted scenes, interviews and complete movements by the symphonies and concerto ensembles that performed pieces by the composers in the documentary. I feel my children learned about the lives of Beethoven and Mozart just as much as I did, and it was a great way to expose them to culture and music.

It is difficult to tell you more without exposing too many of the secrets of the documentaries In Search Of Beethoven & In Search Of Mozart, the series will be available for purchase on May 31st, 2011 at your local retailer, online or at the web site for the series http://www.microcinemadvd.com/, I would advise you to mark your calendar and get this series.
