Colette Miller Giving the World Wings

By Mike Ritchie

1395967_10152487420963178_5303108641397213773_n-1Colette Miller (www.facebook.com/colettemiller9?fref=ts) has been spreading her spirit and talent via the painting palate for many years. Creating her own work inspired by dreams, animals, life and other worthy causes she’s involved in. Since the early 90’s she’s painted animals on everything from bridges to walls to business trucks from Virginia to New York, California to Africa and Tanzania but the art that’s really ‘taken flight’ has been her signature angel wings https://www.facebook.com/colettemillerartist . There’s no bull in her ‘wings’, but they are in high demand across the world as everyone from tourists, locals, businessmen and celebrities want a piece of her brush stroke.

Her art has been influenced by many cultures including the Middle East, Europe, China, Tibet, Africa (where she painted a mural for an orphanage) and the Americas. She finds vast emotional, physical, mental stimulus and inspiration in the surrounding environment and her hand spreads the ideas across the canvas. She’s painted since childhood, making her designs reflect the peace of the composition’s subject and colors. The spiritualism used in its creation and found in its projection is a driving force in her desire to create a mystical remembrance.

Her angelic talent has caught the attention/interest of artistic minds from Kenya, West Virginia, Virginia, LA, Sydney and Washington DC with future work scheduled for New York and a recent trip to Australia commissioned by Arts Brookfield earned her seven spots at major properties in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney which were on display throughout October. A Nairobi Kenya boxing association named their team Koyale Wings Miller after her art.

Colette-Miller-Wings-2The creation of her art can come from oil based mediums, or acrylic paint for the wings, on top of canvas, paper or wood with UV paint sunscreen, varnishes and sometimes placed on adhesive vinyl when pieces need to be removed. But there’s no limit to what she’ll use if there’s a need to expand. She also makes sure her work is durable so it’ll last outdoors against the elements.

She’s populated the world with around 30 pairs so far, from her current residence fittingly The City of Angels to the impoverished walls of Nairobi. She’s painted in some rough neighborhoods, intent to make her art instill feelings of safety and hope against the most barren and desolate backgrounds.

Her first pair was inspired from a need she saw in society to repel negativity in the spring of 2012 and by July she’d completed them. The collective message of each pair in part says “we can be angels in this world and the good in humanity.” They are at face value and in detail nice, pleasant images, unique to look at and full of abstraction and real symbols of peace. Life sized so people can stand between them and feel good about themselves, angelic, protected or all three. Her first two creations were graffiti art, though illegal, garnered positive attention from the community inspiring many to take spontaneous pictures with them and as more were made posting pictures on social media. After taking a movable pair to the Autumn Lights Festival and exposing them to a larger audience she was granted permission for a Main Street display by mutual friend Joe Moller via TK Nagano. She also received attention from the LA Mayor who came out, took photos and became a supporter.

Hungry_PandaHer animal art comes from oils and canvas and a meditative compensation she receives from her mind and life experiences as an impressionist. She characterizes herself as a colorist, letting the different shades harmonize with themselves. Her pieces include Alien on a Plane with Crows, Crows on a Fence, Flying Pink Pig, and China’s Hungry (Panda in a Bamboo Forest).

She’s also looked into the camera’s eye veering into editing and producing for projects on water shortage in Burkina Faso, eco-news in Tibet and sustainable fishing in Alaska. Also presently in post is a film on corruption in Kenya. She also paints sets for TV and movies in LA.

For those familiar with the band GWAR, Miller has early musical ties to the band of dressed up monster players and gore-fed, spewing noise makers. From 1986-87, she embraced playing Amazina aka GWAR Girl, after sharing the stage briefly with Heather Broome aka The Temptress, who left in 1986, she was the sole female in the group in the early days of the original band performing on stage. Working construction to survive, enduring mother-nature’s wrath and cold showers while the band was living in the old dairy plant turned warehouse, the Milk Bottle, in Richmond Virginia she studied/worked on art, attending VCU. While attending university she also played keyboards in MILK, a spontaneous performance art band with Jim Thompson, Ron Curry, Tom Harris, Mark Linkous and Dave Brockie aka the voice of GWAR, Oderus Urungus. Miller along with the others did double duty a few times when Milk opened for GWAR putting the GWAR garb on directly after. Later on in ‘87 personal differences caused Miller to leave.

Screen_Shot_2014-09-20_at_10.58.36_AMEarlier this year in March Brockie passed away from an accidental heroin overdose closing the 50 billion year run of his alter ego and the sole original member, ending an era and leaving the bands future unknown. A private service was followed by a public memorial held at Hadad’s Lake in Richmond with fans, friends and former band members including Miller paying their respects, ending with a Viking funeral send off to the Oderus Urungus costume and character. Miller recently created a pair of wings for the GWAR tribute show in LA featuring rare footage, drawings, costume designs and band tour shirts covering the 1990-1994 era(Miller was in South Africa during that time) with photos by former slave pit girl Melanie Mandl.

Screen_Shot_2014-09-23_at_10.10.17_AMMiller has very cherished memories of Brockie and the bands beginnings. Each era of GWAR had chapters and hers was the most vintage and less raunchy and bloody. She joked “I was in the rated G version” if that’s possible. She’s seen the evolution/reinvention of characters that have kept the band and its legacy going strong. He was and still is very popular and fondly remembered in Richmond as he is around the world. Thirty years later, she’s happy to see a female member take an active front stage, vocal position. Michael Bishop aka Blothar was chosen as Urungus’s successor accompanied by the first female presence since 2000, Vulvatron aka Kung Fu Dyke Kim Dylla. Miller saw the band for the first time in years earlier this month at the House of Blues and was impressed with the costumes and music. She also has a pair of wings in front of the venue.

Vulvatron and her large prosthetic blood spewing breasts made their debut this year at Riot fest in Chicago. The slave pit will never be the same. Though the two represent complete different era’s, Vulvatron as a strong, empowered female role showcases the ascension and prominence of women in the once all male dominated world of metal. It remains to be seen if all the scumdogs of the universe accept an Oderus-less GWAR and their new gor-i-fied reigning queen. Miller will always hold dear and sacred the original inspiration and spirit of what a ragtag bunch of art-school students started as an oddity in the mid-eighties in a cold milk bottle shaped warehouse that spawned and spanned a 30 year history.

Miller’s wings have become her trademark, recently transcending mediums into stained glass. Her next upcoming project will be a trip to Juarez Mexico for four pairs promoting messages of hope for humanity and it’s revitalization against drug cartels and violence. She’ll continue making them as long as there’s a demand, desire, need and a personal calling to create them while giving the world hope.

Interview with Dale Bozzio of Missing Persons Fame talks with us about her life, her career and her New Album “Missing In Action”

Xombiewoof Magazine Interviews Missing Persons’ Dale Bozzio

Dale Bozzio talks with us about her life, career and her New Album “Missing In Action”

Interview with Joseph Timmons – Xombiewoof Magazine

When given the opportunity to interview Dale Bozzio for this article about her new album “Missing In Action” prior to today’s groundbreaking release, I jumped at the chance. I found Dale to be a warm and as expected, and a joy to interview. Dale has been hard at work developing this new album, but unlike other artists coming back after a while out of the spotlight, Dale Bozzio kept to her natural styling, not to embrace a style or sound that is not hers, but to “Rev Up” her trademark sound for a new generation to discover. Dale expressed her secret to her staying power and longevity to not paying attention to modern trends, Dale said in confidence “I sometimes place myself in a space where I wonder who could I be if I were not myself, and I realize I can’t, I can only be myself and to that I have to be true and keep moving forward”. As a self-proclaimed introvert, she becomes a different person, finding comfort on the stage to express herself without reservation and empowered.

gallery26When Missing Persons first hit the streets back in the 80’s, the group quickly rocketed to the top of the charts with a new and energetic sound that would become foundations for other artists to follow yet never duplicate. Dale Bozzio, the singer of Missing Persons was a new wave vision of beauty who would be many a young man’s dream girl. Prior to her formation of Missing Persons, Dale Bozzio had already created a legacy in the music industry through her work with Frank Zappa, whom was a close and dear friend of Dale that took a personal interest in her development.

Dale and I talked about her work with Frank Zappa and her memories of him and what it was like to be a part of his world, “I was truly blessed to have worked with Frank. I met him in 1976, which now feels like a million years ago. It kind of blows my mind that the things I talk about now like my career, my music and my past work are from 30 years ago, but it feels like it was just yesterday”. Dale Added “I am originally from Boston, in my youth I took elocution lessons to improve my speech, when I met Frank he said to me that I had a sound that would be remembered and to never change it”. In live performances, Dale would stride onto the stage and the roar of her fans would drown out the most powerful of sound systems, proof that Zappa was right.

With additional credits to her versatility such as videos, movies and her various ventures in music, including working with Frank Sinatra, Dale would be poised to accomplish anything she desired. Yet, as fate would have it, life would take dale from the stage and into the role of wife, mother and her legacy would be that of an enigma, leaving our sight as quickly as she arrived.

Or so it would seem…

gallery32Dale Bozzio, one of the most recognizable singers to come out of the ‘80s art rock movement, never stopped performing and has kept active in the music world, no longer gracing the large arenas but keeping her performances small and personal, keeping her music intimate with a loving and very loyal fan base. A true original whose signature vocal style was matched only by her iconic outfits that set the standard for flamboyant fashion in rock music is still, many years later, a beautiful and iconic artist that has decided to come back in full force to those that would be waiting. With a life’s story of ups and downs and personal achievements and tragedies, Dale Bozzio is back and she is a stronger and more powerful artist than she ever was.

The album, “Missing In Action”, released today on March 4th on both CD & Vinyl by Cleopatra Records, Is a masterpiece of originality, not a backtrack to the 80’s or a “comeback” attempt, but the creation of an audio tapestry that is, in essence, a tribute to who she was, is and will continue to be. “Missing In Action” was produced by the multi-talented Billy Sherwood, a member of the legendary progressive rock institution Yes, who worked closely with Dale to craft an album that can stand alongside the Missing Persons catalog while still showcasing Dale’s growth as both a performer and a person. Dale told me “it was amazing to work with Billy Sherwood, he could read me and we had a great creative chemistry”. In our interview, Dale reflected on the 10 song album, noting song titles rich with personal meaning such as “Do Or Die”, “Walk Into The Sun,” and “Speed Of Light”, ”The More We Love” and others are not just beautiful songs, they are also testimonials to her life. “I take things to the heart; I want to make things better for the world, I am not greedy or selfish, I just want to give”, I would say it is with this philosophy that Dale is able to create such great music.

gallery33“The More We Love,” which Dale recorded just days after her mother passed away and contains the most moving performance of Dale’s long, historic career as well as her admiration for a person that inspired her to be the best she could be. Dale dedicated much of her work to her family; in commentary she told me that her children were the light of her life and that they are a driving force for her and her greatest supporters “her best friends”. “Everything that I believe in and cherish is in them”, after a laugh, Dale became a bit serious and said “We sometimes take so much of our life for granted, we need to take every day as it comes and enjoy living for its own reward.. We have to face life with courage”.

“Missing In Action”, has been in the making for over two decades and is a triumph to Dale’s ability to empower herself and her fans through her music. To quote Dale Bozzio “Life is precious journey that we have to experience, every day that comes could be either the last day of our life, or the first day or our rebirth or new life and I never do anything that I could not go to sleep with on my conscious”.

Keyes to the City

389686_10150823391566272_115683717_nThe Kris Keyes Interview with Lisa Sunshine of Hollywood-Rock Underground TV and Los Angeles Music Scene Correspondent for Xombiewoof Magazine.

Dive Bomber has become a force to be reckoned with on The Sunset Strip, playing such venues as The Roxy, The Viper Room, The Whiskey A-Go-Go and House of Blues Hollywood. Dive Bomber lights up the stage in an unparalleled groove of power, energy, and love that leaves their audience in awe, most of the time stunned; not even sure of what just happened. Catfish Comstock's intricate guitar solos combined with his own brand of stage presence is exciting and fun in his own right, Rob Pane brings the bass and the sexual energy that keeps the young girls on their toes, and Toad Malone on drums is one of the most seasoned and professional players you will find.

But who is this painted man? Who is Nomad? Who IS Kris Keyes? What's his message? What is he all about?

I have had the pleasure of working with Kris for many years, it can take up to twelve hours to paint him, and I know this because I've helped him do it close to probably a hundred times. He was born in NY and raised in Meriden and New Haven, CT. always performing from a very young age Kris has gone down in the history books at Toads Place in New Haven and is best known for fronting the breakthrough bands Blind Justice and Gargantua Soul before coming to CA to work with Dive Bomber. I will let him tell you the rest of his beautiful and colorful story...

Lisa: Let’s start with the most obvious question, when did you start painting yourself, why do you do it?

269769_206527439399049_6539852_nKris Keyes: “I remember Halloween when I was really young, maybe 5 years old, I painted myself with green food coloring as The Hulk that's one of the first times I did it, but it's become more of a tribal thing throughout the years. The first time I painted myself involving music was with a band called "Sold on Murder", and it was a different type of painting; I wore a big wedding dress and I tied cans to the back of my father’s car and I filled these big zip lock bags with red and green food coloring and I put them throughout the wedding dress and then I had my father drive me around this club called "The Brick and Wood" like a hundred times so basically everyone around the club saw this crazy painted dude and when I got on stage I blew up the bags it turned me red and green.”

“The reason I do it, I am basically a shaman conducting a ceremony it's become a very tribal thing for me... Music is my religion and painting the body is like painting a temple, I've come with a declaration to bring people together, to make an announcement and on the flip side it's a fun and artistic thing that I would like to see when I go out and see a show. A lot of times it has come to a vision quest I see a man standing on a mountain, his back is to me as he slowly turns around I see the painted guy I will be at the next show and it happens somewhere between being asleep and being awake.”

Lisa: How do your beliefs transcend through your music? What is your ultimate message?

542924_10150865154321272_1914511014_nKris Keyes: “Dive Bomber is in the process of writing a new CD called "America the Beautiful", I wrote a new song "The New Vitamin" and the chorus is my message to the world... "No limitation, everyone is levitating, total liberation". So basically people come into the world and we are brought up and taught about limitations in life we are taught about boxes, boxes are limiting. When I paint myself I use a lot of circles if you look at a circle a circle is endless a circle goes from the center of the circle to the end of the universe where a box has four sides and it's like a jail cell.”

“My message is don't believe in limitations, feel in your life as if you are levitating don't feel so heavy on the earth you are only here for a short time and the main message is total liberation when I come as the shaman to the party I've come to set everyone free from their pain from the things that limit them in life I want people to come to my show and basically take off their bodies and be themselves and be their spirit.”

Lisa: What is your favorite song you ever wrote?

148727_10150822620981272_2056876413_nKris Keyes: “I would have to say we are making a version of it for the new Dive Bomber CD, it's a song I've attempted with a few different projects I've been in it's called "The Sound Solution". the chorus goes "We are the leaders of the sound solution the sound ignites causing audio revolution we give thumbs down to all mind pollution, hail hail to the sons of the sound solution" that's definitely off the top of my head one of my favorites.”

Lisa: How old were you the first time you ever performed? Where you were, what were you doing?

Kris Keyes: “My mother was an obese woman, she was 525lbs… when she was younger she wanted to be a country singer, her mother said "No"... So my mother became very depressed and basically when I came into the world, I met my mother Elaine Keyes, in a very depressed and overweight state. The only time she would come to life was on holidays and performances, she put me into tap dancing but the major holiday was Halloween she would make me these huge, crazy costumes, but my performances were singing and tap dancing, I must have been 5 years old... "I'm little but I'm loud, I'm poor but I'm proud, I'm countrified and I don't care who knows it, I'm like a banny rooster in a big bad rooster crowd, I'm puny short, I'm little, but I'm loud". And that was a performance where I didn't have tap shoes yet, I had soft shoe I did a little tap dance number and that's when my mother would get out of bed, that's when my mother would come alive because she was putting through me what she was not allowed to do.”

Lisa: You relocated out here to the west coast to be in this band Dive Bomber, how did that come about?

1069161_10151525389491272_812002803_nKris Keyes: “I put an ad on Craigslist that read "I Sing". Catfish contacted me and we started talking and at one point I didn't know if I was going to do this, I worked for Gabriel Gonzaga, I was running his MMA School, and it was a really good time in my life. I had made a solo CD after my band Gargantua Soul, I still had a deal, I was put into the studio and they put a bunch of money behind it and I did these huge shows... I went to India performed for 3 million people and it was a performance called "The Silver Jubilee", but my CD tanked. Whereas Gargantua Soul sold 50,000 CD's my solo CD sold nothing. So I was very depressed and I came back from India and I joined this MMA School called Team Link and it was really a second coming of my life. I got into this regimen if these really cool people and I sort of became part of the family but then I realized that I really came back to the country from India to do music so I put the ad on Craigslist. When we started on how we were going to bring me to the west coast it was a negotiation, and I remember specifically me and Catfish going, “now what?”

“From the conversations we knew we were soul brothers we knew it was going to happen but we just didn't know when. Then finally we worked out the agreement, I didn't relocate right away, I came out I recorded the CD, we did a couple shows, when we all got together and really performed we all realized it was a great thing so I went and packed up all my things and came back out. The painted man is definitely a reflection of what is going on inside of me. In the time I have been in Dive Bomber, "America the Beautiful" is definitely inspired by what has happened because the painted guy is a whole brand new painted guy the painted guy from Gargantua Soul or even going back to Blind Justice was different, I'm in a way different place in my life. There are all these different things that make up "Nomad" and it's a combination of sadness, it's a combination of aggression, it's a combination of really wanting to be liberated from my problems and my shortcomings in my own life so it's brand new; and I'm always excited when there is a blank piece of paper and you start to create but "America the Beautiful" is definitely an expression of where I'm at with Dive Bomber and Nomad.”

Lisa: Does Dive Bomber have any plans on touring?

919513_547885911920434_1969505979_oKris Keyes: “Christian Lawrence (Opus)- (Dead by Wednesday/Bullet Boys/Alcoholica) is my soul brother, he said the word Gargantua, and I said the word Soul, we put those words together and he is definitely family to me and he digs what I do with the painted guy so he invited me and Dive Bomber to come out and be the host of his birthday bash at Toads Place in New Haven, CT, it's going to be the first time the east coast experiences Dive Bomber and we are really excited to be a part of it.”

Lisa: I've heard that you are going back to the east coast before then to finish a movie with Corbin Bernsen called Sensory Perception. Can you tell us a little more about that?

Kris Keyes: “I am actually involved in different stages of three different movies. Sensory Perception, a feature film written, directed, and produced by Alessandro Signore and produced by David Gere, also stars Corbin Bernsen (LA Law, Major League), John Savage (Godfather III, Deer Hunter), John Wesley Shipp (The Flash, Dawson's Creek), Diamond Dallas Page (The Devil's Rejects, WWE), Mike Duff, Stephanie Victoria Gabriel Gonzaga (UFC Heavyweight), Tommy Dreamer (Self Storage, ECW), and some of the best talent on the east coast. That film has been a long and glorious journey and will be finished by the end of the year with distribution in early 2014.”

“Then I was contacted by someone that wants to do a documentary on The Painted Man, and then there is also a part for me in their new movie.”

1235486_10153101308245012_1814809803_n“The next feature film I'm involved with will be shot partially in Las Vegas by Pale Nail Productions, which is Alessandro Signore's flagship company. I'm Al's “DeNiro” and he's my “Scorsese”, and we're really excited about this next one - it's called Flicker, and it's the same thing that happened with Sensory Perception. In the beginning, we were filming it in an abandon warehouse, I was wearing bare feet, 12 hour days, freezing cold weather - I really put my time in with Al and Sensory Perception has stayed a true indie film artistically, but now we're rubbing elbows and shooting with Hollywood actors who WANT to be involved in what we're doing. Same thing with Flicker, it was originally a short film, a passion project of ours called "The Slighted". We are actually going to make a proposal to Corey Feldman to be involved, we are going to make a proposal to one of the stars of The Boondock Saints, among others, and basically try to make Flicker the same thing as Sensory Perception - a true indie with an uncompromised vision, but also a film that has some marquee value and can break into major markets.”

“The other movie that was offered to me by the company that wants to do the documentary on me is some type of story about Charles Manson and it's in the desert and I believe it's going to be shot in Arizona and that was actually just proposed to me and I was like, "Hell ya man!..". There is also a possibility I will be one of the hosts of Pauliewood he is starting an Internet TV show and he just got his backing for that, for me I'm an actor, I've been an actor/singer ever since I was little and I went to a school called The Educational Center for the Arts, in New Haven, CT. So being a host for shows and doing different things in the entertainment business is all really cool to me, but singing, being the shaman but also acting is really a love of mine, I've done script vie done theatre so I look forward to doing these other things. I will also be doing a music video with Sensory Perception producer David Gere for a solo song, So Close, when I go back east.”

Throughout all the interviews i have done in my lifetime, interviewing someone so close to me has been the most fulfilling. Kris Keyes is so much more than the music he creates and produces. His ability to grasp his inner self exposes his free spirit and reminds me of John Lennon's hope and timeless music. Creative, imaginative, dedicated, centered, original, talented, soulful, colorful, bold, masterful and ENIGMATIC; these are the words that best describe the wonder that is Kris Keyes/Nomad.

See Kris Keyes a.k.a Nomad live with Dive Bomber and follow his works at www.DiveBomber.org, www.SensoryPerceptionMovie.com and hear him on www.Reverbnation.com/DiveBomber .

See the trailer for Sound System here: http://youtu.be/bgL_CBC83qk .

Conceived and compiled by The Clash, Sound System is a significant and unique collection of the complete recorded works by the 20th century’s most influential British band. Greatly enhanced by the careful remastering which renders the original recordings more vital and crisp, all contained in Paul Simonon’s iconic design, with a selection of bonus material, Sound System is the most important and unique box set to ever be released by the band.

Prompted by demand for a complete collection, Sound System is a powerful reminder of The Clash’s enduring legacy. It’s hard to think of a band before or since that have exerted such universal influence. The 1970s punk movement gave birth to some important bands, but none were more important than The Clash. Here were a band who pushed and broke musical boundaries, while fusing musical experimentation with a socio-political conscience. From their eponymously-titled debut album in 1977, the band incorporated elements of reggae, rap, jazz, dance, rockabilly and ska in their music. Their passionate, political agenda continues to inspire new fans and musicians alike. Indeed, the issues The Clash tackled are as relevant today as they were in the late '70s/early '80s. Dubbed “the only band that matters” in their heyday, the same could be said almost 40 years later.

Sound System box set contents:

1. The Clash

2. Give 'Em Enough Rope (1 CD)

3. London Calling (double album, 2 CDs)

4. Sandinista! (triple album, 3 CDs)

The Clash – The Clash - Hits Back

Released simultaneously, The Clash - Hits Back features 32 of the band’s iconic tracks across a 2-CD set. The tracklist is sequenced from the band’s legendary Brixton Fairdeal show in 1982.

The Clash – Hits Back contains the best studio recordings of the full set, plus 8 additional iconic tracks. It comes with the original setlist, handwritten by Joe Strummer which he usually taped to the back of his Telecaster before each gig.

“Every show was different. Joe would spend a lot of time composing the running order, considering dynamics, emotional impact and the key the songs were in. This record is based on Joe’s setlist from The Casbah Club UK Tour, Brixton Fairdeal, 10th July 1982”. Mick, Paul & Topper.
