The Sound of the Life of the Mind–Ben Folds Five

A New Album that Reveals the Introspective Extravert

Street Date – September 18th, 2012 : Available for pre order at http://www.benfolds.com and Amazon.Com

Review by Joseph Timmons – Xombiewoof.com Magazine

Five Stars : vvvvv

Ben Folds Five has enjoyed notoriety with many successful albums and have been welcomed into the hearts of their fans for a wide number of reasons, one of which is they have actual talent and vision in their music's composition and lyrical content.  Ben Folds Five is not to be taken for granted as “sing – song” or “folksy”, they have a message that is felt within. Ben Folds Five, described by some as an alternative rock trio, formed in 1993 ,the group is Ben Folds, Robert Sledge, and Darren Jessee. The group achieved mainstream success in the alternative, indie and pop music scenes. This trio of contemplative genius have come together to put forth and deliver their first album in several years, proving that perfection comes with time and tenacity. Some would think that so many years apart and out of the studio would cause an inability to work together and create the harmonies and pure sound that has been the trademark of Ben Fold Five’s success, yet all that time off hasn't detracted from quirky, and sometimes geeky appeal of the band's piano-driven music.

Ben Folds Five came together to record three new studio tracks for The Best Imitation Of Myself: A Retrospective, a career-spanning Ben Folds anthology on Columbia/Legacy Records. With the band’s magic rekindled while making the new tracks, Ben Folds Five gave its first concert in more than a decade to a spellbound audience at New York’s Mountain Jam Festival on June 2, 2012. Now, Ben Folds Five returns with The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind, the group’s first album of new music in 13 years. First single from the album, which will be the first video from Ben Folds Five in just as many years is “Do It Anyway”,  the band kicked off a U.S. tour September 13th 2012 and will be appearing nation wide to support this album.

ben folds

Ben Fold Five’s new album, The Sound of the Life of the Mind, is an album that has been a long time coming, a continuation of their ability to captivate the listener into a world full of brightness and emotion.

The compositions, acoustic and ambient in it’s base, resonate and linger in the thoughts. Bouncy and playful, the music keeps in perfect time with lyrics that reach out and find a place in ones life. I listened to each track and found that they had a kindred connection to things I have and still experience in my life, and even with some moments when language can be surprising and unlike an expected thought of what is to come next, each lyric is meant to be there, perfectly placed and enrobed in a sweet melody that makes it a memory all it’s own.

I know, I gush, but my experiences with music have shown me that one can never take an artist for granted, their past measures an either drive them forward or hold them back, but with Ben Folds Five, The Sound of the Life of the Mind propels them into a place where only few can be at any given moment, and that place is in the perfect moment of time.

My only complaint is that the album is too short, even with 9 solid tracks that fill this album with ambient pleasure, it may leave one wishing for a 10th track , so in lieu of this elusive 10th track, I found their Live Stream Video where they discuss what is up with Ben Folds Five, their new album and more, enjoy it, and then go Buy The Album - The Sound of the Life of the Mind , which is available in CD, Vinyl and Digital Download, as well as other Albums by Ben Folds Five.

Jimi Hendrix: Jimi Plays Berkley

Jimi-Hendrix-Plays-BerkeleyRare Video and Audio from Berkley Community Theatre Performance May 30th, 1970

DVD / Blu-Ray Video Released by Experience Hendrix / Legacy

Street Release Date: July 10th, 2012

Review by Joseph Timmons – Xombiewoof.Com Magazine

Writer’s Note: this review will cover the DVD / Blu-Ray documentary and performance video Jimi Plays Berkley and the upcoming audio presentation of The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live at Berkley. This article will touch on another upcoming release West Coast Seattle Boy – Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child which will be a 2 hour documentary covering the history and life of one of America’s greatest Rock and Roll legends and founding father.

hendrixjimi_playsberkeleyOf all the movies, documentaries and video examinations music’s evolution in the 60’s and 70’s, we learned or are reminded of the social and political events shaping the environments that invoked the creative genius of the artists in that period of time. One such artist that is persistently mentioned is Jimi Hendrix, an artist that had a short but brilliant time on this earth and shined like a thousand suns, drawing to him those that understood his vision of music and heard the message in his words. The musical styling of Jimi Hendrix were completely original from his method of writing and performing to the way he played his guitar. Jimi played with an enthusiasm that was of the moment, a way that froze in the air and captured no only his music but the events of the time.

The social / political turmoil’s that were the foundation of civil rights movement, the anti-war movement, the times of protest and social change, all were heard in his soundscapes. Born in November of 1942, who would believe that one bright eyed child would be the bard of an era. Remembered for the unique performance of this nation’s anthem, The Star Spangled Banner, which encompasses the sounds of conflict and the sentiment of a nation’s internal struggles, we often decline to acknowledge his other grand accomplishments.

Jimi Plays Berkley is made from digitally restored 16mm film footage and has additional, previously unseen footage. Billed as a Documentary, this performance video is in 5.1 surround sound, mixed by Jimi’s engineer Edie Kramer and includes commentary from Abe Jacob, the original audio engineer who recorded the concerts in 1970. This movie contains not only Jimi Hendrix’s thrilling on stage performance, but is intertwined with footage of what was going on in the streets outside the concert hall at the same time, protest lines, citizen and police conflicts, people trying to force their way into the concert hall to see the master play and those that would use this event to make their statement, on both sides of the street. The hippies and “the man” taking their conflict and struggles to the city streets, while in the hall, a perfect silence of the masses, the only sounds were that of Hendrix and his band making music that would be forever remembered and become inspirational for all that attended. Jimi had made a statement “forget about yesterday or tomorrow, this is our own little world tonight”, this one small quote would be his legacy statement, to live for the now and to live….. Period, live and let live, be free within the world and yourself, to live and love.

Jimi Plays Berkeley the Second Set

The video presentation is of the 1st set from the Berkley performances, the 2nd set from the presentation is the audio recordings, both on CD and Vinyl, entitled Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live from Berkley, is an audiophile’s dream, a compilation of songs that examine every nuance of a spectacular performance, for those that were there, this will be a memory worth reliving and to new Hendrix fans, a new and exciting look into the magic that was Jimi Hendrix.

The 3rd and possibly most informative portion of this Hendrix collection is West Coast Seattle Boy – Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child, directed by Bob Smeaton, which features a rich soundtrack of Jimi Hendrix’s classics, interviews and monologs. A life in Jimi’s own voice, originally included in a boxed set of Jimi’s recordings, is an autobiographical journey into the artist’s life. Portions of this movie include linear notes, letters and diary entries read by Parliament- Funkadelic’s Bootsy Collins, who by nature has a vocal texture that is similar to Jimi Hendrix’s voice which lends and eerie value to the monologues, like Jimi reaching out to us from the afterlife.

With so many lost tapes, recordings and sessions seeing the light of day, we are learning more and more about the artists that shaped our lives through music, and we are re-examining our own sense of what their music meant and still means to us. Jimi Hendrix was and still is one of the most innovative artists of his or any era, and even though his time on this world was far too short, his legacy of music and social / political influence lives on, to be enjoyed by all that desire to live the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

The songs performed on this amazing new video Jimi Plays Berkley are: mank_jimi_0

· Johnny B. Goode

· Hear My Train A Comin’

· Star Spangled Banner

· Purple Haze

· Hey baby (New Rising Sun)

· Lover Man

· I Don’t Live Today

· Machine Gun

· Voodoo Child (Slight Return) JIMI_B10-web-size2

The Audio CD and LP offering -Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live in Berkeley includes these tracks and the following additional tracks:

· Pass It On (Straight Ahead)

· Hey Joe

· Foxey Lady

This is not just a movie, or a collection of songs, or a documentary, it is a tribute to the life of a man who was, and still is an example of what the Peace and Love generation was all about. Rest in Peace Mr. Hendrix, your Music still means something, as so does your life and all the lives shaped by your time on this world.

A Tribute to a Career of Evil

boc

New Album Review:

The Essential Blue Oyster Cult

2 CD Set on Epic / Legacy Label – Street Date – April 17, 2012

In 1967, a group of musicians from my home town of Long Island, NY, formed under the name of Soft White Underbelly, playing a mix of psychedelic stylized rock and heavy chord progressions, creating a unique and wholly new musical experience. The group found themselves with a loyal following that grew exponentially with every gig they played, soon after they would change their name to Blue Oyster Cult, and with that change, they would step out of the darkness into the white hot fire of music legendry. In 1972 they would be signed to Columbia records and begin shaping their entirely new sound into a collection of albums that are in, or should be in, every album collection across the world.

The music of Blue Oyster Cult is electrically infused rhythms and storytelling lyrics that create pictures of the dark side in the human mind, facing demons, escaping soulless entities and ghosts of the past. Once given the title “Doom Rock” Blue Oyster Cult has been noted to be akin to artists such as Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Arthur Brown and those who would touch upon the taboos of society and paint pictures of an alternate reality that makes the blood of the squeamish run cold, yet for those of us who relish the heavy beats and the “mind blowing” riffs, it is the religious experience of the sound that would influence the now heavy metal sound that permeates the radio airwaves. Blue Oyster cult can be directly credited with being the cornerstone of the modern rock movement. In my youth, I would go to a nightclub in Bayshore, Long Island called Sundance, this was the Rock & Roll Club that every band throughout the Rock & Roll world wanted to, and would play, on every Halloween I would see Blue Oyster Cult play and the crowd was always energized by the sounds of Eric Bloom’s voice and the hypnotic rhythms and guitar serenades of Buck Dharma.

With a discography over 21 albums, not including imports, live albums, movie soundtracks and previous collections, Blue Oyster Cult has had, and still retains one of the most impressive careers in music, and now they have amassed a collection of their most historically innovative songs from their groundbreaking albums of all time.

The Essential Blue Oyster Cult 2 CD set to be released on April 17 of 2012 will be the total tribute to a band that is the embodiment of Rock & Roll in a lifelong tour that started in the late 60’s and still performs on every stage today. With songs like “Stairway to the Stars”, “O.D.’d on Life Itself”, “Flaming Telepaths”,” Harvester of Eyes” (Live), “Don’t fear the Reaper”, “Godzilla” and more, this collection of hits and dark tales of a secret underworld will excite Blue Oyster Cult fans both old and new. I personally found the addition of Blue Oyster Cult’s live renditions of “Born to be Wild” and “Roadhouse Blues” to be spectacular.

The tracks on this collection are however from the earlier albums that are hard to find or no longer available, which is great, but I would have liked to see more tracks from their more recent albums, such as Heaven Forbid, Curse of the Hidden Mirror and A Long Days Night which would have shown how the band can, after so many years, keep their song concepts, writing and musical genius fresh and innovative. If you get a chance, look up “Like to See You in Black” from Heaven Forbid and “The Old Gods Return” from Curse of the Hidden Mirror. I am also a bit surprised about some songs that did not appear on this collection, “Vengeance (the Pact)” which was from the album Fire of Unknown Origin or “Unknown Tongue” from album Cultosaurus Erectus- not complaining, just a bit surprised that they were not included.

The Essential Blue Oyster Cult 2 CD set is not just a re-imaging of prior recordings, of poorly recorded live tracks, but has crystal clear sound and does not sound over sampled or “over-produced”, the live tracks a fantastic and you can hear, and often feel, the excitement of those in the audience, so if you never have been to a Blue Oyster Cult show, you can just close your eyes and instantly be transported to the arena and bask in the power and the glory of the BOC. I strongly suggest this as an album for the new Fan of Blue Oyster Cult; it is an audio-logically perfect History of Rock lesson for the newly ordained BOC neophyte, and then begin to build on this collection with the complete albums both old and new, you can never have too much Blue Oyster Cult. I will also leave you with this one last piece of advice, after listening to The Essential Blue Oyster Cult at the highest possible volume you can endure, dig out the nightlight, keep a flashlight under your pillow and find pleasant things to dream about, the shadows may be watching.

JANIS JOPLIN - THE PEARL SESSIONS

COLUMBIA/LEGACY RECORDINGS CELEBRATES JANIS JOPLIN WITH THE RELEASE OF ESSENTIAL NEW ADDITIONS TO HER CATALOG: JANIS JOPLIN - THE PEARL SESSIONS (NEW TWO-DISC EDITION PREMIERING NINE PREVIOUSLY UNAVAILABLE TRACKS & NEWLY DISCOVERED STUDIO RECORDINGS) & THE FIRST OF BEAR'S "SONIC JOURNALS": BIG BROTHER AND THE HOLDING COMPANY FEATURING JANIS JOPLIN  - LIVE AT THE CAROUSEL BALLROOM 1968 RECORDED & PRODUCED BY OWSLEY STANLEY ("BEAR" )

imageHighlights From The Pearl Sessions, Limited Edition Double 10" Vinyl Release, Struck For Record Store Day 2012

New York, NY – Columbia/Legacy Recordings celebrates Janis Joplin with the release of two essential new titles in the catalog of the American blues-rock-country-soul singer: Janis Joplin - The Pearl Sessions, a two-disc set premiering newly discovered studio recordings produced by Paul Rothchild (available Tuesday, April 17) and Big Brother and the Holding Company Featuring Janis Joplin - Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968, an electrifying full-length concert recorded and produced for release by the legendary soundman Owsley ("Bear") Stanley (available Tuesday, March 13). The Pearl Sessions is an historic expansion of Joplin's final studio album, providing fascinating new insight into Janis' creative process through a range of rare and previously unreleased material.

Newly available bonus material on The Pearl Sessions includes the original master mono mixes of the album's singles ("Cry Baby," "Me and Bobby McGee," "Half Moon," "Get It While You Can," "Move Over," "A Woman Left Lonely") and a full-length second disc showcasing Joplin live in the studio performing never-before-heard takes of Pearl classics. From behind-the-scenes banter to full finished takes, The Pearl Sessions shows the complexity of Joplin's genius, the tough and vulnerable aspects of her personality, her lightning sense of humor, and her razor-sharp attention to the details of her craft. Offering fresh perspectives on the more familiar "official" versions of the songs, alternate takes of "Get It While You Can," the Janis Joplin-composed "Move Over," and others open up unexpected new dimensions in the material and in the sublime nuances of Joplin's delivery.

The Pearl Sessions offers an unprecedented opportunity to be in the room with Janis, her producer, Paul Rothchild, and the members of the Full Tilt Boogie Band (guitarist John Till, pianist Richard Bell, bassist Brad Campbell, drummer Clark Pierson, organist Ken Pearson) as they create one of the enduring masterpieces of rock 'n' roll.

Originally released on January 11, 1971 (three months after her passing on October 4, 1970), Pearl debuted Joplin's final finished studio recordings. The only album Joplin ever recorded with the Full Tilt Boogie Band, the touring ensemble that had backed her on the Festival Express (a mythic 1970 concert tour by railroad across Canada with the Grateful Dead, the Band and others), Pearl included canonical studio recordings of songs that had been introduced to audiences on tour. A live version of "Tell Me Mama" (a song not included on the original Pearl), recorded during the legendary Toronto Festival Express date, is included as a bonus track on The Pearl Sessions. Also included as a bonus is Janis' scorching live version of "Half Moon," recorded for her appearance on "The Dick Cavett Show" on August 3, 1970.

Peaking at #1 on the Billboard 200, a position it held for nine weeks, Pearl included some of Janis's most familiar and best-loved performances including her cover of Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee" and her off-the-cuff a cappella "Mercedes Benz." A never released alternate take and the original "Me and Bobby McGee" demo are both included on The Pearl Sessions.

When putting together material for a 40th anniversary edition of Pearl, researchers discovered a treasure-trove of previously uncatalogued audio tapes from the album's sessions, produced by Paul Rothchild. An industry legend, perhaps best-known for producing the first five Doors albums, Rothchild further solidified his position in music history with his work on Pearl.

The Pearl Sessions brings together the original mono versions of the album’s 45s and the original LP tracks alongside a revelatory cavalcade of newly-discovered alternate versions, outtakes and vocal takes that put you in the studio with Janis Joplin.

A limited edition double 10" high fidelity vinyl gatefold release, Highlights from The Pearl Sessions will be available exclusively for Record Store Day (April 21, 2012). A companion to the newly curated two CD edition of Joplin's farewell masterpiece, Pearl, this vinyl release presents previously unreleased and seldom heard takes and early versions of classic songs, culled from the recently discovered tapes used to create The Pearl Sessions.

A limited edition 12" vinyl edition of Pearl will also be available on Tuesday, April 17. A breakout from the Classic LP Collection box, the album is pressed at RTI on 180-gram audiophile vinyl.

The release of The Pearl Sessions marks a renewed focus on Janis Joplin and the continuing influence of her music. Columbia/Legacy Recording will release Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968, a previously unavailable live concert recording of Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin, recorded June 23, 1968 by legendary soundman Owsley Stanley, a/k/a "Bear," who supervised the mastering of this release before his fatal car accident in his adopted homeland of Australia on March 12, 2011. Dedicated to Bear, the album will be released on March 13, 2012, marking the one-year anniversary of his passing.

A special collector's edition of Live at the Carousel Ballroom will be available in a special two 12" vinyl LP gatefold collector's edition on Tuesday, March 27. "This evening was special," remembers Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart was in the Carousel Ballroom that night in June '68. "The Bear loved Janis. Her ability to sing multiple tones simultaneously and then morph them into heart wrenching chords was singular. Her primal cry, filled with tenderness and hurt, was delivered at 140 decibels as the band pushed here into the slipstream. There could be no one more qualified to bring Big Brother and the Holding Company to life than Owsley. Together they captured the magic. The Bear sure had it right this night."

As potentially being the complete and definitive collection of  Janis Joplin’s work and her short but exciting career in music, these offerings would be the key part of any rock and roll fan, historian or audiophile.

MEET RECORD STORE DAY 2012'S AMBASSADOR: IGGY POP

ANNUAL EVENT FOR INDEPENDENT RECORD STORES WORLDWIDE IS SATURDAY, APRIL 21st

VINYLMANIA: When Life Runs At 33 Revolutions Per Minute, a film by Paolo Campana, chosen as the Official Film of Record Store Day 2012

Record Store Day, the annual event in support of independent record stores the world over, is proud to announce the appointment of Iggy Pop to the post of Record Store Day 2012 Ambassador!

Of course, there is a lot to say about the upcoming event, set this year for Saturday, April 21st, but who better to extoll the virtues of our "holiday" than our Ambassador.

So, ladies and gentlemen, we give you Iggy Pop

A person should have a personality. You won't get one dicking around on a computer. It helps to go somewhere where there are other persons. Persons who are interested in something you are. That's how a record store or any shop that's got some life to it should work.

imageIt's not about selling shit. I got my name, my musical education and my personality all from working at a record store during my tender years. Small indie shops have always been a mix of theater and laboratory. In the 50's and 60's the teen kids used to gather after school at these places to listen free to the latest singles and see if they liked the beat. You could buy the disc you liked for 79 cents and if you were lucky meet a chick. Clerks in these places became managers, (like Brian Epstein), label heads, (Jack Holzman) and Faces on album covers (like me). Personally I feel best in a store that, while staying small and socially relaxed, still keeps a complete variety of music types and non musical recordings on offer. I'm aware though that a lot of great places are genre-specific, like dance hall shops in Jamaica or Compas here in Little Haiti. In Europe and on the West coast the same goes on for Punk and Goth. All of this is cool and has a much bigger future than most people realize today. When the record and record store businesses began to die at the turn of the new century, they deserved it because they got too big too boring and too plastic.

As Record Store Day Ambassador for 2012 I feel like a representative from some exotic jungle full of life and death and sex and anger, called upon to wear a leopard skin and translate joy to the world of the dead.

Record Store Day is also proud to announce their selection of VINYLMANIA: When Life Runs At 33 Revolutions Per Minute, a film by Paolo Campana (75", 2011) as the Official Film of Record Store Day 2012. Produced by Stefilm in coproduction with Lato Sensu and ZDF in collaboration with ARTE, Vinylmania is a tour through the grooves of an object that has never lost its soul, investigating what makes it so legendary in a world dominated by liquid music: Nostalgia? Possession?

The search for an identity - Vinylmania: When Life Runs at 33 Revolutions Per Minute is currently scheduled to play at the FIPATEL and Berlinale markets, and details on Festival and other screenings are being confirmed.

The FIFTH day-long celebration of the culture of the record store happens on Record Store Day, April 21, 2012. More details, on events, performances, screenings and releases are forthcoming. The Record Store Day website is www.recordstoreday.com .

Record Store Day is managed by the Music Monitor Network and is organized in partnership with the Alliance of Independent Media Stores (AIMS), the Coalition of Independent Music Stores (CIMS) and celebrates the culture of independent record stores by playing host to in-store events/performances, signings and special product releases on a global scale.

Record Store Day takes place annually on the third Saturday of April.

Record Store Day Sponsors:

Crosley Radio, EMI Distribution, Fontana Distribution, Furnace MFG, NARM, RED Distribution, Sony Music, Universal Music Distribution, Vivendi Entertainment, WEA Distribution, and Warner Bros. Records.

COLUMBIA/LEGACY RECORDINGS RELEASING THE FIRST OF "BEAR'S SONIC JOURNALS"

COLUMBIA/LEGACY RECORDINGS RELEASING THE FIRST OF "BEAR'S SONIC JOURNALS": BIG BROTHER & THE HOLDING COMPANY FEATURING JANIS JOPLIN LIVE AT THE CAROUSEL BALLROOM 1968,  RECORDED & PRODUCED BY OWSLEY STANLEY ("BEAR")

Long Awaited Release of Seminal Concert Recording from Mythic Soundman's "Sonic Journals" Available Tuesday, March 13, 2012

Columbia/Legacy Recordings is proud to announce the release of Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968, a previously unavailable live concert recording of Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin, recorded June 23, 1968 by legendary soundman Owsley Stanley, a/k/a "Bear," who supervised the mastering of this release before his fatal car accident on March 12, 2011, in his adopted homeland of Australia. The release of the album marks the one-year anniversary of his passing and is dedicated to Bear.

"Care was taken to preserve and ensure the integrity of the music as well as to present an accurate snapshot of the masterful talent of one of the greatest singers of her generation and one of the hottest live bands in the San Francisco scene," wrote Bear's widow, Sheilah Stanley, in her dedication to Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968. "This is Bear’s vision – how he heard the band live, and how he wanted to transmit that to you... this truly is Bear’s presentation of this phenomenal band and inspirational music."

Cited by San Francisco rock scribe Joel Selvin as "truly one of the fathers of today's concert sound systems," Owsley Bear Stanley "supervised the sound at the Carousel Ballroom, a former big band dance palace at the corner of Market and Van Ness in downtown San Francisco that, for a few brief, glorious months in 1968 was operated by a collective formed by the Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Big Brother and the Holding Company, a social/musical laboratory experiment akin to inmates running asylums, whose six-month run may well have corresponded with the height of the whole '60s Haight-Ashbury/San Francisco thing...."

An essential and pivotal figure in the San Francisco counter-cultural scene, from beatniks to hippies to beyond, Bear began mixing live sound with the Grateful Dead in 1966 and ran the sound system for the Carousel until Bill Graham took over and rechristened it the Fillmore West in the autumn of 1968. From his first days with the Dead, Bear would record the shows he was involved with as way to improve his live system set-ups. Bear's "sonic journals" are generally regarded as the gold standard for live concerts from the psychedelic era.

"What is key about these moments captured by Owsley is that they’re a true representation of what this mythic band really sounded like live," notes rock scribe Jaan Uhelszki in her essay on Janis and Big Brother's enduring ability to astound and surprise, "the rough magic, the explosive synergy, the dangerous frisson of boundaries being demolished between artist and audience....these 14 songs are a testament to what a force of nature Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company was during these two nights at the Carousel Ballroom. Showing them at the zenith of their considerable power, it is so fortunate that this recording was ever made—only two months before their break up. This is one of the few living documents of that propitious and monumental pairing."

"He viewed these recordings as windows into the past," wrote Bear's son, Starfinder Stanley, in his notes for Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968.
