Indie Pulse: Too Far Gone is a Vinyl Trip worth taking

Opinion Article and Album Reviews by Joseph Timmons: Xombiewoof Magazine

Reviews of Let’s Move by Tough Stuff and Tough Love by Forth Wanderers

So, here we are again, and as always I have an opinion, so sit back, relax and prepare to be mesmerized.

The indie label scene is all a buzz with excitement, not only has the small press labels become popular without the Hipster element, but some great music is coming out on a daily basis. Through hard work, diligence and great sense in music production, the small indie labels are flourishing, not only in the LP and 45 trade, but cassettes and lathes are hot, but not trendy or fake. This excites me, because labels like Too Far Gone Records can create some great, need to have albums for everyone.

Today I give to you two reviews in one, Too Far Gone Records sent me both Let’s Move by Tough Stuff and Tough Love by Forth Wanderers, these 2 bands are on either end of the experimental spectrum and I believe show some great promise to the music community as well as a great feather in the cap moment for the label. So, here are my thoughts, please feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think as well as suggest a band we should check out.

A bit about Too Far Gone Records, taken directly from their website info page:

“Too Far Gone Records is run by one 21 year old college student that really loves music and the DIY community.  The location of the label rotates depending on the school year, mostly being located in Boston, Massachusetts.  Any questions/complaints/bad jokes/inquiries/anything should be directed to toofargonerecords@gmail.com and I will answer as soon as I possibly can!” – through messaging, we found out that the industrious leadership of this label not only ran an up and coming source of fantastic music, but moved his entire operation while still meeting order deadlines… some serious dedication to his craft, an a level of honesty the big time labels could learn from.

Now, on to the music!

v600_toughstuffcoverAlbum Review of Let’s Move by Tough Stuff by Joseph Timmons: Xombiewoof Magazine

Tough Stuff is a punk group from Long Beach, CA is the debut album that I feel captures some of the anger and apathy felt by this generation, wrought with lyrics of a straight forward nature, and mature language, show that today’s working class youth are sick and tired of the bullshit!

Not over polished, but raw and full of energy, Let’s Move by Tough Stuff is really reminiscent to me of the early NY Punk Scene I delved in my youth and has a pinch of the quirky fallout of the early live Ramones and NY Dolls, not to say they are revamping the early works, Tough Stuff is purely original, but the sentiment and desire to be unique in their messaging is obvious in this 12 track first work.

I do think however, the mix could have been a bit better, the vocals on the more aggressive tracks did not come through as well as some of the others, and the vocalist has a real talent and should be heard! This is one for the collection and since it is a limited run, 200 black Vinyl and 300 marbled violet Vinyl, this album won’t last on the rack long, it is available at Too Far Gone Records and the bands Bandcamp page.

v600_a0523103369_16Album Review of Tough Love by Forth Wanderers by Joseph Timmons: Xombiewoof Magazine

Forth Wanderers latest release Tough Love is a split release with Seagreen Records and is an album with a light yet haunting appeal. Sounding very much like early Smashing Pumpkins, and with the vocals by Ava Trilling, the group has a unique an ominous feel.

Forth Wanderers, based out of Montclair, NJ has a growing fan base and captures the ears and minds of more with every performance. Their previous release, Mahogany, has had a very large result on the band’s Bandcamp page and with this latest release, Tough Love by Forth Wanderers looks to follow in suit. This is a release limited to only 350 Opaque yellow and 300 translucent green / opaque blue split Vinyl, so this will be a hot to collect item, I would not be surprised if the popularity made the label print up more to satisfy demand.

The songs on this album are immensely introspective and on occasion make me think of Fiona Apple or Tori Amos, winding and hypnotic, not the “Psychedelic” style sound but a dreamy, persuasive, move to the music sound that only a group with phenomenal range can bring to the stage. I would love to see a live album or DVD with proper production come from Forth Wanderers in the near future.

I give both albums “thumbs up”, Forth Wanderers Tough Love is 5 out of 5 and Let’s Move by Tough Stuff a 4.5, only due to the hopes for a better vocal mix, but still so very well worth the pennies you will pay for a great set of albums.

Matt Pless: A New Forgotten Son

1521894_10152869768851369_8225959305167731738_nAlbum / Music Review and Artist Introduction

Matt Pless

Review of 2 Albums -

Tumbleweed

Songs in the Key of Blue

Reviews by Joseph Timmons: Xombiewoof Magazine

From the start, the music of Matt Pless reminded me of another soft-spoken radical that would, without intention wind up changing the world and the way people think, yet unlike Dylan, Matt Pless would come from a more angst ridden generation, with an ideology that is intertwined with an abundant humor and is uniquely his own. From his bio, Matt is “a musician who can't read music, an artist who can't stand most aspects of the pretentious art community, and a writer who usually has fairly poor grammatical skills” yet his articulation in verse is admirable if not savant.

2723922Combining elements of folk, punk, pop and roots rock, Matt has created in his youth a discography that already rivals most “professionals” with thought-provoking witty lyrics, his music spans topics from love and loss to social commentary, from drug abuse to friendship. Performing in coffee shops, clubs, basements, living rooms and wherever there are people who want to hear his music, Matt Pless and his guitar are at the ready. He books his own tour dates and along the way has managed to share the stage with Maroon 5, Fallout Boy, Ani Difranco, David Amram, Rilo Kiley, Alkaline Trio, NOFX, Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Ghost Mice, Ramshackle Glory, The Queers, Warren Haynes, Ryan Harvey, Bad Brains, and others. A consummate performer with a high energy stage presence, Matt’s universally relatable songs will leave you talking, thinking and dancing in your mind’s dance hall.

When Matt set out for NYC for the first time, he spent his first night playing in the subway for tips. He continued to play for change and added Washington Square Park to his busking list. As a result of his street singing, he was approached for inclusion in “The Noise beneath the Apple”, a book documenting buskers and street performers in New York City. His song, “New York Monday” is featured on the book’s accompanying vinyl compilation. Eventually, his talent led him to play many of the top songwriter venues in the Big Apple, including The Sidewalk Café, Rockwood Music Hall, The Bitter End, Café Vivaldi and The City Winery.

Matt continued to tour relentlessly, supporting Irish folk duo “Heathers”, traveling to Indiana to play at a popular underground punk gathering called “Plan it X Fest”, and spending the bulk of the spring and summer of 2011 broadening his fan base in as many states as he could. Early that fall he ventured to Zuccotti Park in NYC during the Occupy Wall Street protests to play some music there and ended up becoming the impetus behind a benefit compilation cd called Occupy This Album. He contributed his original composition “Something’s Got to Give” to the cd which also included tracks performed by artists like Joan Baez, Crosby and Nash, Debbie Harry, Tom Morello, Thievery Corporation, the Guthrie Family, Yoko Ono, Lucinda Williams, Patti Smith and Willie Nelson, among others. Matt also created the cover art for the album, recognition of his lifelong talent for drawing and the visual arts. In the months that followed, he appeared in national music publications such as Rolling Stone, Grammy.com, Relix magazine, as well as The Huffington Post, interviews in Forbes magazine and an appearance on the Tom Hartman show.

In late February of 2013, Matt released his first 7 inch record on the newly formed Fake Art Records label. This vinyl, soon to be collector’s item (only 300 copies were pressed) included the songs "Dirty Needles' and "Of Love and Loss". Around the same time, a Canadian indie label called “You Look Like Shit” Records released a cassette tape collection of acoustic tracks entitled "Tumbleweed" which we will review, It included alternate versions of some older songs, as well as many new compositions, such as the anthemic crowd favorite "Ashtray" and a melodically dreamy tune called "the Book of You and I". To coincide with these to releases, Matt set out on a 3 month tour of the US that March.

Matt has performed at major festivals such as The Hot August Blues Fest, Clearwater Folk Festival, and Great South Bay Music festival in Long Island New York. He was also chosen as one of 25 New York musicians to be a member of the much sought after slots in MUNY (Music Under New York) subway performance program. He is also one of the featured songwriters in an upcoming independent film about Greenwich Village folk music from the ‘60s through today called “Bleeker and Macdougal”.

The 2 albums we will cover are, as mentioned Tumbleweed, his full length album, readily available on Bandcamp, and his 4 song EP Songs in the Key of Blue, also on Bandcamp.

a4204859680_2Tumbleweed, an all-acoustic tribute to the feeling of limbo, as the cover implies, one is a puppet to another. The songs, with a strong sense of mirth, also have some darker signs that would imply a feeling of loss yet to be, but a hope for a brighter tomorrow anyway. Not a negative or depressing flow of complaints, but a whimsical and upbeat story in 12 parts. Seemingly as if to take a shallow breath between songs, the album is composed perfectly and in perfect order. Each song leading into the next and on to the end a single story that travels many lifetimes in a single voice. Matt Pless is of the new guard, a generation of bards with no loyalties to tradition, yet keep the faith with the virtue of a saint. Whereas Tumbleweed is available at his Bandcamp page for as little as zip, give this man at least a $20, very much worth every penny and if this is the beginning, one can only imagine what he will create tomorrow.

a0704039927_2Songs in the Key of Blue is amazing, where Tumbleweed was guitar only acoustic daydreams in verse, Songs in the Key of Blue is a sign of what Matt is capable of with a full entourage backing him up, with the accompaniment of a full band, his words hold an amazing power, bursting with thought provoking message and anger at the direction we are heading, the most powerful of these 60’s fueled rockets of truth is Breadline, every word rings true and the song is remarkably timeless. In fact all of the songs, The Devil May Care, I Hope You’re Happy Now and Barren Grove could be hits in each of their own right, but all 4 together on Songs in the Key of Blue is a grand combination and were meant to be heard.

Songs in the Key of Blue is available on Vinyl on OGC Records and on his Bandcamp Page, you can find all of his Releases, 12 in all, serious fun and serious music from Matt Pless. Follow Matt Pless on Facebook and visit his website http://www.mattpless.com

Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath – A Lighter Shade of Darkness

10546964_10152390018073751_7207409046657625740_oXombiewoof Magazine Interviews Beto Martinez from Brownout about new album Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath.

courtney-chavanell

Album Review and Interviewed by Joseph Timmons

Brown Sabbath is the alter ego of Austin-based psych-funk collective Brownout who delve deep into reinterpreting the catalog of metal godfathers, Black Sabbath. I want to start with the fact that this is not just a cover album, or even a close rendition, this album is a triumph of masterful composition and performance. I have heard some great covers, but this is so much more. Brownout has taken several tracks made famous by the masters of Metal, Black Sabbath and has rearranged and infused strong and hypnotic ethnic rhythms and Latin flavors to create a Funk / Metal sound that is wholly unique.

“Hand of Doom”, featuring The Black Angels’ Alex Maas on vocals, is the debut single that was first released last May as limited edition, colored splattered 10-inch vinyl with “The Wizard” as the B-side on the Ubiquity Records label. The full-length album, Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath, soon followed this past June to a much anticipated popular release.

Researching the band’s past interviews, Brownout guitarist Adrian Quesada was quoted “The Brown Sabbath idea started out like everything else we do, half inside joke, half psychotic. It was an overly ambitious attempt at challenging ourselves as musicians;” Adrian also commented “Bridging the gap between our music and Black Sabbath is not as far of a stretch as it might seem though. Sabbath was not only heavy, but soulful and funky in their own dark way. Half the band grew up as metal heads too, so it came naturally. The experience is already beginning to influence our next album of original music.”

tumblr_nbefmagZQG1r4w1xno1_500

Brownout, an 8-piece outfit formed ten years ago by members of Grammy Award-winning Latin revival orchestra Grupo Fantasma, since then Brownout evolved into a musical force all its own. After garnering their third Austin Music Award last year, the band has continued to produce music that is unflinchingly progressive, while evoking the classic influences of artists such as WAR, Cymande and Funkadelic. They’ve performed at events including Bonnaroo, High Sierra Music Festival, Pickathon, FFFFest, Bear Creek Music Festival, Utopia Festival and Pachanga Fest, while regularly touring the U.S. Brownout’s also served as a highly in-demand backing band for artists including Prince, Daniel Johnston, GZA and Bernie Worrell.

cover-artWith its latest recording, Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath, they remain true to the darkness, bombast and fuzz of Sabbath’s sound, while re-imagining the music with greasy Afro-Latin horns, hypnotic percussion and psyched-out, rare-groove improvisation. Every music critic and magazine or journal of music has found this group and the album to be a phenomenal and we anxiously want to see what could be coming next.

As for our review, Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath is a tribute to the legendary music of Black Sabbath, while also being an introduction, and for some of us “old timers” a reintroduction to Urban Groove / Funk Progression. Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath has the presence of a greatest hits or anthology album yet is both fresh and boldly expressive in its originality. By nature, cover songs / albums are all too often renditions of songs that wormed their way through top “40 Pop” or that great song that got way too much airplay and are now done so often they’ve become grotesques of their former selves, leaving the listener wanting to avoid ever listening to it again. Or worse yet, there are some songs that have been done so often, that you can’t remember who originally did the song. Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath has the following songs in its joyfully creative Vinyl Grooves – Wizzard, Iron Man, N.I.B., Black Sabbath, Hand of Doom, Into the Void and Planet Caravan. Now, another great feature of this is some of the songs are instrumental in their entirety, allowing this group of talented artists to truly work their magic on us, allowing the energy of the music and rhythms to flow gracefully from the speakers, and the vocalist while having amazing talents in his original works, does a flawless rendition of Ozzy’s singularly unique voice, while not “trying” to sound like Ozzy. It is no wonder that Ozzy himself has been a great supporter of the bands performances.

Brownout’s discography includes three previously released albums including Homenaje (Freestyle Records 2008), Aguilas & Cobras (Six Degrees 2009) and Oozy (Nat Geo 2012). Presently on tour, Brownout is filling every seat and gaining an even larger following in support this fourth studio album.

The members of Brownout are Gilbert Elorreaga, Mark Gonzales, Greg Gonzalez, Josh Levy, Sweet Lou, Beto Martinez, Adrian Quesada and John Speice. In our interview we have the pleasure of speaking with Beto Martinez for a look into the “behind the scene” point of view at the what, why and when of the inspiration of this album.

How did you get your start in music?

“I grew up near the border in Laredo Texas; I lived in an area where you heard mostly Mexican / Latin Music and “Pop” Music. I have always loved Rock & Roll; I remember my first album was Metal Health by Quiet Riot, soon after I was listening to bands like Sabbath and Metallica. At 13 I got my first guitar, I started practicing and soon after I met my bassist. We’ve played music together for years, we would play in my garage, a couple years later the band formed and we started playing gigs. It’s been fun and I really find I am lucky to be doing music professionally. We play in several bands but this lineup is the core of our music, we want to be versatile and do what we love.”

First question about Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath, Why the music of Black Sabbath?

“We wanted to create from music we respected and wanted to perform, this started really as a “one off”, we had not intended to do an entire album, once that came to be, we decided to choose music that we had to get right. Once in the studio, this album really took off and became a lot more than we had intended.”

Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath- Official Video

The songs you chose for Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath are the major hits of Black Sabbath that, in my opinion would be highly scrutinized. Why did you select the songs you did on Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath?

“Well, we felt that these were the best to do, the original Black Sabbath songs had a natural groove to them, they lent themselves to our style and we felt that we could give them our own twist that would be well received. So far we have not been wrong. For instance, our Saxophonist and Horn’s really went to work and it blows people’s minds live. Some the use of horns and other percussion elements added a special power to the groove.”

Thinking now about the recording process, in the studio, was the recording of this album what you thought it would be, or was there a transformation in material once you started working it?

I would have to really hand this one to our Drummer, his work was inspired and he took the complicated rhythm structure and the sound to a new level. The whole band worked to create a sound that would be fluid, not overthought. In fact, much of it was very natural.

So how has the national tour been so far?

Great, the tour has had fantastic turnouts and enthusiastic crowds. We had stated on the west coast, we are now in east coast and working the way back. Every show has been great. Admittedly, this was not an album we thought we would be putting so much into and we had late bookings. We have no international dates yet, but who knows, may happen.

Does Brownout, have any other tribute style albums planned, say Beatles or Led Zeppelin?

No, not at this time, we want to concentrate on our original material, we do put covers into our sets, but we are a group that wants to be recognized for our own music.

ep-cover-artI am a big fan of Album Art, your cover for Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath is really cool and has a nostalgic reflection to it, how did you get this caver done?

The album cover came together kind of by chance and worked great, it was an in house designer, and we felt it really portrayed what we wanted. The photo is from an old photo shoot we did a long time ago and the label has a great art team, we like it.

What do you see as the biggest help on the promotion and public response to Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath?

We’ve had some great support from public radio and the news media both locally and nationally, college radio and the really great independent stations. As far as the public, wow, it is really fantastic to look out from the stage and see all the people, I’m in a great band doing some great music, and it’s getting better each time we play.

Our special thanks to Beto Martinez for this interview from the road as the band is heading back west and to Brownout for recording an album that is powerful, inspiring and expressive. You can find Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath on Bandcamp and iTunes, additionally, follow Brownout on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud, and their website. You can also find them at their label’s website Ubiquity Records - http://www.ubiquityrecords.com.

In a Sea of Indie Labels, Driftwood Records is a lifeline for many bands that need Safe Harbor.

Interview with Dandy, Driftwood Records Owner and purveyor of Oregon’s most interesting Punk Label

Interviewed by Joseph Timmons of Xombiewoof Magazine

Ok, so I wax poetic and made this to sound like a scene from Moby Dick, but the fact is its rough for Indie record labels, one opens every day, and another closes. Fact is, so many great labels never last more than a couple of years with major backing and as many of you know, bands don’t often have enough options, pressing is costly and even with the internet making it “easier” for bands to be herd, who has time to sit at the computer all day and be in the studio?

I follow the Indie labels and connect with many over time; one label that came to my interest is Driftwood Records, a small label out of Eugene Oregon, so I set up to do an interview and found that this is the real deal in labels, not only do they have a large roster of artists and an online store at Bandcamp that is full of some very interesting titles, they tend to do short runs that sell out fast. Covering the genre of “Screamo”, “Emo”, Folk Punk, Alt Indie and Hardcore, Driftwood Records is a true “Me, Myself and I” operation, the company consists of the owner and one other person, sharing a flat and running it all from home. During the interview, I found out that Driftwood will often split or “foot” the cost of mastering and pressing, often running close to making no profit, which made me wonder why, so in this interview we learn that music must be food for the soul and it’s not just the artist that could starve.

So, how did Driftwood start?

Dandy: “I started out just making tapes and such for a few bands I knew, I never thought this would take over my life. Soon after I stated, band after band asked me to do a release, and Driftwood came to life. Now after just a few years I have made some sort of name for myself and we always have great responses to our artists”

Does this mean you are doing really well?

Dandy: “We’re surviving, in this area there are not a lot of venues for shows… heck, I have talked with other labels and it’s tough everywhere, with no places to play, the internet is swamped with bands just trying to get heard and we really have to push out name out there.”

If this is the case, why keep doing it?

Dandy: “It’s what I want to do, I love helping bands and this is my gig! I get into this and I love doing it.”

I see on your site you do more than just Vinyl, you do tapes too; do you get a lot of interest in Tape?

Dandy: “We sell just as much tape as everything else, well actually more… nobody likes or wants CDs anymore, hell, most of the time people download and make their own now. We have several online stores connected together, Bandcamp is by far the best and we, as well as others have some free downloads, some that are a set price and some that are “pay what you want”, and our Vinyl sells too, mostly collectors that want the picture discs or rare split singles, but everyone loves tape, it has something about it, not just because of the sound but there is something about it that just gets you. We also have shirts and posters, but Tapes sell good, and bands get more for their money. The average record o single will cost up to 2.00 each to make, so for a thousand that’s a big chunk, but tapes, we can make a few hundred tapes with labels for about a hundred bucks. Bands sell tapes at shows and make more money that way.”

Well, Vinyl and Tapes has made a major comeback, there are those of us that have always been collecting, but now everyone wants Vinyl in their stash, do you see this as a future benefit?

Dandy: “Hey, as long as there is a way to get the music out, I’ll try to make it work (laughs) got to eat, right?”

Where do you see Driftwood in about 2-3 years, still a humble home grown label or major player?

Dandy: “I just don’t want to be bankrupt! I have been doing this for a while and only now have I come to a point where I am not too deep in debt, hell, everyone is in debt! I know one label that has been in the biz for almost 10 years before they could quit their Day Jobs, as long as I can buy some soup from time to time, I’m good!”

- (At this time Dandy stopped to have a short conversation with his partner in crime, Phoebe (I think that’s how it’s spelled... I did not ask), there was laughter and some playful banter, then Dandy came back to say that they celebrated some great sales by buying some soup last night, and that eating is a bit of a privilege some days.)

Wait, so you actually sacrifice eating to keep the Business going?

Dandy: “To be fair, I don’t take too good a care of myself, I get wrapped up in this and it takes my mind so deep that I forget to eat, but my roommate reminds me and I eat, we are doing this by ourselves, I'm packing boxes while we speak and she is making the screens for some record sleeves were doing custom, got to do what needs to be done”

61457_171775136298211_1512897487_n

Driftwood Records has a YouTube Channel, Online Store and Bandcamp Site, as well as they make use of other social media, in a more candid statement, Dandy said he could quit this and find another job, easily, but does not want to, this is his dream, goal, vision… however you want to think of it, but more realistically, it’s his life. I will check back with Dandy in a few months, see how things are and remind him to eat, you go buy some albums now!

Support Local and Independent Music, support the dream Follow Driftwood Records on Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/DriftwoodRecords and check out their artists on their store page, you’ll find great music, and help people like Dandy and Phoebe, who are busy helping others make their dreams come true!

Electric Wake: Anthem of a Generation Living in an Angry World

10301606_703024043072234_2209153798077030352_nAlbum Review: Electric Wake – New Album by Ronny Munroe

Album Review by Joseph Timmons: Xombiewoof Magazine

The name Ronny Munroe is not new to the Metal Music world, as front man for the infamous foundation group Metal Church, his skill and abilities are legendary. Recently, Metal Church released “Generation Nothing” with Ronny at the head of the Juggernaut; once again, his voice brought new life into the music world, which in my opinion has been awash in mediocrity and lack of vision.

10006914_684135801627725_1229300418_nNow, Ronny has come forth from the studio and has given to us his latest Solo Album Electric Wake, which is as far from a eulogy in verse as it could be. Electric Wake is raw power in lyric and verse, musically striking and has given a new standard to reach for many would be thrashers.

11 tracks of pure energy, dark visions and harmonic greatness, Electric Wake floods your ears with the talents and collaborations of guitar legend George Lynch, guitarist Dave Rude of Tesla, the metal worlds femme fatal Pamela Moore (Queensrÿche’s "Sister Mary"), Paul Kleff (ex Firewolfe), David Donigian, Sean Baker and Tony Rossi, making this an album of epic proportions. Ronny Munroe's Electric Wake delivers as promised.

Ronny Munroe's Electric Wake is offered as his best work to date, I would say this is more of a tempting taste, a sinister sample of what is to come! Produced by Bruce Bouillet and mixed by Jon Wyman, Electric Wake is the 4th solo album by Ronny Munroe, capturing all the magic of the classic metal genre as well as setting new marks, which others will try to copy, but will never duplicate.

Ronny Munroe–United

In a statement, Ronny has said "I wanted to create something that was totally new, but at the same time allow all my influences to shine through". Ronny further elaborated "I put two years into the writing process of this album, but when it came time to start recording, I threw everything out the window and just went with my gut and it worked out better than I could have imagined".

1011791_689781524396486_2296748185865522088_n

Ronny Munroe's Electric Wake is not only a soon to be keystone in any Metal Collection, but it is further proof that Rat Pak Records, which seemingly came from the shadows as a small independent label is actually the new vanguard of original and innovative Metal, with artists like Beasto Blanco, George Lynch, Lynch Mob, KXM, T&N, Pamela Moore, Jeff Labar and Many others, making their catalog of albums some of the most sought after and ingenious collaborations of artists that made the Metal World what it is today.
