When given the opportunity to interview Dale Bozzio for this article about her new album “Missing In Action” prior to today’s groundbreaking release, I jumped at the chance. I found Dale to be a warm and as expected, and a joy to interview. Dale has been hard at work developing this new album, but unlike other artists coming back after a while out of the spotlight, Dale Bozzio kept to her natural styling, not to embrace a style or sound that is not hers, but to “Rev Up” her trademark sound for a new generation to discover. Dale expressed her secret to her staying power and longevity to not paying attention to modern trends, Dale said in confidence “I sometimes place myself in a space where I wonder who could I be if I were not myself, and I realize I can’t, I can only be myself and to that I have to be true and keep moving forward”. As a self-proclaimed introvert, she becomes a different person, finding comfort on the stage to express herself without reservation and empowered.

When Missing Persons first hit the streets back in the 80’s, the group quickly rocketed to the top of the charts with a new and energetic sound that would become foundations for other artists to follow yet never duplicate. Dale Bozzio, the singer of Missing Persons was a new wave vision of beauty who would be many a young man’s dream girl. Prior to her formation of Missing Persons, Dale Bozzio had already created a legacy in the music industry through her work with Frank Zappa, whom was a close and dear friend of Dale that took a personal interest in her development.

Dale and I talked about her work with Frank Zappa and her memories of him and what it was like to be a part of his world, “I was truly blessed to have worked with Frank. I met him in 1976, which now feels like a million years ago. It kind of blows my mind that the things I talk about now like my career, my music and my past work are from 30 years ago, but it feels like it was just yesterday”. Dale Added “I am originally from Boston, in my youth I took elocution lessons to improve my speech, when I met Frank he said to me that I had a sound that would be remembered and to never change it”. In live performances, Dale would stride onto the stage and the roar of her fans would drown out the most powerful of sound systems, proof that Zappa was right.

With additional credits to her versatility such as videos, movies and her various ventures in music, including working with Frank Sinatra, Dale would be poised to accomplish anything she desired. Yet, as fate would have it, life would take dale from the stage and into the role of wife, mother and her legacy would be that of an enigma, leaving our sight as quickly as she arrived.

Or so it would seem…

Dale Bozzio, one of the most recognizable singers to come out of the ‘80s art rock movement, never stopped performing and has kept active in the music world, no longer gracing the large arenas but keeping her performances small and personal, keeping her music intimate with a loving and very loyal fan base. A true original whose signature vocal style was matched only by her iconic outfits that set the standard for flamboyant fashion in rock music is still, many years later, a beautiful and iconic artist that has decided to come back in full force to those that would be waiting. With a life’s story of ups and downs and personal achievements and tragedies, Dale Bozzio is back and she is a stronger and more powerful artist than she ever was.

The album, “Missing In Action”, released today on March 4th on both CD & Vinyl by Cleopatra Records, Is a masterpiece of originality, not a backtrack to the 80’s or a “comeback” attempt, but the creation of an audio tapestry that is, in essence, a tribute to who she was, is and will continue to be. “Missing In Action” was produced by the multi-talented Billy Sherwood, a member of the legendary progressive rock institution Yes, who worked closely with Dale to craft an album that can stand alongside the Missing Persons catalog while still showcasing Dale’s growth as both a performer and a person. Dale told me “it was amazing to work with Billy Sherwood, he could read me and we had a great creative chemistry”. In our interview, Dale reflected on the 10 song album, noting song titles rich with personal meaning such as “Do Or Die”, “Walk Into The Sun,” and “Speed Of Light”, ”The More We Love” and others are not just beautiful songs, they are also testimonials to her life. “I take things to the heart; I want to make things better for the world, I am not greedy or selfish, I just want to give”, I would say it is with this philosophy that Dale is able to create such great music.

“The More We Love,” which Dale recorded just days after her mother passed away and contains the most moving performance of Dale’s long, historic career as well as her admiration for a person that inspired her to be the best she could be. Dale dedicated much of her work to her family; in commentary she told me that her children were the light of her life and that they are a driving force for her and her greatest supporters “her best friends”. “Everything that I believe in and cherish is in them”, after a laugh, Dale became a bit serious and said “We sometimes take so much of our life for granted, we need to take every day as it comes and enjoy living for its own reward.. We have to face life with courage”.

“Missing In Action”, has been in the making for over two decades and is a triumph to Dale’s ability to empower herself and her fans through her music. To quote Dale Bozzio “Life is precious journey that we have to experience, every day that comes could be either the last day of our life, or the first day or our rebirth or new life and I never do anything that I could not go to sleep with on my conscious”.

CD Review: Bear’s Sonic Journals Presents: Big Brother and The Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin- Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968

Today, on the southwest corner of Market and Van Ness, at 10 South Van Ness Ave and 1545 Market Street in San Francisco, resides a car dealership. Standing in front of the building, one would never know the history of the Music Scene of this area in the late 1960’s, or the historic event that took place within building. In 1968 this building was the famed Carousel Ballroom, a concert hall that had seen the performances of many of the popular acts and was birthplace to many more. One such 60’s super group was Big Brother and The Holding Company featuring the versatile, bluesy and completely unique Janis Joplin. The Carousel Ballroom was originally known as the El Patio Ballroom and it was located on the upper floor of a car dealership on the southwest corner of the building, and from this lofty psychedelic playground the sounds of a cultural and social revolution were heard.

Owsley Stanley, also known as “Bear”, was an essential and transitional personality in the development of the San Francisco Bay counter-culture and the Music Scene as a whole. His early activities spanned the Beat-era years of Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters, but he played an equally important role during the explosion of 1960's Psychedelic culture. As a brilliant and eclectic sound engineer, he became best known simply as 'Bear' –a magician-like figure able to use his keen sense of audio technologies to record what would be known as the best quality recordings, even by today’s standards. "Bear", was internationally celebrated, becoming an iconic figure (producer, engineer & artist) to psychedelic rock bands of the era. It was in San Francisco that he would work with the great acts of the day, and through his genius, their music became notorious.

Big Brother and The Holding Company had already been a very popular group, but when Janis Joplin joined in 1966 and began recording with them on their 2 albums – Big Brother & the Holding Company and Cheap Thrills, which were instant hits, one would say “the party really started”. Janis sang from the heart, as a woman from a small Texas town, with a troubled youth and hopes and dreams, Janis was able to find in the San Francisco Music scene what some would think impossible, a real chance to tell her story, and a chance to reach out to the youth of America and help them find their dreams as well.

It would be a weekend set on June 22^nd and 23^rd, at the Carousel Ballroom in 1968, Big Brother and The Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin would play both nights, the tickets for Saturday night was 2.50, for Sunday it was 2.00, but the resulting recordings would be priceless, and now after his unfortunate passing, the estate of Owsley “Bear” Stanley and Columbia / Legacy Records present to you this magical musical event, in an audio soundscape that truly makes it possible you to feel like you are there. Bear’s Sonic Journals Presents: Big Brother and The Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin- Live at the Carousel Ballroom, recorded in a pseudo stereo, since stereo recording equipment really did not have a live performance element at the time, “Bear” was able to create what could be considered the first “Surround Sound” experience.

Bear’s Sonic Journals Presents: Big Brother and The Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin- Live at the Carousel Ballroom has live renditions of songs that were sung as only Janis Joplin could, with the bluesy true to life emotion that she was to be remembered for. Normally, I don’t list all the songs on an album, but for this momentous release, I feel you should know what’s in store for the listener:

You may recognize many of the now famous and legendary tracks, but some have only now been heard as they were first played live, some were changed or produced differently in the studio, so you actually have a connection to the past in its original, raw and emotionally charged state. Some of these songs were only available in 45rpm and never made the full albums. I will again touch upon the quality and style in which the tracks were recorded, the quality of sound in not only extraordinary due to the clarity, no buzz or overladen hum, the instruments and vocals are completely “legible” and can be told apart. In addition, if you experiment with the balance from left to right, you can hear just music, or mostly vocals and highs – to truly get the right sound, you have to move all your speakers into a “wall of sound”, speakers side by side and adjust volumes so it sounds like the music is coming right out of the amplifiers, like the band is in your room, this is the best way to get the full range of sound from your system.

Bear’s Sonic Journals Presents: Big Brother and The Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin- Live at the Carousel Ballroom is more than live concert material, but a “Way-Back Time Machine” (thank you Mr. Peabody) that will bring you back to the energy filled streets of San Francisco, and directly into the forge of the peace & love movement, social change and the search for enlightenment though the open exchange of ideas though true freedom.

From the initial performance hall title, Carousel Ballroom, to The Fillmore West, to other names, to other businesses, to a vacant space above a car dealership, to now a car parts room, the physical existence has changed and changed, but if you close your eyes, and listen closely, you can hear them still playing, and still hear Janis belting out the blues.

April 20, 1951 a child was born into a world that would someday know the miracle of a voice that would inspire feelings of love and entertain millions. New York, NY – Columbia/Legacy Recordings celebrates Janis Joplin with the release of two essential new titles in the catalog of the American blues-rock-country-soul singer: Janis Joplin - The Pearl Sessions, a two-disc set premiering newly discovered studio recordings produced by Paul Rothchild (available Tuesday, April 17) and Big Brother and the Holding Company Featuring Janis Joplin - Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968, an electrifying full-length concert recorded and produced for release by the legendary soundman Owsley ("Bear") Stanley (available Tuesday, March 13). The Pearl Sessions is an historic expansion of Joplin's final studio album, providing fascinating new insight into Janis' creative process through a range of rare and previously unreleased material.

Newly available bonus material on The Pearl Sessions includes the original master mono mixes of the album's singles ("Cry Baby," "Me and Bobby McGee," "Half Moon," "Get It While You Can," "Move Over," "A Woman Left Lonely") and a full-length second disc showcasing Joplin live in the studio performing never-before-heard takes of Pearl classics. From behind-the-scenes banter to full finished takes, The Pearl Sessions shows the complexity of Joplin's genius, the tough and vulnerable aspects of her personality, her lightning sense of humor, and her razor-sharp attention to the details of her craft. Offering fresh perspectives on the more familiar "official" versions of the songs, alternate takes of "Get It While You Can," the Janis Joplin-composed "Move Over," and others open up unexpected new dimensions in the material and in the sublime nuances of Joplin's delivery.

The Pearl Sessions offers an unprecedented opportunity to be in the room with Janis, her producer, Paul Rothchild, and the members of the Full Tilt Boogie Band (guitarist John Till, pianist Richard Bell, bassist Brad Campbell, drummer Clark Pierson, organist Ken Pearson) as they create one of the enduring masterpieces of rock 'n' roll.

Originally released on January 11, 1971 (three months after her passing on October 4, 1970), Pearl debuted Joplin's final finished studio recordings. The only album Joplin ever recorded with the Full Tilt Boogie Band, the touring ensemble that had backed her on the Festival Express (a mythic 1970 concert tour by railroad across Canada with the Grateful Dead, the Band and others), Pearl included canonical studio recordings of songs that had been introduced to audiences on tour. A live version of "Tell Me Mama" (a song not included on the original Pearl), recorded during the legendary Toronto Festival Express date, is included as a bonus track on The Pearl Sessions. Also included as a bonus is Janis' scorching live version of "Half Moon," recorded for her appearance on "The Dick Cavett Show" on August 3, 1970.

Peaking at #1 on the Billboard 200, a position it held for nine weeks, Pearl included some of Janis's most familiar and best-loved performances including her cover of Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee" and her off-the-cuff a cappella "Mercedes Benz." A never released alternate take and the original "Me and Bobby McGee" demo are both included on The Pearl Sessions.

When putting together material for a 40th anniversary edition of Pearl, researchers discovered a treasure-trove of previously uncatalogued audio tapes from the album's sessions, produced by Paul Rothchild. An industry legend, perhaps best-known for producing the first five Doors albums, Rothchild further solidified his position in music history with his work on Pearl.

The Pearl Sessions brings together the original mono versions of the album’s 45s and the original LP tracks alongside a revelatory cavalcade of newly-discovered alternate versions, outtakes and vocal takes that put you in the studio with Janis Joplin.

A limited edition double 10" high fidelity vinyl gatefold release, Highlights from The Pearl Sessions will be available exclusively for Record Store Day (April 21, 2012). A companion to the newly curated two CD edition of Joplin's farewell masterpiece, Pearl, this vinyl release presents previously unreleased and seldom heard takes and early versions of classic songs, culled from the recently discovered tapes used to create The Pearl Sessions.

A limited edition 12" vinyl edition of Pearl will also be available on Tuesday, April 17. A breakout from the Classic LP Collection box, the album is pressed at RTI on 180-gram audiophile vinyl.

The release of The Pearl Sessions marks a renewed focus on Janis Joplin and the continuing influence of her music. Columbia/Legacy Recording will release Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968, a previously unavailable live concert recording of Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin,recorded June 23, 1968 by legendary soundman Owsley Stanley, a/k/a "Bear," who supervised the mastering of this release before his fatal car accident in his adopted homeland of Australia on March 12, 2011. Dedicated to Bear, the album will be released on March 13, 2012, marking the one-year anniversary of his passing.

A special collector's edition of Live at the Carousel Ballroom will be available in a special two 12" vinyl LP gatefold collector's edition on Tuesday, March 27. "This evening was special," remembers Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart was in the Carousel Ballroom that night in June '68. "The Bear loved Janis. Her ability to sing multiple tones simultaneously and then morph them into heart wrenching chords was singular. Her primal cry, filled with tenderness and hurt, was delivered at 140 decibels as the band pushed here into the slipstream. There could be no one more qualified to bring Big Brother and the Holding Company to life than Owsley. Together they captured the magic. The Bear sure had it right this night."

As potentially being the complete and definitive collection of  Janis Joplin’s work and her short but exciting career in music, these offerings would be the key part of any rock and roll fan, historian or audiophile.

“THE YEAR OF THE DOORS” officially kicked off on Monday, January 9 at noon Eastern when the iconic rock band officially debut the first new, completely unreleased song in 40 years, “SHE SMELLS SO NICE.” The bluesy track captures the band--organist RAY MANZAREK, guitarist ROBBY KRIEGER, drummer JOHN DENSMORE and late singer JIM MORRISON--joyfully barreling through the full-throttle original. Bruce Botnick, the album’s co-producer with the band, recently made the discovery while reviewing the L.A. WOMAN session tapes. The song premiered on the band’s Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/thedoors) on Monday and will then be serviced to radio the following day.

Next up in news from THE DOORS: On Friday, January 20 at 7:30 PM there will be a one-time special screening of “Mr. Mojo Risin’: The Story of L.A. Woman” (Eagle Rock Entertainment DVD/Blu-ray) at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, CA with special surprise guests. Jac Holzman--who signed the group to Elektra Records--and Los Angeles rock radio veteran Jim Ladd will present the film and take questions about the group’s final album and legacy afterwards at a public Q&A session.

“Mr. Mojo Risin’: The Story of L.A. Woman”(Eagle Rock Entertainment DVD/Blu-ray) is told through new interviews with MANZAREK, KRIEGER and DENSMORE as well as Elektra Records founder JAC HOLZMAN, original manager Bill Siddons, engineer/co-producer Bruce Botnick and others. The high-definition video also features live and studio performances as well as rare archival photos. This fascinating documentary contains rare footage of The Doors in the studio and on stage. The documentary was made with the full involvement, approval and cooperation of The Doors.

The group’s final album--1971’s L.A. WOMAN, with the signature hits “L.A. Woman,” “Love Her Madly” and “Riders On The Storm”--is being celebrated with a special 40^th anniversary two-CD release from Rhino and a behind-the-scenes DVD/Blu-ray from Eagle Rock Entertainment.

In addition to “She Smells So Nice,” the second disc of the L.A. WOMAN reissue includes eight never-before-heard versions of songs from the album. Alternate takes of “L.A. Woman,” “Love Her Madly” and “Riders On The Storm” offer a fresh view on this landmark album, which was the group’s sixth straight Top 10. The studio chatter between the songs is a revelation, transporting listeners to The Doors Workshop: the West Hollywood rehearsal space where they recorded the album with Botnick. One segment in particular captures a fascinating moment of inspiration when Morrison suggests they add the now-iconic thunderstorm sound effects to the beginning of “Riders On The Storm.”

L.A. WOMAN marked THE DOORS’ swan song, as MORRISON would pass away a few months after its release. At the time, Rolling Stone’s Robert Meltzer called it “The Doors’ greatest album…A landmark worthy of dancing in the streets (5/27/71).” The first band to release eight consecutive platinum albums, THE DOORS were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007.
