CROOKED EYE TOMMY PERFORMS AT 3RD ANNUAL LIL' EASY BACKYARD PARTY - BENEFIT FOR STROKE AWARENESS FOUNDATION

Crooked Eye Tommy joins some of the best blues talent around onstage for the 3rd Annual Lil' Easy Backyard Party, Saturday, September 19, at the Poor House Bistro, 91 S. Autumn St. in San Jose.

This is a benefit for the Stroke Awareness Foundation in remembrance of the Poor House Bistro's owner's mother, Sally Meduri. "Once a year this special two-day event offers an intimate beautiful setting. A big shade tent, wood dance floor, flowers on the tables, (and) tasty food and beverage. Seating is limited. The goal is to raise money for a great cause and make sure that everyone enjoys a comfortable environment", says the Poor House about this special event, which, in addition to Ventura, Calif. blues act Crooked Eye Tommy, also features such notables as Mitch Woods; the Chris Cain Band; Kim Wilson's Blues All-Stars; Rick Estrin & The Nightcats; and many others.

 

"This (fundraiser) is very near to my heart. Our grandfather and my mother's sister both died of strokes", says Tommy Marsh of Crooked Eye Tommy. "

Showtime is 11 a.m.-10 p.m. General Admission tickets $40 (one day), $60 (two days - the event also happens on Sunday, September 20). VIP 1-day tickets, $60; 2 days, $100. Reservations required; limited seating available.

In regards to the album, Butterflies and Snakes has the sound of the coast, flowing tones and rhythms steeped in Blues / Funk combinations, Jazzy overtones, solid lyrics and reminds me of the stone grooves that were prevalent in the late 60’s / early 70’s Blues – Rock Explosion that fueled bands like Blind Faith, Marshall Tucker, Grateful Dead and others. These hometown heroes of Ventura California have a serious side, “Serious Fun” and they show it on this album and on stage, their live performances have been heavily touted in the music press as being the “First stop on the endless highway of fun”, and in my opinion, the industry could learn a thing or two of what real talent is when listening to Crooked Eye Tommy Butterflies and Snakes.

Butterflies and Snakes, a collection of all original blues tracks, written by Tommy Marsh and powered by an ensemble of master musicians, gets your heart racing and your feet moving, the songs range from somber to celebratory and each features several of the blues styles in each track, never dry or “done before” each is unique when compared to the other album tracks and every song could be a number one hit, but being a hit does not strike me as Crooked Eye Tommy’s goal, but to be, just be the best you could see in a close quarter, crowded smokey dance hall with dance card one hand and a bourbon in the other.

Tracks like Come on In, I Stole The Blues, Tide Pool, After the Burn, Mad and Disgusted and others on this album have brass that is to be admired and respected, as well as the feeling that these men have cut their teeth on the best and the worst that life had to offer, but bit back hard. In the words of Tommy Marsh, “Come on In, You’re always welcome here, Make yourself at Home” among the Butterflies and Snakes.

Album Review: Rosa’s Lounge by Howard and the White Boys

Howard & the White Boys, founded by Howard McCullum (Vocals, Bass), Jim Christopulos (Drums), Rocco Calipari(Guitar), Pete Galanis (Guitar), was formed in 1988 and began jamming together just for fun, but their fast-growing popularity soon convinced them they could make a career of it. Their reputation grew in Chicago and after a short period of times, and many great gigs, they got their first big break by opening for B.B. King. Soon after, they began performing with the biggest names in blues: Koko Taylor, Otis Rush, Albert King, Junior Wells, Lonnie Brooks, Luther Allison, Bo Diddley, and Chuck Berry. Howard and the White Boys sing the blues and live a musically charmed life to a loyal fan base that grows with every performance they play.

Rosa's Lounge, the most recent offering, is named after the legendary Chicago club where the band's new CD was recorded. Captured live on one of those magical nights where the crowd and band are both fueled with energy and passionate revel. Howard and the White Boys play one of its best sets ever, proving they are one of the best live Blues bands to grace the nighttime stage.

Rosa's Lounge has been touted as a favorite of many music critics and those in the know, The Chicago Sun-Times recently said "You can't see this high-energy, good time band at a club without leaving with a smile on your face." The band is now focusing on touring to support the new CD and working on material for their next one.

Rosa's Lounge is an expression of human experience, songs of love, loss and all that lay between, Howard and The White Boys hit the nail on the head with this album, precision performance and a creative composition that makes this a great Live album to not only listen to, but you can’t help but want to sing along. This album is captivating and solid, with reverence to the Blues but a thoroughly light hearted approach. Rosa's Lounge speaks volumes in every song, from the powerful opening track Heat Seeing Missile to the 11^th track That’s Alright, Rosa's Lounge is pure live excitement, Howard and the White Boys have certainly made their soft feathery bed of impassioned harmonious bliss, the Blues have been good to these fortunate sons of the Chicago music scene, in this “City on the Make”.
