Jack Johnson Honors the Santa Barbara Bowl with the All At Once Sustainability Award

AllAtOnce018

Water Refill Station Unveiled at Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to Reduce Single Use Plastic Waste at Concerts

On Tuesday, musician and environmentalist, Jack Johnson presented the Santa Barbara Bowl today with a custom Water Refill Station, in support of the Johnson’s All At Once Sustainability Award, which recognizes venues making a strong commitment to green practices and the environment. Water Refill Stations will also be presented to the two other award winners, the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland (IMP Presents), and the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in New York (Live Nation).

Last December, the Santa Barbara Bowl with promoter Nederlander Concerts, received an inaugural All At Once Sustainability Award in the “Green Leader” category, for ongoing excellence in waste reduction and sustainability and for making every effort to meet Johnson’s Environmental Rider during his 2014 From Here To Now To You Tour. As a result of the award and water refill station, fans will now be able to refill reusable water bottles and cups from the venue, cutting back on plastic waste at the Santa Barbara Bowl shows.

The Bowl is being recognized as a leader in venue greening and for implementing best practices, piloting new initiatives, and setting the stage for others to follow. The Greening the Bowl campaign aims at making the venue as close to carbon neutral as possible by decreasing the Bowl’s ecological footprint.

Recent greening initiatives include removal of non-native plants, a bike valet service, solar power, and implementation of waste-diversion recycling and composting programs. Additionally, as part of Jack Johnson’s 2014 shows, the Santa Barbara Bowl in collaboration with LoaTree, launched the innovative #MyPintAndMe initiative to reduce single-use disposable plastics by selling customized pint cups. Bowl patrons can bring their pint cups to every Bowl show and receive drink discounts for the life of the cup. Since the inception of the program the SB Bowl has seen cost savings from the reduction in plastic cups purchased and waste hauling fees Rick Boller, Executive Director Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation, states “We are honored to receive the All At Once Sustainability Award. We have enjoyed our on-going partnership with everyone on Jack Johnson’s team and their support and assistance in launching all of our Greening the Bowl initiatives. We mostly want to recognize and thank our patrons for their active participation with the MyPintAndMe program. It is exciting to have so many supporters do their part in reducing over 10,000 plastic cups since Jack Johnson’s concerts in 2014.”

Johnson, whose music career began in Santa Barbara, is proud of his hometown venue’s greening efforts and specifically their commitment to reducing single-use plastics. “Being an ocean loving community we all appreciate the Bowl’s leadership in keeping plastic out of the waste stream, knowing that so much of it finds its way to the sea,” said Johnson. The award ceremony is timely, as Johnson recently returned from the 5 Gyres SEA Change expeditions from the Bahamas to Bermuda, conducting research on plastic ocean pollution, where he was able to see environmental impacts firsthand and discuss solutions with leading scientists, artists, and ocean advocates. While in the Bahamas, Johnson was also designated as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Program to help promote environmental causes, including plastic pollution initiatives.

In addition to recognizing outstanding green venues like the Santa Barbara Bowl, Johnson continues to improve his own sustainability practices on the road. The 2014 From Here To Now To You Tour eliminated over 18,392 single-use plastic bottles with water refill stations and reusables, supported 35 local farms with the purchase of locally grown and organic produce, sourced over 10,054 gallons of sustainable biodiesel and offset an estimated 2,462,600 pounds of CO2 through green touring and fan participation.

Through Johnson’s All At Once campaign, the tour supported over 150 community groups focusing on plastic free initiatives, sustainable local food systems, and other hands-on environmental projects.

Norah Jones returns to the beautiful Santa Barbara Bowl on Tuesday, August 7th

Nederlander Presents…

NorahJones1byFrankWOckenfels3image

WITH SPECIAL GUEST

Norah Jones returns to the beautiful Santa Barbara Bowl on Tuesday, August 7th, with special guest.

Tickets go on sale Saturday, March 31st at 11am.

Norah Jones’ new collaboration with Danger Mouse, called Little Broken Hearts has expanded her sound in thrilling and characteristically subtle ways. Twelve darkly luminous songs. Twelve little broken hearts. Each an exploration of wounded emotions from various perspectives that invariably leads to a place of beauty and uplift.

Jones says that as she worked to fit the songs together into a workable sequence, she was pleasantly surprised to discover that it coalesced into a unified statement – even “Happy Pills,” with its talk of “tryin’ to make it so I never see your face again,” revolves around the overall theme. “I didn’t expect all the lyrics to tie in so well, especially since we wrote in such a spontaneous way. It turns out to be kind of a story. It has these different dimensions. Things sneak up on you. And even though the record has all these cool sounds and interesting grooves that are Brian’s signature, mostly I’m proud of our writing together. The songs themselves.”

10 years after she first performed at SXSW, Jones made a triumphant return to the festival the other week, performing Little Broken Hearts in its entirety in front of an enraptured capacity crowd. The Associated Press praised the new songs, calling them “stylish yet deeply emotional,” adding that “she showed fans a different side” and that the album is “a departure for Jones and another step in her evolution.” USA Today wrote “sometimes sweet and sometimes spooky, the songs, co‐written and produced by Danger Mouse on the album, have atmospheric weight performed live also,” and highlighted the “cheery, cutting” lead single “Happy Pills.”

Don’t miss your chance to see Norah Jones at the Santa Barbara Bowl on Tuesday, August 7th, with special guest.

Tickets range from $39 to $69, plus applicable service charges.

The Santa Barbara Bowl is located at 1122 N. Milpas St., Santa Barbara, CA 93103, 805-962-7411.

Introducing the Secret Room

Tonesec

The Secret Room is a website where players will have access to a vast repository of tips, tricks, and techniques — the kind of "secrets" that some musicians jealously protect. But before being admitted to this password-protected site, visitors must contribute one of their own tone secrets — the kind of hard-won musical wisdom that is almost too good to share.

Once players submit a secret, they get to access all the other exclusive secrets. They can also comment on the secrets and rate them. And just to keep things lively, the highest rated secret between now and March 1st, 2012, will receive a Godin Summit CT, a lovely and versatile carved-top solidbody electric guitar that sells for around $1,000. Second and third place winners receive a set of Seymour Duncan pickups of their choice.

The Secret Room will have no ads, spam, or blatant self-promo. Just lots of great tone secrets. The site’s curator is Joe Gore, musician, writer, and editor of the blog tonefiend.com. The sponsor is Seymour Duncan, a company dedicated to helping guitarists and bassists own their tones.

The Secret Room has up until this point been existing out of view, gathering many closely guarded tips from well known artists, techs, session players and recording experts.

You can read more about the Secret Room (and submit a secret!) here: http://www.seymourduncan.com/tonefiend/what-is-the-secret-room/

Nederlander Presents…
FLORENCE + THE MACHINE WITH SPECIAL GUEST BLOOD ORANGE
PRESENTED BY MSN

Florence-and-The-Machine-10.6.11

Saturday, April 14th • 7:00pm - Santa Barbara Bowl

On the heels of the November release of the stunning CEREMONIALS CD, one of 2011’s most critically acclaimed albums, Florence & The Machine are heading to the states for a 15 city tour presented by MSN that begins on April 14th at the Santa Barbara Bowl with stops at Coachella (April 15 and 22) and one show at New York’s Radio City Music Hall (May 8), it was announced today by her record label Universal Republic.

With recent appearances on Saturday Night Live, GMA, X‐Factor, The View, VH 1 Divas and Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Years Eve, Florence fans will at last get to enjoy the star in a triumphant return to the live stage. Florence & The Machine are expected to perform songs from CEREMONIALS as well as songs from her multi‐platinum debut album LUNGS. Florence & The Machine will also be appearing on an upcoming MTV Unplugged and Austin City Limits on January 28th.

Her April/May tour follows her last appearance in the US, which included sold out dates at Summerstage and the Greek in LA aswell as the Bonnaroo Music Festival and four stadium shows with U2. “As our goal is to ‘keep you in the know’ about what’s happening in your world, supporting the tour is a natural fit,” said Rob Bennett, partner of network programming for MSN.

CEREMONIALS, recorded at the famed Abbey Road Studios and produced by Paul Epworth (Adele) was released in the US on November 1st and debuted on the Billboard Top 100 Charts at No. 6. It received glowing reviews including Four Stars (****) from Rolling Stone, US Magazine, NY Post and scores of other publications. It was on a slew of Top Ten Best Albums including Time, Entertainment Weekly and People. Amongst the raves: “Like Them (U2), Florence and the Machine are a true band, who channel garage‐rock camaraderie into a huge, lashing sound more fit for an Olympian mountain peak than a garage. And like U2, Florence and the Machine are fronted by a singer with the pipes, and the shamelessness, to pull off the melodrama – to turn the ridiculous into the sublime,” Rolling Stone. “A bold, epic album of rare transcendence,” commented US Magazine…“A star at the ascent of her rise,” Newsweek. “Stunning sophomore effort. Florence sings as sweetly as a nightingale,” NY Post.

Nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist and an MTV Video of the Year Award with unforgettable performances on 2010’s MTV Video Music Awards, the Grammys and the Academy Awards, Florence Welch is poised to cast her spell as she dances across US concert stages.
