Get into The Spaces Between

Front imageAlbum Review: Let's Leave It At This For Now

Artist: The Spaces Between

Self-produced Independent Album featuring Jon Anderson of YES

Review by Joseph Timmons: Xombiewoof Magazine

With an organic, flowing and retro sound, The Spaces Between have been performing to standing room only crowds and as of late been gaining great popularity here locally on the Central Coast of California with their ambient sound with alluring and progressive tempos.

facebook roxyThis unified trio, Andrew Rubin on lead guitar, Noah Colton on bass and vocals and Liam Smith on drums have proven themselves to be not only serious musicians but musical visionaries inspired by genres including funk, jazz, alternative and rock n' roll. With many performances at notable venues such as the Whisky a Go-Go, the Roxy, the Viper Room, and the Live Oak Music Festival, the Spaces Between have produced and released their first full-length album, "Let's Leave It At This For Now..." is now available on limited-edition CD and on iTunes.

Let's Leave It At This For Now is Co-produced and mixed by current Blind Melon vocalist Travis Warren, the album features eight intrinsic and avant-garde tracks and features a very special guest appearance by the voice of Jon Anderson of YES.

First listening to Let's Leave It At This For Now , you get a sense of 70’s and 80’s inspired pieces but not with the “poppish” or repetitive “hum-drum” ego pop sound, I would say they have more of a progressive / power trio feel and fall strongly in line with the likes of Brian Ferry, Robert Fripp or their contemporaries. This album has a warm sound with an almost “Day Glow” pop that calls for attention but is not overwhelming. Persuasive and ambient harmonies create a dreamlike state of musical bliss.

Online streaming of Let's Leave It At This For Now is available at www.reverbnation.com/thespacesbetween and you can find out more at the group’s website http:// www.thespacesbetweenband.com. Other contact and social pages include their Facebook page, http:// www.facebook.com/spacesbetweenband and performance footage on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/thespacesbetweenband.

WINNERRRR

Vocalist Jon Anderson of YES whom appeared on the track Orchasm has said in comment that they were “a great band and excellent guys” which from the founding father of progressive music is a statement of faith for a group of musicians of their youth. Key tracks on the album- Independence, Jubilation, Century, Let it Out have strong hit song qualities and would be anthem tracks if given their due.

Get into The Spaces between, Let's Leave It At This For Now will be this summer’s breakout indie hit!

Sir Madam Bearing Crooked Teeth

1389204003_SirMadam-album-600pxSelf-Claimed “Indie Garage Rock Band” is a whole lot more than imaginable.

Album Review of Crooked Teeth, Sir Madam’s Debut Album Release

Reviewed by Joseph Timmons of Xombiewoof Magazine

1524499_507522266028636_2017854020_oSir Madam is composed of two very serious, talented and soon to be infamous Musicians - Kishori Holiday on Guitar and Vocals while the rhythm is kept by the formidable percussion style of Andrew Garza. Originating out of Huntington Beach, California, their sound is more back streets New Orleans meets rockabilly Sinister Swing with a hint of Blues just to take the edge off the music fix. Sir Madam is more than just a “two piece garage rock band” as they humbly state in their Facebook and Web Site biography, they have a dark and brooding sound, and as I said before, a bit “Sinister”, luring you in with a smile while hiding the club behind their waistcoat.

Crooked Teeth–Sir Madam Video

Sir Madam's music is reminiscent of the Pretenders, The Misfits and a bit like The Cramps. Andrew’s evenly rhythmic drumming keeps the music in perfect time and swing, while Kishori’s dark and pleasingly seductive voce in entrancing yet exciting and persuasive. Sir Madame has been compared to other leading duos like The White Stripes and The Black Keys, they look to expand on the groundwork of the bands that came before and will make a strong name for them.

Sir Madam, while being a 2 piece ensemble has surprisingly full sound, Kishori Holiday plays with a ferocity and level of energy that is seen in larger groups, but she does it all on her own. Sir Madame is an enigma, combining the avant-garde, punk-rock-metal, with pop and groove inspirations.

Crooked Teeth is the debut album release by Sir Madam was recorded and mixed and completed in only three days in a studio located in Silverlake, California. Produced by Scott Holiday (of the Rival Sons), is touted as “an honest, raw, impulsive and off the cuff album”. But to hear it, you know it is not just “Slapped Together” or “Grungy”. Nor is the music over worked or “labored”, its sound is vibrant, unique and inspiring to hear.

The track listing comprises what will be multiple favorites on the club scene and smokey pub crawlers looking for a night out of revelry. The album (as set for streaming on ReverbNation) opens with the title track Crooked Teeth, followed by titles named Black Moon, My Dear My Darling, Gotcha Wantcha, Dorothy May, Man Down and others that keep you glued to the album, which if you want my opinion is more like a live set, full of power and thrills.

You can get their album from their web site http://sirmadamband.com or stream from https://www.reverbnation.com/sirmadamband, but Buy the Album, really, they have worked hard for it and this debut album is a triumph, and if this is only the beginning, I can’t wait to see what comes around the corner next from out of the shadows. Follow Sir Madam on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/sirmadamband and get into it.

Just remember to be polite and best mind your Manners, Respect Sir Madam or they may drag you down to the river’s edge under that Black Moon they be singin’ bout.

Take DNA from Alice Cooper, Motörhead, Danzig, Rob Zombie, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Powerman 5000 and the “Motor City Madman” Ted Nugent; combine in a vat and add pure undiluted carnal urge, and you have Beasto Blanco!

Beasto Blanco sets the tone of the album Live Fast Die Loud with an homage to Ted Nugent with their cover, the image of the classic “windmill” guitar stance in motion, and like the cover, the album is alive with the forward thrust of hard rockin’ fury.

Beasto Blanco was formed in 2012 by Vocalist Chuck Garric and Guitarist Chris Latham. They have created a group that allows them indulge their influences and imagery of their collective musical background and immortalize it in the studio and live on stage. Chuck Garric, from the mountains of Lake Tahoe, California and Chris Latham from Anchorage, Alaska, moved to Los Angeles California with a destiny to be respected and envied in the LA Hard Rock Scene.

beastoChuck Garric has spent a majority of his career touring and recording with some of the biggest acts in the business, most recently an ongoing position as the bass player with Alice Cooper. Chris Latham has spent the last few years as the lead guitar player and song writer for Paper Back Hero.

Beasto Blanco is Chuck Garric on Vocals, Guitar, Bass and Chris Latham on Lead Guitar and Back Ground Vocals. These two larger than life fiends of the scene are supported by the talents of Calico Cooper, Glen Sobel, Jonathan Mover and Tiffany Lowe. If this was not enough, add in the genius of producer Tommy Henriksen to bring this Metal Beast to life.

The line “Billion Dollar, Ultra Bright Crystal Scars!” just gives me shivers and makes me want to eat Raw Meat, That’s Damn Tasty Lyrics!

Songs on this album that I feel are destined for immortality, “Live Fast Die Loud”, an anthem of a generation obsessed with fast hard living and an insatiable need for pleasure. ”Breakdown” is a search for the indefinable, the unreachable the ultimate, In “Viva Las Vegas Nights”, well what happens in Vegas never stays put. “Motorqueen”, the kind of girl you bring home to meet your momma, if you want your momma to drop on the spot and “Freak”- Be Real or Be Gone! Finally, “No More Man”, a friend in need is a fiend indeed!

CRASHBRAKE – Europe’s Neon Knights

901208_345497555583629_1411109278_o

You have entered a post-apocalyptic world, evil lurks around every corner and fear has the distinct odor of death. Vandals and miscreants roam the streets in blood thirsty hoards, the occasional brain eating zombie is nothing compared to the living death that surrounds you. The world is barren of hope; the few still innocent need some sort of hero to be their salvation, maybe an army of warriors that will defend them. Who will be their salvation?

The Neon Knights, the Bulgarian Masters of Metal, CRASHBRAKE is the Hope of Salvation we seek!

1009367_635585336468815_1494898230_oThis is what I see as the image of CRASHBRAKE, a truly talented and charismatic group from Bulgaria. CRASHBRAKE founded in January 2011 by Asen Milushev on Drums, Ivan Vulkov-Vance as vocalist, Guitarist Alexander Stoikov and on the Bass Stoyan Georgiev – Tenko. CRASHBRAKE perform original music and their debut album comes out this month. When asked about their music, they were quoted “We try to keep everything with the band on a professional level. The people go to concerts not just to listen to music. They can do that at home. The stage show is important. With masks and costumes we feel right, with jeans and t-shirts is boring.” says Vance. Vance was not just waxing poetic, their stage shows are truly interesting and exotic, not often would one consider Bulgaria and the birthplace of Metal, however there is an awesome calling for new and innovative music in Europe, and CRASHBRAKE is there to lead the way. Their costumes resemble images of Futuristic Neon Knights, warriors or even Judge, Jury and Executioners of the future like Judge Dred.

With a strong following and a fan base that is International, CRASHBRAKE has the power to impress and entertain, I watched many of their videos on their YouTube page and it appears that the band has gone through many changes and transformations, always working on becoming the best at their image and sound, blinding fast guitar riffs and a drummer with impeccable timing, CRASHBRAKE is looking at a rise to glory that is to be admired. CRASHBRAKE is destined to be a well-known and respected group that will be recognized for their dedication to music.

CRASHBRAKE

“In the beginning, while having fun, we began mixing different genres of music that seemed incompatible till now. By doing so, we developed a new style, in which we sometimes go to extremes, without trying to overdo it. The basis for our music is a rhythmic hard metal with a lot of riffs, mixed with more calm and melodic moments. The vocals are ranging from hard screaming, to hip hop, often pop with modern effects. We love changing the tempo.”

“In some of our songs there is more of a certain style that helps us develop by playing different music. The lyrics are largely based on events in our lives, paraphrased and even enhanced in one way or another.”

“By performing our music live, we become heroes, and so reinforcing its meaning. Our image is very specific. It includes stage costumes and masks, the making and design of which is our own.”

Recently, CRASHBRAKE has enjoyed public acclaim and is a spotlighted feature act to perform upcoming performances in Bulgaria from September to December 2013 as stated in the Sofia Globe, a highly noted press agency in Europe – “The Sense of Rock festival on September 13, 14 and 15 brings together a range of Bulgarian rock and metal groups at the National Hippodrome in Bankya, just outside Sofia. Twenty-six groups are scheduled to play, including CRASHBRAKE, Vasko the Patch and the Poduyane Blues Band, Diana Express, Wartime, and the Barabi Blues Band. Tickets are available through ticketpro.com.”

While there are many bands trying to emulate the iconic artists that have use costumes or makeup in their stage performance, CRASHBRAKE has created a look that is their own. Their blue lighted armor is a sign of strength and power, which is supported by the amazing depth of the vocalist’s voice, dark and powerful metal but clear, and understandable verse. I have seen many a metal band with skill fall prey to their frailty and “stardom”, but I feel CRASHBRAKE has what it takes. If the future holds the image of desolation, and zombies do rise up to walk the earth, I would want CRASHBRAKE on my side of the fight.

Power Metal from Europe is strong within the mighty sound of CRASHBRAKE!

CD Review: And the light came blaring in….

andthelightcameblaringinCD Review: And the light came blaring in….

Artist: Keith Kenny

iNtu Records 2013

Available at Select Locations and Online at http://www.keithkenny.com/music

The singularly most relevant and history making artist on the 60’s and 70’s were the Guitarist Singer / Songwriters, modern bards that often mixed melodies and social / political diatribes together to awe and inspire the youth to think of their past, present and futures, bring about change and rise to stand against injustice. Today, in our media soaked worlds befuddled with overdriven digital enhanced information and pseudo soundtracks that seem to be forced into our ears and minds, choking our natural song and making us sound like pigeons in a park, we miss the true artists that are gems in the crowning achievements of the music world.

IMG_8905-e1369274470658Last year I met an artist at the NAMM Convention in Anaheim California, a young and energetic man who seemed to be unpacking a small suitcase on stage, only to see that the suitcase was turned into a percussion set, a small amp and he transformed into one of those old time movie one man bands you see in the old black and white comedies.

He stood up and to a small but growing crowd he introduced himself, with a crooked smile just under his mustache and a small twitch of his finger he began to entrance and get the crowd moving, swaying and swarming to the rhythms and cheering at every note.

I got to talk to him for a bit, exchanged emails and before I could turn around to talk to him, he vanished, out of sight and as if he was never there.

He appeared as if a ghost of Woodstock and darkened coffee clubs of yesteryear.

Recently I received a CD in the mail from Keith Kenny, his newest offering And the light came blaring in…. no letter enclosed, no request or special notes, just the CD. I put it on and I found myself whisked away to what seemed like a personal performance, a concert for one. I was reminded of artists like Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Richie Havens and other illuminated souls I have listened to.

And the light came blaring in…. is not his only work, he has actually performed in a multitude of venues and has 2 other albums, evil fuzz magic and Limit is the Sky which I listened to at his web site http://www.keithkenny.com , I will say that this new album is what appears to be the next transformation in what sounds like an audible journal and diary of a man’s life and growth in music. Keith Kenny is truly a modern day bard, weaving music and words into rich tapestries that imprint themselves into your mind and stay with you, bring back memories of your own life into focus, inspiring warmth of love and understanding of one’s self. I don’t know if this troubadour intended to be a modern day pied piper or if it comes naturally, but Keith Kenny is one to be heard.

I am especially fond of “Living in Circles”, the first track on this album; this is so down and reminiscent of the late great Jimi Hendrix, but lyrically so Lou Reed, it swirls and Builds into a stomp and then – Stops, leaving you wanting more, and with the song “Filling Holes”, I also feel like at time I have dug my own graves, only to leave them empty, hoping not to fall into the traps I have laid for myself.

The whole albums is riddled with heart pulling, brain freeing mind bombs of emotion and make this possibly the best solo performance album I have the pleasure of hearing this year. And at only seven tracks long, there is so much that is said in just a few smooth verses. The total track listings are “Living in Circles”, “Filling Holes”, “Question the Beat of My Heart”, “Dream”, “Awake”, “And the Light Came Blaring In”, “Carved in Stone”, “Love Will go the Distance”.

Keith Kenny

I feel Keith Kenny will make a strong impact on the music scene, without the glam and the glitz, but with a soul so strong it could part the sea and bring grass to the dessert. I am a new believer, and a faithful follower of the singer songwriter, the minstrel in the park, the singer in the dark, the one man band.

Keith Kenny

People, Hell and Angels: New Hendrix Release of Never before Published Studio Recordings out on March 5th 2013

Album Review: Jimi Hendrix - People, Hell and Angels on Sony Legacy Recordings

Review by Joseph Timmons- Xombiewoof Magazine

JimiLegacyPeopleLP

It is a standard in Rock Music, to know the work of one of the greatest musicians in Rock History, one who was legendary in his own lifetime, as well as every moment since he first walked out on stage. The legacy of Jimi Hendrix has never been forgotten nor will it ever be, but it has been our fortune that there are conservators of this recorded genius whom have found previously un-released studio and live performances of Jimi Hendrix and his entourage of lore, and have with the permission of his estate, are making these masterpieces of music available to us to listen to, enjoy and celebrate his life.

In the years between 1968 and his death in 1970, Jimi Hendrix embarked upon new experimentations in music, with his signature sound and his entire view on the creative processes that for him were as natural as breathing.

Jimi Hendrix set into the studio with the best known musicians of the day, all masters of their craft - Billy Cox, Buddy Miles, Stephen Stills, Jimmy Mayes, Hank Anderson, John Winfield, Larry Lee, Jerry Velez, Juma Sultan, Al Marks, Chris Grimes, James Booker, Lonnie Youngblood, Mitch Mitchell, Rocky Isaac and both Albert and Arthur Allen at sessions that would create masterpieces that are now, for the first time, on one album in their entirety.

Jimi Hendrix desired to develop new material and new departures in music with old friends and new ensembles and would create mini-super groups to record with. Working diligently to craft his next musical statement with others that saw his vision, these recordings encompass a variety of unique sounds and styles incorporating many musical elements − horns, keyboards, percussion and a second guitarist. People, Hell and Angels presents some of his finest creative work ever issued and provides a compelling window into his growth as a songwriter, musician and producer.

Jimi Hendrix personally oversaw the mastering process of the original recordings, working in new rhythms and progressions, the limitless creative talents of these musicians have recorded 12 truly unique songs that are deep in Rhythm & Blues, Soulful Expression and awe inspiring tones that enchant and hypnotize the listener, transporting them back in time to the heyday of the Modern Rock Movement that was the center of Jimi Hendrix’s life. This collection of studio tracks showcases the legendary guitarist working outside of the original Jimi Hendrix Experience trio.

Looking at his career with The Jimi Hendrix Experience, one would already know his music is fueled by emotion and energy, a truly honed skill that retained the rawness that was often mistaken for improvisation, an intoxication duality of harmonies and a mystifying allure of what was to next come from his restless soul. People, Hell and Angels is the answer, a collection of works that would be a new and ever enduring tribute to one who consistently broke his own achievements with every touch of a string.

At this point, I would normally start rattling off track titles, or say why I find them good or suggest that one was better than the rest. I find myself at a loss to do this with People, Hell and Angels, this album is not “one song after the other” but a winding road into the spirit of music the Jimi Hendrix and his fellow musicians, these spiritual travelers would weave into a web of star-stuff, that ensnares the listener, from funky, jazzy rhythms, to instrumental passages and heart breaking blues, this album is one long song with no one track being more or less significant than the rest.

Here is the Track Listing and some footnote facts I gathered at The Jimi Hendrix Website jimihendrix.com - People, Hell & Angels, - Track by Track Annotation:

Earth Blues:

Totally unlike the version first issued as part of Rainbow Bridge in 1971, this December 19, 1969 master take features just Hendrix, Billy Cox and Buddy Miles--stripped down funk at its very origin.

Somewhere:

This newly discovered gem was recorded in March 1968 and features Buddy Miles on drums and Stephen Stills on bass. Entirely different from any previous version fans have ever heard.

Hear My Train A Comin':

This superb recording was drawn from Jimi's first ever recording session with Billy Cox and Buddy Miles--the powerhouse rhythm section with whom he would later record the groundbreaking album Band of Gypsys.

Jimi shared a deep love for the blues with Billy Cox and Buddy Miles. Both musicians understood Jimi's desire to create what he described as a 'new type of blues'. Jimi's menacing lead guitar is the centerpiece of this dramatic addition to his remarkable legacy.

Bleeding Heart:

This Elmore James masterwork had long been a favorite of Jimi's. He had performed the song earlier that year with the Experience in concert at the Royal Albert Hall and had attempted to capture the song in New York studio sessions during the weeks that followed.

Recorded at the same May 1969 session as "Hear My Train a Coming," the track conveys Jimi's firm understanding of the arrangement and tempo he desired. Before they began, Jimi instructed Cox and Miles that he wanted to establish a totally different beat than the standard arrangement. He then kicked off this amazing rendition that was nothing like any other he had ever attempted.

Let Me Move You:

In March 1969, Jimi reached back to another old friend, saxophonist Lonnie Youngblood. Before he was discovered by Chas Chandler in the summer of 1966, Jimi had contributed guitar as a nondescript studio sideman for Youngblood and such infectious rhythm and blues styled singles such as "Soul Food".

This March 1969 session features Hendrix and Youngblood trading licks throughout this never before heard high velocity rock and soul classic.

Izabella:

In the aftermath of the Woodstock festival, Jimi gathered his new ensemble, Gypsy Sun & Rainbows, at the Hit Factory in August 1969 with engineer Eddie Kramer. "Izabella" had been one of the new songs the guitarist introduced at the Woodstock festival and Jimi was eager to perfect a studio version. This new version is markedly different from the Band of Gypsys 45 rpm single master issued by Reprise Records in 1970 and features Larry Lee, Jimi's old friend from the famed rhythm & blues 'chitin' circuit', on rhythm guitar.

Easy Blues:

An edited extract of this gorgeous, free flowing instrumental was briefly issued as part of the long-out-of-print 1981 album Nine to the Universe. Now nearly twice as long, the track offers fans the opportunity to enjoy the dramatic interplay between Jimi, second guitarist Larry Lee, Billy Cox and drummer Mitch Mitchell.

Crash Landing:

Perhaps known as the title song for the controversial 1975 album that featured Hendrix master recordings posthumously overdubbed by session musicians, this April 1969 original recording has never been heard before. Jimi is joined here by Billy Cox and drummer Rocky Isaac of the Cherry People to record this thinly veiled warning to his girlfriend Devon Wilson.

Inside Out:

Jimi was fascinated by the rhythm pattern that would ultimately take form as "Ezy Ryder". Joined here by Mitch Mitchell, Jimi recorded all of the bass and guitar parts for this fascinating song--including a dramatic lead guitar part amplified through a Leslie organ speaker.

Hey Gypsy Boy:

The roots of Jimi's majestic "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)" trace themselves to this March 1969 recording. Unlike the posthumously overdubbed version briefly issued as part of Midnight Lightning in 1975, this is original recording that features Jimi joined by Buddy Miles.

Mojo Man:

Jimi would lend a hand to Albert & Arthur Allen, the vocalists known as the Ghetto Fighters, whom he had befriended in Harlem long before he achieved fame with the Experience. When the two recorded this inspired, previously unreleased master at the legendary Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama they took it back to Hendrix at Electric Lady Studios. Jimi knew just what to do to elevate the recording beyond contemporary R & B to the new hybrid of rock, rhythm and blues he was celebrated for.

Villanova Junction Blues:

Long before his famous performance of this song at Woodstock, Jimi recorded this studio version with Billy Cox and Buddy Miles at the same May 1969 session which yielded "Hear My Train a Comin'" and "Bleeding Heart" also featured on this album. Never fully finished, the song stands as an example of the fertile ideas he hoped to harness and brings to fruition.

I will leave unto you the titles of these wonders for you to “Experience”, get this album and look into the heart of the storm that was the musical mind of Jimi Hendrix. The Album comes with linear notes and history of each recording session, assisting in putting you into the recording studio and feeling every note as it is played.

I am taking for granted that you will want this album, so I have included a link to the Jimi Hendrix.com Web Page for People, Hell and Angels, don’t miss an opportunity give witness to an unseen chapter in the life of Jimi Hendrix, a man who’s life ended too soon, a musician whom many saw as the embodiment of a generation that struggled to live, love and be at peace with itself but foremost, in People, Hell and Angels, a soul who still walks the earth, bringing his music to the masses. This landmark presentation is available on both CD and Archival Grade Vinyl. Pre-Order Today through the Jimi Hendrix Website.
