SSL Live HITs SUMMER FESTIVALS WITH The KILLERs

KennyKaiser-FOH-TheKillers

“This console is the most analogue-correct digital console; it sounds phenomenal”

Following The Killers’ wildly successful 2013 Battle Born world tour, performing in 50 countries and headlining arenas on six continents – including a sold-out Wembley Stadium show for which they wrote The Wembley Song – the Las Vegas-based phenomenon is back on the road this summer in support of their Direct Hits greatest hits compilation. With appearances at North American and U.K. music festivals, the band’s FOH engineer, Kenny Kaiser, is delivering their chart toppers with help from the new SSL Live console.

Kaiser works for Delicate Productions of Camarillo, California, serving as PA tech or system tech for Selena Gomez, Train and as monitor tech and crew chief for The Foo Fighters, among others. After moving to the Killers’ camp last year, he took over the helm for their 2014 tour. However, Kaiser was not fond of their previous FOH console and knew instantly that he’d need to make a switch.

“Delicate is a great partner of Hi-Tech Audio [supplier of the SSL Live console for the tour] in San Francisco, where I’m based,” he says. “Louis Adamo, president of Hi-Tech, called to say they had a new SSL console, so I went down and played with it. I found it fluid and the surface very intuitive. I also had a chance to take a class for engineers and production companies. After I took the class, I found the console even more intriguing. One thing that stuck in my mind was actually taking it apart and looking inside at how it’s made – it’s built like a tank. Plus, with the name SSL, you can’t go wrong; that’s a great name in consoles.”

As Kaiser is part of a new breed of engineers, The Killers’ previous mix platform just wasn’t his style. “There was too much button pushing to get to certain places and it was too spread out,” he continues. “There were fader banks on either side, so I had to do a lot of left and right movements. With Live, it’s more centralized. I don’t have to move around the console and I can stay in one spot, hit one button and quickly do what I need to do.”

Kaiser, who will occasionally use other consoles for events supported by Delicate, finds SSL Live to be more convenient to work on due to its flexibility and the manner in which an engineer can customize the fader banks. “It’s very intuitive and user-friendly,” he adds. “There are a lot of options as to how you can set up SSL Live.”

The accuracy of the console also stood out to Kaiser. “Because my background is a system tech, I’m an audio measurement and phase dork,” he explains. “Some engineers might have an eight or 10 dB boost or cut on an EQ band and my thought, if you have to do that, is that something is wrong – either the wrong mic or the console isn’t doing what the engineer needs. I now find that certain things I used to do, I don’t have to do anymore because the EQ does what it says its doing. When you’re on the first band and you want a cut at 120 Hz, it actually does 120. Some consoles say they’re doing 120, but then when you actually plug it in and check, it’s not quite there. Sometimes the Q isn’t quite what it says; with this console, it’s precise.”

Another big hit was Live’s onboard effects. “Everything is built-in, the reverbs sound glorious and it’s all on board,” says Kaiser. “I don’t have to go out and buy a console and then say, ‘Okay, now I need some external piece of software or hardware to get what I want.’ Everything I need is right there in one box to make the sound how I need to make it, which makes my job easier.”

But it doesn’t just stop at the effects, the console’s all-pass filters were also a big selling point for Kaiser. “As a system tech, I use all-pass filters to align side hangs to the mains,” he explains. “Being able to have that on inputs to align a pair of kick or snare drum mics is a huge tool to get the phase just right.”

Kaiser also mentions the clarity and distinctness that each instrument has in his mix. “On other consoles, once you start adding more stuff, you hear them start to overload and hear the coherence start to go away, but not with the SSL Live. SSL definitely did their homework to make it sound as analogue as possible. This console is the most analogue-correct digital console I’ve ever encountered. It sounds phenomenal.”

The Killers recently headlined the Hangout Festival on the sandy beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama where the console was put to the true test of the weather. Kaiser notes, “despite the heat, high humidity, wind and sandstorms that we encountered that weekend, the console was just great.”

Ear Trumpet Labs Introduces Mabel, Their First Multi-Pattern Studio Microphone

Ear Trumpet Labs

Handcrafted microphones with modern electronics and a vintage look

Mabel.angled.blackEar Trumpet Labs, a privately owned company in Portland OR that makes handcrafted microphones, today announced the release of Mabel, a new microphone designed specifically for studio work.

The Mabel, one of a full line of technologically innovative, visually stunning and a true example of form and function supporting imaginative design, will most definitely spark a new creativity to the studio professional as well as the home studio recording artist. All of the Ear Trumpet Labs microphones are favored by the “New Folk” Artists throughout the United States, and until recently was a most guarded secret.

Mabel is a hand-built multi-pattern condenser microphone utilizing two cardioid medium-large diaphragm (26mm) capsules, designed primarily for capturing demanding sources like acoustic instruments, drum overheads, and vocals. Recognized as “Microphones of Distinction”, and, in my opinion, I would say that Ear Trumpet Lab Microphones have a sought after sound and durability that outlast other microphones in their price ranges yet have no equal in their class.

Milk Carton Kids

Mabel.fontal.blackMabel features a unique copper-ringed head basket with brass grill work, held in a pivoting mount within a stainless-steel yoke, and a copper-and-brass body. The design is both visually stunning and extremely practical, as the pivoting head makes for easy positioning adjustments.

The capsules are a pair of fixed-cardioid electret condensers, individually tested and selected to match each other and strict design criteria. The circuit is a transformer-less FET with fully balanced output, incorporating thorough EMI protection.

Other electrical components in the signal path are of the highest quality: metal film resistors, polypropylene and polystyrene capacitors, and individually tested, hand-matched and biased transistors and JFETs. Internal Sorbothane shock and vibration damping helps to minimize vibration noise.

The dual-cardioid-capsule design is an uncommon approach to a multi-pattern microphone. It has advantages in an especially deep null at the sides of the figure 8 pattern and greater control over the directional frequency response across all the patterns. The circuit includes high frequency EQ tuned to the capsules, providing a very smooth high end.

Mabel.top.black.hiresSensitivity: 25 mv/Pa (cardioid) Output Impedance: 150 ohms

The Mabel is now available for $1000 directly from Ear Trumpet Labs.

Marshall Electronics - MXL Microphones: A Proven Sound Investment

MXL Cr-89 MicrophoneProduct Reviews of Marshall Electronics / MXL Cr-89 Low Noise Condenser Microphone and R150 Series Microphone.

We studio tested two of Marshall Electronics / MXL series microphones, the Cr-89 and the R150 and found that once again, Marshall Electronics has provided musicians and recording artists with audio recording equipment that has design elements of superior beauty and highly durable engineering that will stand up to years of use in the studio or on the road.

Both the Cr-89 and R150 have rugged solid metal construction, dent resistant grills and “screw-mount” supporting receptacle ends. Whether you choose to affix quick release cables or secure mount wirings, the MXL Cr-89 and R150 have a versatility that supports any recording environment. Both units come with shock mount supporting structures that come with additional elastics and mount to traditional upright or boom stands. The R150 comes with an MXL-56 High-Isolation Shockmount while the Cr-89 comes with a larger MXL Shockmount and an Aluminum Travel Case. Each of these MXL masterpieces of sound have the ability to be used in any and every application, whether in recording voice tracks, acoustic instrument or ambient room setups, both the Cr-89 and R150 will pick up the softest tones and accurately record amp driven sounds without overt distortion. We are aware your independent use may vary, but we put these microphones through every recording situation possible and found ourselves hard pressed to find anything wrong with these beauties other than we did not have more of them!

MXL Cr-89

The MXL Cr89 is a large diaphragm condenser microphone wrapped in contrasted design elements of black and chrome. The Cr89 has low noise circuitry and a very low proximity effect, making it ideal for up-close recording. At home on instruments and vocals, the Cr89's body design minimizes body resonance while the tuned grill cavity reduces standing waves and harmonic distortion. The Cr-89, Condenser pressure gradient microphone touts a large 32mm capsule, Gold-sputtered, 6 micron diaphragm and has a Frequency Response of 20 Hz—20kHz, requiring Phantom power 48V ± 4V considerations.

MXL R150 MicrophoneThe MXL R150 Ribbon Microphone incorporates a Figure-8 polar pattern and a 1.8 micron aluminum ribbon, the R150 offers breathtaking sound for vocal and instrument recordings. It is an excellent microphone for broadcast applications. The R150 also performs brilliantly on acoustic instruments, strings, and horns. It offers high SPL capability, outstanding side rejection and precise directivity. The R150 Ribbon Velocity Microphone supports a 1.8 micron aluminum ribbon of 47mm with a Frequency range of 20Hz -17kHz.

What does this mean to the studio artist of performer in the live stage arena? ... The difference between recording your music with the Cr-89 or the R150 or with their competitor’s equipment, is either laying tracks in a way that compliments and supports its genius, or having recordings that are missing the subtle nuances that can mean the difference between a masterpiece and an ”OK” song.

The Cr-89 is defined as a Top-quality condenser microphone for vocals and instruments. While being a vocalists dream, it is Ideal for acoustic guitars, strings, pianos and room sound. The Cr-89 is warm in character yet still faithful to the original source. The R150 Ribbon microphone delivers a dark, warm tone with a “mellow” sound. The R150, with it’s a rich midrange and a rolled-off top end, uses a Figure-8 polar pattern to capture both instruments and room sound yet is not “muddy” or “cluttered”. The R150 has a High SPL capability which is ideal for electric guitars, horns and percussion and has a very low proximity effect—great for up-close recording!

Marshall Electronics, known for their innovation and attention detail listens to its customers’ needs. In designing the MXL series of Microphones they proved the adage “You Get What You Pay For”, The R150 is available at retail for prices starting at 95.00 and the Cr-89 starts at 280.00 making them both incredible bargains for what they deliver. The prices we found were from many online and storefront operations and prices do vary, check with your local retailer.

Audiofly Headphones – The Wonders from Down Under

Audiofly_MarkAudio Equipment Review of the Audiofly Headphones Model AF45m

Joseph Timmons – Xombiewoof Magazine

The market for personal monitors and audio headphones is teaming with multiple brands, all promising the purest, most unique sound and quality one could imagine. I have done many reviews of similar equipment and I have to say only a few have made it from the start to finish without some form of disappointment.

The Audiofly Model AF45m Headphones are advertised on the company website as “Born out of obsession” and “delivers clear, honest tones. Well defined mids and groove with a punchy bass and blend with stunning highs that chime like a church bell.”

Well, the fact is ….the company does NOT do itself justice, the design quality of the AF45m is far superior than stated, the sound quality and richness of tone is better that some units that cost much more!

The AF45m has an average retail price through online carriers of between $40.00 and 60.00 US, depending where you shop, and come equipped with a microphone so you can use on your favorite personal audio device or smart phone, with a very cool color selection they are both utilitarian and stylish. Built to withstand punishment, they have the unadvertised ability to cancel exterior noise so your music enjoyment is equal to having your favorite artist perform solely for you at your whim. The highs were crisp, sharp and defined with a full range of mid tones and some of the deepest bass you could drop, tested on my smart phone, personal audio device and home stereo, every use was stunning.

I discovered new sounds and within the music collection I have enjoyed for years. When I put on my Blind Faith album, it was like hearing the music through new ears, richer tones, deeper drums and guitar chords that sang out like angels. I gathered other loves from my collection, spending hours listening to new music I have owned for years, I played Blues, Jazz and Hard Rock, the AF45m stood up to the challenge of every test I could imagine.

imageFor you “Tech-heads” out there, the Audiofly AF45m Headphones are designed with cutting edge technology in mind, Machined anodized alloy bezel with precision laser cut venting for acoustic optimization, elongated one piece thermoplastic housing that encases a custom voiced 11mm dynamic driver. It has a streamlined sound port to minimize sound eddies, the cable is their high spec Audioflex™ braided cable which is Kevlar reinforced for durability with a CORDURA fabric outer sheath. The earpieces have high grade silicon tips for custom fit and best possible comfort.

The Audiofly headphones series are destined to be the name in quality sound among those that value the quality of their music and want the best audio rich experience possible. The AF45 Series, as well as others in The Audiofly arsenal are perfect for the individual music lover, the studio and the professional musician.

Go to http://www.audiofly.com to see what products are available and go to their AF45m Page to see the design and specs yourself. PrimeVibe: New Technology That Makes Music Sound Natural Vintage

524891_578205615536868_2110222220_nNo industry has more innovation on a daily basis than the Music Industry, and whether it is in the recording studio or in live performance, it all begins with the Musical Instruments that are played. With this, there is a constant drive to find the purest sound an instrument can produce, and there have been some great flops as music is over sampled and over produce, yet there has been one innovation in recent years that is astounding, and it is named primeVibe.

A small family business based upon the vision of a musician with the foresight to see what could be rather than what was has created a device that uses sound waves to “prime” an instrument to create a softer and richer, more natural tone and sound. This device, known as primeVibe, can be used on your most favored instrument, or new instrument, giving it the warmth and tone that is unequaled by remixing or sampling.

our first endorser, Peter Czajer of Bohema

Ronny North

Artists ranging from unsigned to signed musicians such as International touring guitarist Peter Czajer of the group Bohemia to the legendary Californian Metal Guitarist Ronny North, endorse PrimeVibe with enthusiasm and complete trust. primeVibe is creating a new industry standard, and until now, has been a well-guarded secret, Xombiewoof Magazine has the “Tech-Specs” and the story of a technological vision become reality.

When relocating transducers on the instrument elevate them rather than drag or slide them.  Julian Fordham, PhD. in Materials Science at then-NXT (now Hi-Wave Technologies) was the team leader for PrimeVibe research and design.  Master Luthier Ryan Thorell consulted on the design and materials employed in PrimeVibe.

jim2Now, let’s talk with the visionary mind behind primeVibe, James Romeyn whom has the casual demeanor of a new best friend and would be referred to as simply “Jimbo”

Joseph Timmons: Jimbo, Thank you for taking time to work with us on this product article and for being such an interesting person to know.

Jimbo: Thank you for doing this article for us, we are happy to do this!

Q: What exactly is PrimeVibe, and how does it work?

Jimbo: “PrimeVibe warms up tone wood, it works on guitars, violins, bass guitars, harmonicas, drums, and ukes, just about any instrument made of wood except pianos, which are too big to service. The longer you play an instrument the warmer the tones. This is due to the seasoning of the tone wood. PrimeVibe seasons tone wood fast. Guitars take only 4 days to sound “vintage”.”

Q: Is this a “Family Based Business”, how big is your company?

Jimbo: “My wife, Debra, and I are the only full time workers at our UT location, so we are a “mom and pop” business. We take orders, provide customer service, package kits and ship them. We also handle promotions thru social media.”

“We also have sales people and a great webpage designer. Our sales reps are musicians. Our rep for Singapore, China and Thailand is a guitarist. Our distributor to Europe and Russia is a guitarist and plays violin and mandolin. And our webpage designer is a great bass guitarist! “

Q: Does the process cause any permanent changes to the structure of the Guitar or Instrument?

Jimbo: “No - We hired highly educated engineers to work on the primeVibe prototype. The transducers are harmless when properly used and the instruction manual clearly illustrates how to season various instruments. We also encourage our customers to contact us if they have any questions.”

Q: What was the initial idea for PrimeVibe, when did you begin?

Jimbo: “After searching for the “perfect” guitar for 3 years I ordered a custom guitar. It took the builder over 10 months to deliver it. I opened the case and saw that it was gorgeous. But when I strummed it, OH, Man! It sounded stiff, lacked dynamics, and the wood needed seasoning. “

“I had waited nearly four years for my guitar; I didn’t want to wait 6 more years for the wood to sound good! I found some light weight NXT transducers. They were interesting to me because unlike regular speakers which move air particles the NXT speakers pumped musical vibrations right into the wood so they turned my new acoustic guitar into a speaker box and music clearly played from my guitar.”

“The transducers worked, but they were not efficient and there were several issues that I felt I could eliminate with proper design. I knew I could tweak them for the specific application of seasoning tone wood so I called NXT and asked them if I could license their technology and incorporate my designs for this specific purpose. They sent a project manager, Martin Roberts to Utah from California. He, Debra and I went to Marie Calendar’s Restaurant in Salt Lake City and hashed out the initial details for what is now primeVibe. That meeting took place in March of 2010.”

1150326_641014905922605_1067953260_nQ: Jimbo, during our initial call, we discussed “Lignin”, is this a material in all wood based instruments, and how does it differ from instrument to instrument?

Jimbo: “Yes, I remember the discussion very clearly and it’s great that you understood everything right off the bat. Your readers could look at some wood and see that there are hard winter lines (thick) and soft summer lines (thin) in all wood. In between those lines is a plant substance called Lignin. When wood is not warmed or “seasoned” it sounds tight. Stressed Lignin is softened by musical vibration and warm wood sounds pleasant, engaging, and more harmonious to the ear. All tonewood has lignin and all tone wood sounds better the more it is excited by music.”

Q: Presuming there is a noticeable change in tone and texture of sound and is the effects long lasting or is regular treatments needed?

Jimbo: “It is long lasting, however, if a musician seasons an instrument and then puts it away for say a year he’ll want to re-season it because the wood, lignin will become tight without vibration. A store in Thailand sells primeVibe kits along with guitars to schools. Before concerts the music teachers prime the guitars. I think that if a musician has a gig and wants to make sure his instrument sounds extraordinarily good he should season it. Our first customer, Mr. Muir, is a professional musician playing in Hong Kong. He seasoned his main guitar, a Gibson Roy Schmeck Reissue played "two and a half hours per day" and he heard big improvements.”

Q: You had mentioned the origins of the technology as being from an old military concept, can you give us the details and was it difficult to convert to your products desired outcome?

Jimbo: “During the Cold War, spies used "bugs" (microphones) to listen to conversations. The US invented technology to thwart the eavesdropping. They invented highly specialized transducers that play louder when contacting a solid surface than exciting only the atmosphere (the normal job for regular loudspeakers). They attached the special transducers to the walls of hotel rooms and other places requiring privacy.  Music was pumped into the walls so the bugs picked up musical sound instead of conversations.”

“Later, NXT (now HiWave Technologies) refined their "bending wave" technology and were granted 375 international patents.  Now we use that same technology to “prime” tone wood!” “It was difficult to iron out the details and it took several months of planning, including consulting with local Master Luther Ryan Thorell.”

pV on Chad_s drumQ: I am a Drummer, and know nothing about Guitars, yet I was able to grasp the importance of this unit and what it offers. Given the scientific nature of PrimeVibe, have you come across anyone that just does not understand the concept?

Jimbo: “Yes - Our friends and family looked blankly at us when we told them about primeVibe. When we finally had the kits in our hands we rented an old mansion in Logan, UT near a large theater. We were hoping to create interest in PrimeVibe.

“The mansion had many rooms and we displayed primeVibe working on my guitars. Some friends and family went to the show and finally got excited about our PV kits. One nephew found an attic in the old place where the owners stored drums. He kept bringing us drums to prime. It was great! We primed every drum in the stash and put them back into the attic.”

Q: What are your personal experiences in Music, and was there a personal driving factor in your desire to create this revolutionary product that has impressed so many musicians?

Jimbo: “Thank you for asking this question. I play some guitar, mainly acoustic. I’m not a professional by any means but I’ll volunteer to play at a party or musical show, say at a school play or church music night. I love perfect sound. Over the years I’ve tried very hard to perfect reproduced music in friend's homes by building speakers and trying to match them with a "perfect" amp, pre-amp, musical source and room acoustic treatment.  I have always wanted music to sound as good as it possibly can.”

“My music and audio history goes back to my first guitar age 9, played in a grammar school band (Pall Bearers, perhaps you've not heard of them?), studied synthesizer with Dr. Patrick Gleeson one of the top two analog synthesizer musicians in the world at that time. I was an assistant engineer at Sausalito Record Plant, where I worked with Roy Buchanan, Tower of Power, and New Riders of the Purple Sage. I gave guitar lessons, etc.”

“I now make and sell a world-class five piece Distributed-EQ Bass Reflex Array (DEBRA subwoofer system) for home or studio named after my wife which can be found at the following Link- : http://jamesromeyn.com, and I co-designed a new two-piece loudspeaker system with Duke LeJeune based on my own Patent-Pending radiation pattern, found at http://www.audiocircle.com”

Q: Overall, what is your goal, to see your device used in all applications or performance by all musicians, or by a distinct few that want the best sound from their instrument?

Jimbo: “Our customers are musicians and luthiers and music store owners. Musicians buy kits because they care a great deal about their audience. Whether playing for a single person or thousands of people musicians who want to sound their absolute best will purchase a kit for their audience.”

primeVibe red“So we are excited about all our customers, a 16 year old music student excites us because he gets the concept. A hard rock guitarist excites us because Wow! He’s an awesome guitarist, a nice guy and loves his kit! A 55 year old guitarist from the UK excites us because our kit is priming a guitar in a little cottage in England! A huge music store in Thailand excites us because Wow! They are selling to schools! We are thrilled with all our customers! “

Q: Considering the artists that use and endorse PrimeVibe, do you feel that your dream has been realized, or do you feel you have a long way to go?

1234830_659407867416642_1948292003_nJimbo: “The answer is both. Our dream has been realized. When Peter from Bohema, a popular and award winning rock band in Poland, wrote us and said he wanted to endorse primeVibe we were speechless. We kept playing his You Tube videos and we just loved Peter. He writes great songs, he’s versatile, he’s professional and he’s a nice guy. He was our first endorser. Then more people contacted us, and when doors opened for us to contact musicians and people in the luthier industry, we did.”

“We are extremely happy with our endorsers and we believe we will likely have more endorsers in the future.”

Q: Where can our readers find PrimeVibe in either retail or online venues?

MXL Presents the CR77

image

The CR77 Live Stage Microphone made its debut at Summer NAMM to an overwhelmingly positive response. The black and chrome, vintage-style microphone turned heads at the Sam Ash Open Mic Night and at the MXL & MOGAMI Live Music Showcase.

The CR77 has an integrated windscreen to filter out plosives and background noise. The grill has smaller holes to eliminate feedback on stage, and a built-in shockmount reduces handling noise without hiding any of the mic's visual appeal.

The CR77 is slated for release at the first of the year, just in time for Winter NAMM!

Orange Amplification: their Legacy in Music History and New Webstore Services for Today

image

When Orange Amplification founder Cliff Cooper opened a music shop and recording studio in the summer of 1968, he never imagined that from this near-derelict premises in the heart of swinging London, a sound and a brand would emerge that would still be going strong more than forty years later. With innovative design concepts and a desire to create a new way to bring an artist’s sound alive to their fans and in the studio.

The tone and expertise that went into the development of the first Orange amps is legendary. Guitar luminaries like Peter Green and Paul Kossoff plugged into early prototypes at the Orange Shop, and their feedback was baked into the amp circuitry. In its earliest conception, as well as today, Orange has a unique sound that many have tried to copy but has never duplicated.

ledzep1 The Story of OrangeOrange took to heart guitar design legend Les Paul’s maxim that “people hear with their eyes”, and began producing heads and cabinets that once seen, could never be forgotten. All of Orange’s trademark design cues were there from the start: the vivid vinyl covering, the amp control hieroglyphics, and the regal crest, establishing a look that has set the standard for British amplifiers ever since.

As the sixties drew to a close, Orange amps began to be seen on stage with some of the biggest names in music. Fleetwood Mac were the first chart group to go Orange in late ‘68, taking the company’s first half-dozen 100 watt amps to America, and in 1969, Peter Green took the first 200 watt head on their spring tour with BB King. Pretty soon, the list of Orange converts began to fill up with names that still inspire legions of devoted fans today: Stevie Wonder, Jimmy Page, John Mayall, and even James Brown – the King of Soul himself – relied on Orange’s already famous tone.

The crunchy mid-range of Orange’s amps made them popular with blues-influenced rock bands like Led Zeppelin, Free, and even metal pioneers Black Sabbath. Sales exploded on the back of these influential endorsements, and with the release of the classic 80 & 120 watt OR amp, at one point Orange was even outselling Marshall.

After the electronic revolution of the 1980s, rock music was ready for a comeback, and Orange was waiting. Bands like Oasis and Travis went looking for the sounds they’d grown up with, and turned to Orange’s quintessentially British tone in their droves. Orange was back, and production ramped up on a new generation of amps that would propel the company into a new millennium.

Just as the leading lights of the 60s and 70s helped shape the Orange sound for their generation, in 1997, Noel Gallagher popped in to Orange HQ to lend a hand. Touring with U2 at the time, Noel wanted more sparkle and crunch out of his amp, and after plugging in and cranking every available dial up to ten, he showed the Orange team what he meant. Noel’s feedback was integral to the development of a new overdrive circuit for the OTR head, delivering crunch, sparkle, and sustain that has endured through the history on modern rock.

In 1998 the flagship AD series launched, which helped establish Orange back at the top of the amp tree. Quickly becoming a favorite with recording stars everywhere, the AD15 was Jimmy Page’s amp of choice on tour with the Black Crowes. Then in 1999, the AD15 became the first British amp to win an ‘Editor’s Pick’ award from US Guitar Player magazine.

Rock’s return to the top of the charts inspired a new wave of aspiring guitarists and with the launch of the affordable Crush in 2001, for the first time Orange was able to cater to beginners and guitarists of modest means at a truly affordable level. At the other end of the scale, Orange continued to add to its impressive list of acolytes, handling the tone requirements for everyone from Prince to Slipknot, from Madonna to the Arctic Monkeys.

During the course of the decade, Orange continued to innovate, adding new models to the product line such as the Rockerverb (favored by Jim Root of Slipknot, and Madonna’s guitarist Monte Pittman). Then, in 2006, a completely new concept in portable amplification was unveiled: the Tiny Terror. This little amp came with its own custom-made gig bag, and sold over ten thousand units in its first year. Guitarists were suddenly liberated by the ability to take studio standard amplification absolutely anywhere. From its successful launch, the Terror family has grown to include the Dual Terror, the Terror Bass, the Terror Combo and the Dark Terror to name but a few. On the back of these impressive sales, and even more impressive innovation, 2006 also saw Orange win its first Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

In 2008 Orange celebrated its 40th birthday, launching custom shop limited editions, and the Anniversary OR50 head. A year later, the company would celebrate its second Queen’s Award for Enterprise, firmly establishing Orange as one of Britain’s global success stories.

Recently at the NAMM conventions, the Orange displays have been abuzz with interest in existing product lines, support lines and accessories, as well as glimpses at new model prototypes. Orange has and continues to set trends and work diligently towards making the art of music and sound their primary goal from design to finished product.
