Lust Immortal and Forever Feisty

pl2

CD Review: Evil Monkey by Feisty Piranhas

Released in Posthumous Tribute to Peter Alex Lust III

Album Review by Joseph Timmons

Published by Mad Fish Productions and Available at www.thefeistypiranhas.com

A band is more than a group of guys or gals that travel around and play together, they are a unified spirit, bonded by a “musical blood” that flows through them. It is with this in mind, that when a band member passes from this realm, unexpectedly and oh so too young, we all mourn not just what they were, but what they could be.

63604_10150141500972586_3047683_nPeter Alex Lust III was young, energetic and a fighter to the core, no stranger to hardship and with a history of beating the medical odds, not only had he become a great musician and frontman to the Feisty Piranhas, Peter also majored in Political Science at California State University at Channel Islands, graduated with a Bachelor's Degree and began to prepare himself for Law School. So his untimely death in December of 2013 was devastating to his band mates, but none more than the drummer of the band, who had seen Peter through all of his days in the Feisty Piranhas, through all his trials and tribulations in life, whom from day one loved peter more than life itself, the drummer, his father, Peter Lust Jr.

165098_10150141506182586_95043_nSince the death of Peter the younger, his father has held the band together and has created their new tribute album, Evil Monkey in memory of his son and 2 DVDs of Live Performances that chronicles and sets the foundation for his son’s legacy in music. These releases have captured the very essence of his son and the wonderful music he brought forth to his many fans and the pride to his family’s hearts.

Evil Monkey by Feisty Piranhas is a collected work of songs recorded ad tracked just prior to Peter’s death, but not completed, his father and the band completed the album and has released it to the public on their website, all proceeds of the CD sales and the DVD sales will support The Music Foundation For The Memory of Peter Alex Lust III.

165730_10150141504967586_2859994_nThe new album was mastered at the famed Bernie Grundman in Hollywood. Though dubbed a “pop-punk, rock & reggae” band, they are much more; they have vibrancy and a mystique that is quite difficult to put into words.

With driving rhythm and a pinch of rebel angst, a hard edge and a balanced, finished sound that rivals artists of longer past, the Feisty Piranhas are formidable. Feisty Piranhas have been compared to bands like NOFX, Green Day, Rush, Pink Floyd and for good reason; they have that something special that makes their music both hypnotic an enduring. It is, I feel, for this reason that this album Evil Monkey, will be the greatest memory of Peter Alex Lust III that will be like his spirit, an eternal reminder of his life.

63195_10150141505217586_1679665_nTracks on this album that stand out the most is a difficult phrase to say since all the tracks are momentous in themselves and all together magnificent.

I am however especially fond of what I feel are the best of the best on Evil Monkey – the songs  “Changing the World”, “This Is Her”, “Armageddon”, ”Shenanigans” and “Show Me A Free Man And I’ll Show You A Fool”.

For all the power and energy in the music, it is also very haunting, knowing that this voice is singing to us from beyond, proving there is a heaven and that an afterlife may be filled with eternal joy if a person like Peter Alex Lust is there to prepare a place for us to stay.

157046_10150141502882586_7915453_nIt is said, that when we mourn ones passing, it is not because they are no longer on this earth with us, but because we are here without them, with your permission and with a tissue in hand, I will say to you, with this album you can hold back your tears for another day.

Peter is here with us, listening to him sing and play, “Changing the World”, one day at a time.

Jimi Hendrix: a Life to Experience

130909_hearmytrain_cover_0PBS to air American Masters: Hear My Train A Comin’ in conjunction with Sony Legacy’s Release of Jimi Hendrix Experience – Miami Pop Festival: a Double Shot of Rock History comes to life in sight and sound.

Article by Joseph Timmons: Xombiewoof Magazine

On November 5th, 2013 PBS will air a documentary on the brief but amazing life of one who is synonymous with the development of today’s Rock & Roll music culture. At a point in time that would be Jimi Hendrix’s 70th birthday, PBS and Sony Legacy pay tribute to Jimi’s life and his gift to humanity.

American Masters: Hear My Train A Comin’ shows from beginning to untimely end, a career in music that is the stuff of legend, with interviews by those who knew and loved Jimi personally, worked with him, and through it all saw him as a man destined for immortality.

A pioneering electric guitarist, Hendrix (Nov. 27, 1942 — Sept. 18, 1970) had only four years of mainstream exposure and recognition, but his influential music and riveting stage presence left an enduring legacy. Hear My Train A Comin’ traces the guitarist’s remarkable journey from his hardscrabble beginnings in Seattle, through his stint as a US Army paratrooper, unknown sideman to R&B stars such as Little Richard, Joey Dee and the Isley Brothers and his discovery and ultimate international stardom.

The film also features revealing glimpses into Jimi and his era from the three women closest to him: Linda Keith (the girlfriend who introduced Jimi to future manager Chas Chandler), Faye Pridgon (who befriended Hendrix in Harlem in the early 1960s) and Colette Mimram (one of the era’s most influential fashion trendsetters who provided inspiration for Hendrix’s signature look and created such memorable stage costumes as the beaded jacket Hendrix famously wore at Woodstock). The film details the meteoric rise of the Experience, the creation of his groundbreaking music, the building of Electric Lady Studios, his state-of-the-art recording facility in Greenwich Village and concludes with poignant footage from his final performance in Germany in September 1970, just 12 days before his death at age 27.

Janie Hendrix, Sister and President of Hendrix Experience LLC, an organization devoted and entrusted with the preservation of Jimi Hendrix archives and his enduring legacy was quoted “American Masters: Hear My Train A Comin’ is an in-depth look at the life and legacy of Jimi Hendrix with his own words” she went on to say “His Impression on the world through his genius, music and talent continue to magically touch the lives of ensuing generations”.

130909_miamipop_coverIn addition to the ground breaking documentary, a Sony Legacy recording is releasing rare audio recordings of his performance at the Miami Pop Festival. In May of 1968, the Miami Pop Festival, the first event promoted by Michael Lang, who would go on to organize the first Woodstock fifteen months later, was to be the first recordings of Jimi playing live at the first ever major concert festival on the east coast. Michael Lang and Ric O’Barry, Inspired by the Monterey Pop Festival of 1967, where Jimi Hendrix, lit fire to his Guitar during his US debut, contracted Jimi Hendrix for this 2 day festival that would take Jimi Hendrix into the hearts of millions.

Performing, at the time his newest material, which are now standards in every artist play list, “Hey Joe”, “Fire”, “Foxy Lady”, “Tax Free”, “Purple Haze”, Red House”, “Hear My Train A Comin’” and more, this album takes you back in time when Hendrix first stepped onto the US stages and into our hearts.

Jimi Hendrix Experience – Miami Pop Festival will be available for purchase on November 5th, 2013, the same day PBS will air American Masters: Hear My Train A Comin’ and is expected to be the most viewed documentary of a Musicians life, the organization and dedication to detail of this presentation, and the quality of the audio on the album is magnificent and will entertain, educate and enlighten all that witness the life of Jimi Hendrix.

Jimi Hendrix: Jimi Plays Berkley

Jimi-Hendrix-Plays-BerkeleyRare Video and Audio from Berkley Community Theatre Performance May 30th, 1970

DVD / Blu-Ray Video Released by Experience Hendrix / Legacy

Street Release Date: July 10th, 2012

Review by Joseph Timmons – Xombiewoof.Com Magazine

Writer’s Note: this review will cover the DVD / Blu-Ray documentary and performance video Jimi Plays Berkley and the upcoming audio presentation of The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live at Berkley. This article will touch on another upcoming release West Coast Seattle Boy – Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child which will be a 2 hour documentary covering the history and life of one of America’s greatest Rock and Roll legends and founding father.

hendrixjimi_playsberkeleyOf all the movies, documentaries and video examinations music’s evolution in the 60’s and 70’s, we learned or are reminded of the social and political events shaping the environments that invoked the creative genius of the artists in that period of time. One such artist that is persistently mentioned is Jimi Hendrix, an artist that had a short but brilliant time on this earth and shined like a thousand suns, drawing to him those that understood his vision of music and heard the message in his words. The musical styling of Jimi Hendrix were completely original from his method of writing and performing to the way he played his guitar. Jimi played with an enthusiasm that was of the moment, a way that froze in the air and captured no only his music but the events of the time.

The social / political turmoil’s that were the foundation of civil rights movement, the anti-war movement, the times of protest and social change, all were heard in his soundscapes. Born in November of 1942, who would believe that one bright eyed child would be the bard of an era. Remembered for the unique performance of this nation’s anthem, The Star Spangled Banner, which encompasses the sounds of conflict and the sentiment of a nation’s internal struggles, we often decline to acknowledge his other grand accomplishments.

Jimi Plays Berkley is made from digitally restored 16mm film footage and has additional, previously unseen footage. Billed as a Documentary, this performance video is in 5.1 surround sound, mixed by Jimi’s engineer Edie Kramer and includes commentary from Abe Jacob, the original audio engineer who recorded the concerts in 1970. This movie contains not only Jimi Hendrix’s thrilling on stage performance, but is intertwined with footage of what was going on in the streets outside the concert hall at the same time, protest lines, citizen and police conflicts, people trying to force their way into the concert hall to see the master play and those that would use this event to make their statement, on both sides of the street. The hippies and “the man” taking their conflict and struggles to the city streets, while in the hall, a perfect silence of the masses, the only sounds were that of Hendrix and his band making music that would be forever remembered and become inspirational for all that attended. Jimi had made a statement “forget about yesterday or tomorrow, this is our own little world tonight”, this one small quote would be his legacy statement, to live for the now and to live….. Period, live and let live, be free within the world and yourself, to live and love.

Jimi Plays Berkeley the Second Set

The video presentation is of the 1st set from the Berkley performances, the 2nd set from the presentation is the audio recordings, both on CD and Vinyl, entitled Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live from Berkley, is an audiophile’s dream, a compilation of songs that examine every nuance of a spectacular performance, for those that were there, this will be a memory worth reliving and to new Hendrix fans, a new and exciting look into the magic that was Jimi Hendrix.

The 3rd and possibly most informative portion of this Hendrix collection is West Coast Seattle Boy – Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child, directed by Bob Smeaton, which features a rich soundtrack of Jimi Hendrix’s classics, interviews and monologs. A life in Jimi’s own voice, originally included in a boxed set of Jimi’s recordings, is an autobiographical journey into the artist’s life. Portions of this movie include linear notes, letters and diary entries read by Parliament- Funkadelic’s Bootsy Collins, who by nature has a vocal texture that is similar to Jimi Hendrix’s voice which lends and eerie value to the monologues, like Jimi reaching out to us from the afterlife.

With so many lost tapes, recordings and sessions seeing the light of day, we are learning more and more about the artists that shaped our lives through music, and we are re-examining our own sense of what their music meant and still means to us. Jimi Hendrix was and still is one of the most innovative artists of his or any era, and even though his time on this world was far too short, his legacy of music and social / political influence lives on, to be enjoyed by all that desire to live the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

The songs performed on this amazing new video Jimi Plays Berkley are: mank_jimi_0

· Johnny B. Goode

· Hear My Train A Comin’

· Star Spangled Banner

· Purple Haze

· Hey baby (New Rising Sun)

· Lover Man

· I Don’t Live Today

This is not just a movie, or a collection of songs, or a documentary, it is a tribute to the life of a man who was, and still is an example of what the Peace and Love generation was all about. Rest in Peace Mr. Hendrix, your Music still means something, as so does your life and all the lives shaped by your time on this world.

MEET RECORD STORE DAY 2012'S AMBASSADOR: IGGY POP

ANNUAL EVENT FOR INDEPENDENT RECORD STORES WORLDWIDE IS SATURDAY, APRIL 21st

VINYLMANIA: When Life Runs At 33 Revolutions Per Minute, a film by Paolo Campana, chosen as the Official Film of Record Store Day 2012

Record Store Day, the annual event in support of independent record stores the world over, is proud to announce the appointment of Iggy Pop to the post of Record Store Day 2012 Ambassador!

Of course, there is a lot to say about the upcoming event, set this year for Saturday, April 21st, but who better to extoll the virtues of our "holiday" than our Ambassador.

So, ladies and gentlemen, we give you Iggy Pop

A person should have a personality. You won't get one dicking around on a computer. It helps to go somewhere where there are other persons. Persons who are interested in something you are. That's how a record store or any shop that's got some life to it should work.

imageIt's not about selling shit. I got my name, my musical education and my personality all from working at a record store during my tender years. Small indie shops have always been a mix of theater and laboratory. In the 50's and 60's the teen kids used to gather after school at these places to listen free to the latest singles and see if they liked the beat. You could buy the disc you liked for 79 cents and if you were lucky meet a chick. Clerks in these places became managers, (like Brian Epstein), label heads, (Jack Holzman) and Faces on album covers (like me). Personally I feel best in a store that, while staying small and socially relaxed, still keeps a complete variety of music types and non musical recordings on offer. I'm aware though that a lot of great places are genre-specific, like dance hall shops in Jamaica or Compas here in Little Haiti. In Europe and on the West coast the same goes on for Punk and Goth. All of this is cool and has a much bigger future than most people realize today. When the record and record store businesses began to die at the turn of the new century, they deserved it because they got too big too boring and too plastic.

As Record Store Day Ambassador for 2012 I feel like a representative from some exotic jungle full of life and death and sex and anger, called upon to wear a leopard skin and translate joy to the world of the dead.

Record Store Day is also proud to announce their selection of VINYLMANIA: When Life Runs At 33 Revolutions Per Minute, a film by Paolo Campana (75", 2011) as the Official Film of Record Store Day 2012. Produced by Stefilm in coproduction with Lato Sensu and ZDF in collaboration with ARTE, Vinylmania is a tour through the grooves of an object that has never lost its soul, investigating what makes it so legendary in a world dominated by liquid music: Nostalgia? Possession?

The search for an identity - Vinylmania: When Life Runs at 33 Revolutions Per Minute is currently scheduled to play at the FIPATEL and Berlinale markets, and details on Festival and other screenings are being confirmed.

The FIFTH day-long celebration of the culture of the record store happens on Record Store Day, April 21, 2012. More details, on events, performances, screenings and releases are forthcoming. The Record Store Day website is www.recordstoreday.com .

Record Store Day is managed by the Music Monitor Network and is organized in partnership with the Alliance of Independent Media Stores (AIMS), the Coalition of Independent Music Stores (CIMS) and celebrates the culture of independent record stores by playing host to in-store events/performances, signings and special product releases on a global scale.

Record Store Day takes place annually on the third Saturday of April.

Record Store Day Sponsors:

Crosley Radio, EMI Distribution, Fontana Distribution, Furnace MFG, NARM, RED Distribution, Sony Music, Universal Music Distribution, Vivendi Entertainment, WEA Distribution, and Warner Bros. Records.
