Legacy Recordings Release Elvis: “That's The Way It Is” (Deluxe Edition),

elvis

SONY/RCA/Legacy Recordings Announce the Release of Monumental Definitive Edition of Elvis: That's The Way It Is (Deluxe Edition), the King’s 1970 Album & Concert Documentary, Presented Together for the First Time Ever in a Deluxe Box Set (8CD/2DVD).

That’s The Way It Is (Deluxe Edition) Includes Expanded Version of Original LP, Six Complete Shows from Elvis’ Electrifying Summer of ’70 Las Vegas Season.

Rare and Insightful Rehearsals, the 1970 Theatrical Edit AND the 2001 Special Edition of “Elvis: That’s The Way It Is,” 80-Page Booklet featuring Rare Photographs, Memorabilia and Recording Data.

In 1970, Elvis Presley fans were thrilled by the arrival of two cultural milestones: one an album, the other a full-length concert/documentary and each of them called Elvis: That’s The Way It Is. Since then, aficionados of Elvis have been clamoring for a package that included both the album and the film.

On Tuesday, August 5, 2014, Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release That’s The Way It Is (Deluxe Edition), the most ambitious Elvis Presley restoration package ever created, bringing together—for the first time ever--the album, the theatrical and home video versions of the film, six full-length concerts (featuring previously unreleased performances), rehearsal highlights and other rare recordings in one astounding and essential package.  The result of an historic partnership between Sony Music and Warner Brothers Home Video, the deluxe set combines the video and audio assets of Elvis: That’s The Way It Is with unique and previously unreleased material.

A highly-collectible 8CD/2DVD box set, That’s The Way It Is (Deluxe Edition), marks the first time the 1970 documentary and album have been available in a single package, with bonuses including unreleased material, remixed and remastered audio and a new 80-page book detailing the entire event with facts, songwriter and musician interviews, and photos in a deluxe 8CD/2DVD box set. A 2CD Legacy Edition of Elvis: That's The Way It Is will also be available.  Elvis: That’s The Way It Is (Deluxe Edition) is available for pre-order now on Amazon.com.

Originally released on RCA Records in November 1970, Elvis: That's The Way It Is combined eight studio tracks, recorded in Nashville, and four live concert performances recorded in Las Vegas during Presley's 1970 "Summer Festival" season at The International Hotel in Las Vegas to create what the All Music Guide has called "…one of his best…" and "essential listening for Elvis fans, both die-hard and casual."

Though never considered a soundtrack album, Elvis: That's The Way It Is was initially released to accompany the first theatrical run of "Elvis: That's The Way It Is," a 1970 documentary feature, directed by Denis Sanders, which combined on-stage, off-stage and behind-the-scenes footage in Presley's first non-dramatic film since his 1956 Hollywood movie debut. In the documentary, Sanders captured and illuminated a pivotal moment in Elvis' transformation from teen idol to consummate showman, Memphis meets Vegas via Hollywood, the King's return to full concert performances after years of film stardom.

Elvis Presley had made a dramatic comeback two years prior to these shows in a transcendent NBC-TV special, which aired in December 1968. The International Hotel, then-newly-built and the largest live venue in Las Vegas, booked Presley for an unprecedented 57 show run in July 1969, a four-week-long residency that would raise the bar and set the standard for superstar entertainment in Vegas and beyond. "There are several unbelievable things about Elvis, but the most incredible is his staying power in a world where meteoric careers fade like shooting stars,” Newsweek wrote of his incredible new approach to live performance at the time, while Rolling Stone lauded Elvis as “supernatural--his own resurrection.”

Early in 1970, Elvis returned to Vegas for a second engagement at the International, with RCA recording songs for the then forthcoming On Stage, February 1970.  Elvis was on a roll and making big plans--including a feature film--surrounding what would be his third Las Vegas engagement, scheduled for the summer of 1970

On June 4, 1970, Elvis arrived at RCA's Studio B in Nashville, where producer Felton Jarvis had assembled a hot new session band featuring Elvis' on-stage guitar legend James Burton. Five nights of recording generated material for no less than three future albums and four singles, including Elvis: That's The Way It Is and the essential Elvis Country album.

On July 14, rehearsals for the movie and live shows commenced at the MGM lot in Culver City, California. The Hollywood cameras rolled for five different rehearsals prior to the opening night on August 10, including augmentation run-throughs with the singers and the orchestra at the hotel. Unquestionably, Elvis was keen to broaden his repertoire for the film, as more than 60 songs were attempted during the period, far more than the usual average of 20 to 25 that would normally be chosen. Over the four nights filmed by MGM, Elvis and his band worked tirelessly, trying out a broad variety of musical styles, emphasizing his desire to share the wide range of music he loved with his audience. Director Denis Sanders captured the end result magnificently, providing fans throughout the world with their first glimpse of the new contemporary Elvis performing at the peak of his vocal prowess both in rehearsal and on the stage.

That's The Way It Is (Deluxe Edition) centers on the six complete shows recorded and partially filmed by MGM.  Two of the shows are released for the first time in their entirety; two more have only been available only through the mail-order Elvis fan-club network. The original RCA album is expanded with the four single sides from the period, and a selection of “fly-on-the-wall” outtakes from the June Nashville sessions that produced the majority of tracks for the album. Completing the audio section, a separate disc of insightful rehearsal highlights, featuring unusual song selections showcases both the hard work and the playful atmosphere that governed Elvis’ relationship with his musicians.

The original Elvis: That's The Way It Is includes fiery renditions of “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me,” previously a hit for Dusty Springfield; “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin,’” made famous by The Righteous Brothers, and a show-stopping rendition of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” The original album and singles will fill Disc One of the new edition, with six CDs worth of concert performances and one of rehearsal takes from the Summer of '70 International Hotel residency.

That's The Way It Is (Deluxe Edition) puts the original RCA album and the 1970 MGM documentary feature together in a single package for the first time. It includes both the original theatrical DVD version (1970) and the re-edited and extended DVD version from 2000.

Let’s make this clear, up front: These guys aren’t pretty.

10372259_4152066895377_4907038849017198681_n

Now, I’m not talking about their mugs, I’m talking about what they deliver. And the beauty of this ugliness is not only do they make a point to let the listener know that it’s ugly, they do it with such style that, whether they mean to or not, they can’t hide their grace.

Though there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of originality, as their obvious influences are collaged throughout the project (even down to the mascot that looks dangerously close to Motorhead’s “Snaggletooth”), but there’s some serious skill in this outfit and that’s the ink in their signature.

Donahue and Tong are solid, titanic shredders. The blend, compliment, and compound as a single unit, which is a skill most dual-axed acts don’t follow. They’re able to pull off innovative, driving chord progressions and riffs as if it were no different than lifting a beer. The solos, for the most part, sing with distinction and unpretentious flair. (At least to say, if they’re sweating, you can’t smell it).

Skimmerhorn, of course, most notably recognized as the bass ace of 1990’s, and newly sorta-kinda-not-really reformed, Chastain not only lets his fingers do the flying, but takes the helm as frontman, as well. Now, though his vocal “hit or miss” abilities range anywhere from gruff to tough, sweet and sour, and sounds like Hetfield to something unrecognizably kind of special, there is no doubt his 4-string skills easily rank in the top 5 with the best of them – and I mean that.
Harris, Lee, Burton, Blasko, Skimmerhorn, seriously.

However, no doubt it’s a little difficult to shine on that dirty diamond when the Godmother of Metal, Leather Leone, is rolling in the thunder and David T. Chastain is calling out for lightning. But, Skimmerhorn weathers the storm, nonetheless, with great strength. Though The Mighty Swine aren’t porkin’ around (yes, with a name like that, they deserve to be pun-ished), his part is undercooked, which I blame on the production. However, the few times he pulls through (yup, that’s another pun), most notably in the deviantly introspective, “Tomorrow,” and the punch in the throat, old-school “Empty Shell,” it’s like a tap on the vein.

Regardless of how the immensely tuxedo talented the outfit tries to hide under their old leather, the crown of glory on this project belongs to Rory Faciane. His “tap-dancing demon” style is a vicious onslaught throughout. Tribal and daring, hard and evil, this man can play to splinter your ribcage. There are moments when he overpowers, (which again, I blame on production), but the boys still hold their own. He’s a force to be reckoned with, pushing the pounding with a resounding, “I’m sorry, did that hurt? Good!!”

Yet all of this poetry is downplayed through composition. They make no pretensions here. There are no crafty over-zealous time changes or transitions – just a few here and there to keep things interesting, and some nice structuring demonstrated in “All That Is Evil,” and the well-crafted, “Thick as Thieves,” even with some deep harmonies appropriately scattered throughout. But for the most part, it’s straight “driving on black sunshine” cuts performed by over-qualified musicians. Good stuff! “Last Man Standing,” the first release and title track is clearly the “fuck you” of the project, very befitting to the album’s arsenic milkshake demeanor.

Regarding Skimmerhorn’s vocals in the mix, on the credit side, his malleable approach seem to fit the tone of each song appropriately, even demonstrating vibrato on occasion, so you know the abilities are there. He was even able to pull off the Judas Priest classic, “Hell Bent For Leather,” a nice treat included on the songlist, and take it for his own, very wisely not even trying to sound like the Metal God, which would probably implode a lung.

On the debit side, sometimes there’s no distinction between him and James Hetfield or no distinction at all. Yet, being that as it may, if Swine was going for a Grammy, then this would be a problem. “Last Man” is very clearly is going for itself, which makes it a welcome novelty among cover, tributes, and copycat bands. “Pool of Emptiness,” and “Two Graves” stand out as some of the better quality productions, even though there is a very distinctive touch of Black Sabbath in the mix, whereas “Rite of Passage” is very distinctive with a whole fistful of Sabbath.

Overall, it’s a nice job here and well worth a place in your collection. They show just enough elegance to prove themselves, but it’s pretty clear that The Mighty Swine are not the “other white meat.”

DESERT DRAGON TO ROCK THE ROOF OFF DOWNTOWN GRAND HOTEL

VIVA LAS VEGAS!: DESERT DRAGON TO ROCK THE ROOF OFF DOWNTOWN GRAND HOTEL & CASINO /SATURDAY, MAY 17TH

(LAS VEGAS, NV) - Just as U2 did at Rockefeller Center during their recent Tonight Show appearance, L.A. band Desert Dragon will rock the roof off the Downtown Grand Las Vegas during the hot quintet's upcoming show there, Saturday, May 17, 2014. 10:45 p.m.-11:45 p.m. Free. Info: (855) 384-7263 or https://www.facebook.com/DowntownGrandLV.

Known for their fiery live shows (no pun intended!), Desert Dragon recently took to the road for a six-city SXSW Tour that included a date at Shakespeare's Pub in Austin, TX. KESHA keyboardist Jenna Stone joined Desert Dragon for the tour.

In January Desert Dragon recently performed with iconic rock band Blue Oyster Cult at The Canyon Club, to great reviews. Vintage Rock's James Shelley wrote, "before I get started on BOC's performance I must shout from the mountain about the opening band, Desert Dragon. In a word, dynamite! These guys rocked! They definitely have the old school sound: heavy on guitars, thick bass lines, dynamic percussion, keyboards and great vocals. Percussionist Nicholas Mason held everything together. No fancy moves, just solid rock drumming. Singer Ross Petraca demonstrated a set of pipes that, head to head, would compete with a list of established vocalists, some having been around for greater than fifty years."

National publication Music Connection opined, "(Desert Dragon's) rhythm section is tight...Double-duty DeCario plays deep, sludgy grooves on the bass and atmospheric synthesizers, one of the highlights of the set...the twin guitar attack of Greg Patnode (who also wrote "Darkness Shines") and Thiago Straioto show the kind of balance expected from Judas Priest's K.K. Downing and Glen Tipton, if not with harmonized solos, then definitely with their distinct styles. Lead singer Ross Petraca has some quality pipes."

In a just-published review, the L.A. Music Examiner calls Desert Dragon's recent EP release Desolation, "Miles Away from the competition." Writer Will Phoenix goes on to say, "Darkness Shines" is an energetic introduction to their signature sound..."Miles Away" is yet another song that works well live...every band needs a song like closing cut "Bring Back The Life." Check one, two... The King is in the building

Dulamite_mfu-53CopyMany have called themselves “The King” and even we as society have given artist and entertainment figures this title. There's been The King of New York, The King of Queens, The King of Pop yes, Even “The King” himself Elvis. These titles may have been with or without merit in one’s eyes but what would those who have been given this title really feel about it if they truly know what the responsibilities were beforehand.

BlinkShow TV had the opportunity to speak with this up and coming artist about what's it like to be a “King” in the making? What King are we referring to..? Well, Dula – Mite, his rap name, is calling himself, nothing short of being, The King of Las Vegas.

We sit down with Abdullah Al-Amin in 2010 in a studio that he regularly records in. He had finished a recording session minutes earlier and we were then invited to go behind the scenes and get an in depth interview with the self-proclaimed “The King of Las Vegas” rap artist. He, a producer, and his own camera guy were the only staff members still in the studio that late night.

As we began to sit up our equipment, I said to myself, “Well, he is off to a good start, because he is still here late in the studio working, hard!” I would assume he would be in the streets, running around and doing everything other than protecting his title.

From the beginning, based on appearances alone, you would not understand how “Dula” would call himself King. He doesn't look like a traditional King. A King that would wear a symbol of his authority on his back and head. Or, one that has graced the planet with his concerts and millions of record sells. No. This King doesn't have those accomplishments, Yet!

So, what kind of King is this? Well, Abdullah Al-Amin, in his early 20's, has taken on a task larger than his title. In my opinion, I think he has organically taken on a new way to help Las Vegas' underground rap scene understand why there is the controversy and major disconnect from artist and why possibly Vegas' entertainers are not able to show their unity...
