THE WALL SINGLES BOX PREVIEWS TRACKS FROM NEWLY REMASTERED VERSION OF THE CLASSIC ALBUM
LEGENDARY PHOTOGRAPHER MICK ROCK RELEASES SYD BARRETT OCTOPUS PHOTO BOOK AND 7" SINGLE PACKAGE
IN-STORE GALLERY EVENT WITH ROCK AT VINTAGE VINYL IN FORDS, NJ SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 26TH
Among other amazing pieces to be made available to indie stores in celebration of 'Back to Black Friday', Record Store Day celebrates the classic Pink Floyd opus The Wall with the exclusive Capitol Records/EMI release of The Wall Singles Box. The set, on sale at participating indie record stores worldwide on Friday, November 25th, will be the very first time fans can hear tracks from a newly remastered version of the classic album, which has a full release scheduled in February 2012.
The Wall Singles Box will feature three vinyl 7" singles--"Another Brick In The Wall"/"One Of My Turns"; "Comfortably Numb"/"Hey You"; and "Run Like Hell"/"Don't Leave Me Now"-- and the artwork will be the iconic logo of the album.
On an exciting related note, Black Friday also sees the release of Syd Barrett Octopus, a book of photos from the legendary photographer Mick Rock, ("The Man Who Shot The Seventies") of his friend Syd Barrett, the tortured and enigmatic mastermind of early Pink Floyd. A special tin encasement will hold both the book and a vinyl 7" of "Octopus"/"Golden Hair," the first two songs on Side Two of Barrett's classic, The Madcap Laughs, for which Rock created the album cover.
Rock says, "I'm excited about the release of this special collector's tin of my dear friend Syd Barrett. If it hadn't been for Syd, who was my first classic subject when I was 19 year's old, I might not have become a photographer. I was inspired by my 'Madcap' sessions. That's what truly opened my eyes to the magic frame of the photographic image and I never looked back. I love the look and feel of the tin [there are also Bowie, Iggy and 'Glam' tins to complete the collection]. It's just a terrific new way to make my images available to discerning fans and also to provide the old school thrill of having vinyl in hand."
To launch Syd Barrett Octopus, Mick Rock will be appearing at an in-store gallery event on Saturday, November 26th (the day after Black
Friday) at 4pm at Vintage Vinyl in Fords, NJ. "In a world where the big record chains have ground to a halt, it's the independent stores who keep the fires burning for serious collectors who appreciate not just the music but also unique packaging," Rock says. "Buying on the internet just can't compete with the magical feel of instant gratification that a store purchase can provide. That's still my favorite way of accessing music that tingles my ears!!"
Black Friday is organized by Record Store Day, a cooperative project of hundreds of independent record stores in the USA, Canada, the UK, France, Germany and Holland. This year's Record Store Day saw the largest vinyl sales day in Soundscan history and lifted sales for the entire music industry. Organizers hope that "Back to Black Friday"
will follow the "bigger-than-Christmas" success of their annual April event.
Most of the special releases are being issued as vinyl records -- hence the "Back to Black Friday" name. The vinyl format has experienced a huge surge in popularity in recent years, spearheaded almost entirely by independent stores.
