swellers coverThe Light Under Closed Doors, the latest album by The Swellers to be released by No Sleep Records on October 29th is the proof that Indie Labels have the right stuff when selecting bands we need to hear. The Swellers, Flint Michigan’s highly revered punk rock band has created provocative lyrics that are full or sardonic wit and just the right amount of angst.

Produced by The Swellers and recorded in joint efforts of the group, Marc Hudson and Mark Michalik, The Light Under Closed Doors is a being touted as “a punk rock sing-along, filled with driving rhythm and infectious choruses”, this being said, I found it to be that and more. The band has an honest sound in their lyrics and compositions, keeping to the bland of modern punk and alternative “unfinished” tones, the songs are actually highly complex and rich with emotion.

When asked, the drummer Jonathan Diener said "This record feels a lot different than anything we've done, the way the songs were written, the way it was recorded, even the artwork all have this organic feeling about them. We went back to basics and let the songs and emotion do the talking for us."

After several albums and years of label changes, The Swellers connected with No Sleep Records to create and album with high energy, thoughtful and driving songs with titles “Should,” “Becoming Self-Aware,” “High/Low” and “Big Hearts,”. The Swellers “look to speak directly to fans with an open heart about growing up, learning from your mistakes and moving forward, something the band has a lot of experience with lately”. The Light Under Closed Doors is that glimmer of hope, that moment when even though life seems low, it will be okay. When thinking of “punk” most don’t realize it’s not always about anarchy or revolution, but the harsh look one must take when faced with their own reflection, and when they don’t like what they see. If you don’t like it, Fix it, move on and draw another breath.

With a sound reminiscent of The Ramones, The Clash and Social Distortion, The Swellers might just have an album that could be the break out indie album for the new year.

"I think lyrically this may be our most relatable record,” says Jonathan. “It's about readjusting and finding your place in the world. It's one hell of an awkward adventure we all go through."
