Wham Bam Thank You NAMM !

Article for Xombiewoof Magazine By Musician Mike Veny

For us hardcore musicians, we love playing music and we take music gear seriously. My obsession with music gear started shortly after I learned to play the drums at age 10. While growing up, I looked for every opportunity for my parents to take me into a music store. After a while, they became firm about me not buying anything when we took a trip into the store. Somehow, my enthusiasm always convinced them to buy me something.

Second only to Musikmesse, the Winter NAMM Show is the largest music gear trade show in the world. For most of my life, the NAMM Show was a legendary event that I only heard about and read about. Two years ago, I was invited to the 2011 Winter NAMM Show in Anaheim, California. I’ll never forget walking onto the main floor the first time. It felt like a music store on steroids. I got that same feeling that I had as a kid.

Since I first attended, I’ve created some resources that have helped many of the attendees get the most out of their experience. In case you don’t know, NAMM is an acronym for the National Association of Music Merchants. NAMM should stand for Networking Amongst Many Musicians. Here are 5 tips for successful networking at NAMM Show. Successful networking is one key to growing your career at the NAMM Show. After the first day, you will be exhausted beyond belief. Be sure to read this survival checklist.

Like most live events you attend nowadays, Twitter is a great resource to learn about what’s going on before, during, and after the event. Here are people you must follow on Twitter for the NAMM Show. Be sure to check out the Xombiewoof NAMM Report 2013 for more in-depth information about some of the newest music gear. If you’ll be attending the event, I’d like to meet you.

Eric Clapton Announces Major U.S. Tour Culminating In 2013 Crossroads Guitar Festival Presented By Chase

imageOVER 30 OF THE WORLD’S GREATEST GUITARISTS PLAY SIDEMEN TO EACH OTHER OVER TWO NIGHTS AT THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS ARENA,

MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, APRIL 12-13

Two-Night Festival To Feature Legendary Music And Collaborations Including: Allman Brothers Band, BB King, Brad Paisley, Eric Clapton, Gary Clark Jr.,
Jeff Beck, John Mayer, Keith Urban, Vince Gill and many more

(November 19, 2012) – Widely considered one of the world’s all time greatest guitarists and known amongst his peers as a great collaborator, Eric Clapton announced today a major U.S. tour culminating in his fourth Crossroads Guitar Festival presented by Chase. The Festival, which has become legendary in its own right for hosting performances and impromptu collaborations from the world’s most legendary guitar players, will take place April 12-13 for the first time at New York City’s famed Madison Square Garden. See full listing below of artists performing.

Clapton and his band will visit more than a dozen cities across the U.S. beginning March 14, 2013 (see itinerary below). The tour will end with the two-night Festival where Clapton will gather the past, present and future of guitar music onto one stage for an unparalleled musical event. All profits from the Festival will benefit The Crossroads Centre in Antigua, a treatment and education facility founded by Clapton for chemically dependent persons. The Festival is presented by Chase.

Since its inception, Clapton’s vision for the Crossroads Guitar Festival has been to create an event where his friends and contemporaries can have fun and perform together for the benefit of a good cause. This year’s Festival will feature two-nights of musical performances with once-in-a-lifetime guitar collaborations. Known as pioneers in their field, the roster of artists spans old and new. The audience can expect unrivaled entertainment, brilliant guitar work, surprise guests and impromptu jams that are the hallmark of these performers.

The first Crossroads Guitar Festival, in June 2004 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, was an unprecedented collection of guitar icons from blues, rock and contemporary music. The sold-out show was chronicled in a 2-disc DVD that has since gone on to become one of the world’s top-selling music DVDs. The Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007 and 2010 were the second and third such concerts by Clapton and were staged at Toyota Park in Chicago. Both Festival were filmed for DVDs and met similar acclaim and achieved multi-platinum status. This will be the Festival’s first-ever visit to New York and Madison Square Garden.

“The Crossroads Festival is the realization of a dream for me, to gather a group of amazingly talented musicians to perform on one stage,” said Clapton. “The Crossroads performers are all musicians I admire and respect.”

In addition to the concerts, the “Guitar Center Road to Crossroads Exhibition” will be featured on the Terrace level @ Madison Square Garden and will excite fans with an incredible guitar-centric celebration of past Crossroads Guitar Festivals.  This exhibition will feature the “Legends Guitar Walk”, with some of the most valuable guitars in the history of Rock and Blues, including historic guitars from Guitar Center’s Legends Collection featuring Eric Clapton’s two most famous Fender Stratocaster® guitars, BLACKIE® and ‘Brownie,’ Gibson ES-335 as well as Stevie Ray Vaughan’s ‘Lenny’ Fender Stratocaster®, plus selections from Guitar Center, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Experience Music Project. Additionally, Fender, Gibson, Ernie Ball and Martin will host interactive exhibits where guitar lovers can plug in and play new products and classic favorites, while all visitors will be able to peruse memorabilia and watch archival footage of once-in-a-lifetime performances from prior Crossroads festivals on video walls throughout the exhibition. The “Road to Crossroads Exhibition” will open at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and 6:00 p.m. Saturday, and is free to all ticket holders.

Tickets for the Crossroads Guitar Festival Presented By Chase will be offered as an advance sale to Chase customers beginning Monday, November 26 at 12pm EST via www.ticketmaster.com through Thursday, November 29 at 10pm.

General Public On-Sale will begin Friday, November 30 at 12pm EST.

Xombiewoof’s “How To” - How to pick the right Bass Guitar

Xombiewoof Magazine’s “How To” Series, to help you find the information and Resources to Make Great Music Happen in Your Life. We will be offering more “Hot To” Tips as well as Music education based information here and on our Pro-Source Pages.

Xombiewoof.Com Pro-Source : Tools of The Trade

bass-guitar-wallpaper-8Choosing the perfect bass guitar is a highly personal experience. Every instrument sounds and feels differently to the individual playing it. You have to get a feel for the instrument before you can decide which one meets your needs and standards as a musician.

If you`re new to the bass guitar, the best way to start is to decide what kind of music you want to play. If you`re strictly into jazz, you`ll want to look for bass guitars that are constructed more for jazz players. Likewise, if you`re a rocker through and through, you`ll want to opt for a traditional rock-styled bass.

If you`re shopping for a bass guitar, here are a few features you`ll need to know about:

Body Shapes and Styles

Bass guitars can be found in hollow, semi-hollow and solid body styles. Solid body guitars are capable of being amplified at a much higher volume than hollow-bodies, which can be prone to feedback at higher levels. Solid bodies also offer more sustain sound. Since they rely on amplification rather than on resonance, solid-body guitars are extremely responsive to sound effects. Since a sound chamber isn`t as important on a solid-body, these bass guitars can be found in a wide variety of funky shades and sizes. Solid body basses are generally preferable for those who are playing hard rock, heavy metal, punk and classic rock.

Hollow body bass guitars produce a more acoustic-oriented sound than either solid bodies or semi-hollow bodies. A hollow body bass depends more on the natural resonance of its sound chambers. On the downside, hollow body basses can`t be amplified to extremely high levels, as can solid-bodies. Jazz players vastly prefer hollow body basses because of the authentic acoustic sound that they produce.

Semi-hollow bodies are a great mix for all kinds of musical genres because they offer rich, warm tones and sustained overtones, coupled with a resonance that almost sounds acoustic. Semi-hollows can also be amplified to a much higher volume level than hollow body basses. Country musicians, jazz musicians and many classic rock and pop musicians prefer semi-hollow basses.

Tone Woods

Guitars and basses produce different sounds based on the tone woods used in their construction. Hard woods, such as maple, walnut, ebony, koa and rosewood have a brighter, more percussive tone. Softer woods, such as alder, swamp ash and basswood, produce a warm, mellow tone. For a happy medium, many luthiers prefer using mahogany, which is medium-hard and offers the best qualities of both hard woods and soft woods.

Try It Out First

If you`re not sure whether or not playing the bass guitar is right for you, it`s a good idea to experiment a bit before you purchase one. By borrowing a friend`s bass guitar or renting one, you can practice on it to get the feel of the instrument in your hands. A reputable music store will also provide you with opportunities for trying out instruments before you decide to purchase them.

Watch the Price

Since you`re brand new to the instrument, you probably shouldn`t spend a lot of money for your first bass guitar. Otherwise, you could end up with a costly wall hanger decorating your den. Get the absolute best quality instrument at a price you can afford and then spend an ample amount of practice time with it. After you`ve gotten some musical chops and developed some basic skills, if you decide to continue playing, you can invest in a better model.
If you`re considering
bass guitar options or other options toward furthering your musical hobby, make sure that you do your homework first.

Once you`ve done a bit of research and learned to identify exactly what you want, you`re sure to find that fabulous bass guitar of your dreams.

Sony’s Seasonal Sounds: A Legacy of Holiday Favorites and Classics to Ring in The Holidays and Start The New Year Right

The Classic Christmas Album Collection, featuring Music from:

manilow bennet wnelson denver kennyg vandross presley

Barry Manilow, Tony Bennett, Willie Nelson, John Denver, Kenny G, Luther Vandross and Elvis Presley.

Review by Joseph Timmons, Xombiewoof Magazine.

Well, another year is almost over and the holidays are upon us, soon the Thanksgiving leftovers will be the next day’s lunch and the Christmas party planning will begin. Christmas has always been a favorite holiday for me because of my childhood memories, the family all together in one place, the festivities and the Christmas music that makes every magical moment seem even more special. I often dig out my old LP’s and try to get a playlist of my favorite songs and artists together to create an environment of yuletide joy for friends and family that come by during the month, and it is never an easy task with everyone having so many different tastes in music.

Sony Legacy seems to have made this year’s holiday music planning easier for me, and for anyone who wants to enjoy the very best of the holiday season’s most special music with their Classic Christmas Album Series, there are seven different albums by seven spectacular artists that have delighted and inspired us to feel joy throughout the season, if not our entire lives. The artists selected are exemplary and renowned for their ever memorable careers in music, Barry Manilow, Luther Vandross, Kenny G, John Denver, Tony Bennett, Willie Nelson and the king himself, Elvis Presley.

Each album is overflowing with both Christmas classics and the artists personal interpretations of holiday music that makes each one unique unto itself, as well as setting this series to be the definitive Holiday Season Music Collection - each artist’s album spotlights the artists rich talents and select duets with other artists known for their warmth and tender voices.

The Luther Vandross album will delight many for his soulful and emotionally charged styles, the John Denver collection of classics are deep with his down home sensitivity. The Kenny G album, with its soft textures create an ambient mood of perfection, Willie Nelson gives us a Country Christmas with all the trimmings, Tony Bennett and Barry Manilow give a more jazzy and upbeat tone to bring any and every party up to sleigh-ride speed. Elvis Presley rounds it all up by his well-known and award winning performance, Elvis, even now has popularity that is, like this album, timeless.

This season, give the gift of music to yourself, your friends, family and everyone by selecting from Sony Legacy’s magnificent collection of artists and the Classic Christmas Album Series, this is music that will make your “merry merry” and your new year bright.

Find out more at http://www.sonymusic.com, http://www.legacyrecordings.com/ and find the albums online or at your local retailers.

Graphic Novels? Not Really. by Sean Stoltey

Graphic Novels.  I am getting so sick of this term.  Not because it is invalid, but because it has become misused and abused.  It all started with Hollywood, of course.  Some suit somewhere decided that the general public looks down on comic books, but graphic novels are acceptable.  So suddenly you hear every actor and director working on comic book adaptations referring to the “graphic novels”.  Sounds very tony, much more high class than the oh so pulpy “comic books”.  Unfortunately, it also sounds like bullshit because it doesn’t fit.  Graphic Novels are actually a very specific thing within the realm of Comic Books.

In the 1970’s the medium of comic books had been around for over thirty years.  The artists working within it were starting to feel constrained by it.  They wanted to experiment and really do things that were different.  Some of them wanted to do much more serious work.  Thus, the “Graphic Novel” was born.  Will Eisner’s A Contract With God is considered by many to be the first of them.  It had four short stories that all took place within a 1930’s Bronx tenement and it was inspired by Eisner’s own life experiences.  It was a finite work, designed to exist as one lone piece on the shelf.  It was not serialized.  One book, one statement.  Like a novel, but…you know…graphic.  Marvel started a line of graphic novels.  Two of their most notable, The Death of Captain Marvel and X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills, did feature characters from their serialized comic books but were finite stories published in single volumes.  Dc did Which is the perfect description of a Graphic Novel: finite stories published as a single volume.

Comic books are serialized fiction.  They are published (generally speaking) on a monthly basis and while issues can stand alone, they are all part of one giant ongoing story.  That obviously says nothing about the quality of their content.  Nor does the finiteness of Graphic Novels say anything about their quality.  Somehow along the way, the term Graphic Novel became accepted as something more serious.  Something of consequence.  Which is all fine.  Most creators who set out to do a proper Graphic Novel are usually trying to say something a little more important.  Whether they are using original creations or pre-existing characters they are trying to set themselves apart from the rest of the books by creating a large story that can be read in one volume.  Because of the import of some past Graphic Novels, it is a an announcement of serious intent and a proclamation of quality or importance.

Quite a while back publishers started collecting their regular comic books into paperback collections.  Usually it was special, popular or “important” storylines.  These are referred to as Trade Paperbacks.  The practice has become so prevalent though, it is basically every book published these days.  When the book is special or important they might do a Hardcover Collection.  Although they are starting to do that more and more as well, and in the process are diluting the inherent importance brought by a hardcover.  Unfortunately, strapping a bunch of comic books together in one volume DOES NOT make them Graphic Novels.  If it was not originally published as a Graphic Novel, it is a comic book.  So what’s wrong with that?  Absolutely nothing.

In the day and age of “Let your Geek Flag fly.” and people who are constantly proclaiming that “Geeks rule the Earth.”  There is nothing wrong with saying that you love comic books.  At least there shouldn’t be.  So when I see comic book shop owners saying “Come in for the latest Graphic Novels!” it’s quite a bit disheartening.  You sell comic books, own that.  Be proud of it.  Comic books are one of the great American institutions.  They were invented here, they were perfected here.  Unlike Rock and Roll, we still do it, and always have done it, best.  So comic book fans and comic book sellers unite and embrace that thing which we love:  COMIC BOOKS!  Oh, and their fancy cousin, the Graphic Novel.

Sean Stoltey, writer, raconteur and retired rabble rouser, hails originally from California's Central Coast but currently resides in Southern California's BEAUTIFUL--San Fernando Valley. Screenwriter, Comic Book author, these are things he does because he's too poor to be a Producer or Publisher.
Sean has been reading comics, watching movies, reading books and selling his soul (or at least his hearing) to Rock'n'Roll for as long as he can remember. He has been discussing and arguing about these things for almost as long.
So now he has come here to throw his opinions in your face as well and hope that, even if you don't agree, hopefully you will enjoy them. For the record: Kirk was the greatest Enterprise Captain, Han was the only one that shot, Led Zeppelin was the greatest Rock band to walk the Earth and Keith Richards is the coolest undead person to walk the Earth. Coolest living people are my sons and my Mom and Dad. My Dad F---in' rocks, and my Mom can kick your ass.
