THE FEISTY PIRANHAS - SOME BACKGROUND

There’s no misnomer here, as the Feisty Piranhas lived up to their name in the music, stage presence, and personality.

A pop punk, rock, and reggae band hailing from Ventura County, California, Feisty Piranhas brought a vivacious and spunky energy to the music scene, both on stage and off.

Started by father/son drummer and guitarist duo Peter Lust, Jr. and Peter Alex Lust III in 2002, the band made quite a splash, winning numerous recognitions and awards –  “Showcase Artist of the Year” at the 20th Annual Los Angeles Music Awards, with Peter Lust also nabbing the LAMA's "Rock Drummer of the Year". They were selected a “Top 100 Unsigned/Independent Artist for 2008” by respected national trade publication, MUSIC CONNECTION, in their year-end December issue.

The high-energy band brought a hard, loud, and fast sound to the stage, favorably compared to groups as diverse as Green Day and NOFX, Rush, and even Pink Floyd. It's no wonder that the Feisty Piranhas were invited to play at world-renowned venues and opened for big name acts like punk stalwarts The Misfits and Dragonforce, as well as seminal rockers Blue Oyster Cult and The Tubes.

WHAT THE MEDIA SAID... ABOUT THE FEISTY PIRANHAS

VENTURA COUNTY REPORTER - “Feisty Piranhas are led on vocals and guitar by 24-year-old Peter Alexander Lust III and backed up by his father, Peter Lust (“Pops”), a spacecraft consultant by day and punk rock drummer by night. The show should make for an interesting audience mix as the more mature B.O.C. fans mingle with some feisty pop punkers in the pit.”

ROCKWIRED MAGAZINE - “Dark, moody, Socal punk/pop with unexpected flourishes."

VENTURA COUNTY STAR - “They bring so much energy...the band’s mix of blues-punk-hard rock guitar, progressive rock drumming, emotional vocals, and razor sharp clarinet harmonies creates a new breed of songs that are catchy but also have true emotion and musical attitude that are supported by Peter Alex’s lyrics".

ALL ACCESS MAGAZINE - "Feisty Piranhas have a very melodic but in-your-face sound that mixes punk, reggae, ska, and pop punk…at The Key Club the band were able to play to the crowd’s needs and gained new fans with their Sublime-ish/reggae-ish tone of music. Even the hard rockers were clapping to the band's groove, finishing it off with a solid cover of Guns N’ Roses “Sweet Child O’ Mine.”

WEST HOLLYWOOD PATCH - “The Feisty Piranhas came down from Ventura County to spread the concept of community and integrity throughout the independent music scene as well as to properly rock out an eight‐song set…the band put on a valiant display, serving as the perfect appetizer for FEAR's eight‐course beating.”

If he could speak from Heaven, the young Lust - a mere 24 when he unexpectedly passed away in January 2014 - might now be saying, "I come down to you though my father. Thank you for thinking of me.

I am alive in a different place and I am watching down on all of you. Keep your wills high, I am an angel now. An angel that is keeping over all of my friends and those who care and think of the spirit I left behind.

Do not for a second believe that nothing is here, it is bustling with sprints and Angels that care for all of you on what we call earth. God does bless you".

Paiste Cymbals to Debut New Lines at 2015 NAMM Convention

Featuring Designs Inspired By Legends in The Music World

Unlimited Noise for Limited Budgets

The renowned Swiss cymbal maker Paiste announces the launch of the new PSTX. Trashy effect sounds to complement the classic cymbal type, crash, ride and hi-hat in the set are very much the trend. Paiste now goes a step further and introduces the PSTX, a complete collection of extremely affordable effect cymbals.

The core of the PSTX is made up of the Swiss models, cymbals that achieve a noisy, dirty, trashy sound quality by the use of specific layouts and varied sizes for the holes. Their silky surface distinguishes the cymbals visually. The aluminum Pure Bells stand out due to their distinct character and concept. The 14", 16" and 18" Swiss Thin Crashes provide exotic, warm, deep crash sounds. They are immediately responsive and fade just as quickly. Drummers who look for more aggressiveness and volume will find the 18" Swiss Medium Crash a perfect choice.

The 10" Swiss Splash produces very light, airy accents. The 14" Swiss Flanger Crash responds just as fast. Due to its low tension construction it features an explosive flanging and undulating sound that stands out uniquely. Both cymbals are well-suited for hand playing. It gets really exciting when you combine two PSTX cymbals from different alloys. The 10", 14" and 16" Swiss Hats are striking rhythm instruments with a dry, noisy sound that evokes the hi-hat sounds of analog drum machines.

With the 14" Swiss Flanger Stack both cymbals are mounted with the bells facing up. Depending on how much the pair is tightened on the stand, the sustain changes from a hi-hat like dry to shattering crash effects. In the manufacture of the 9" and 10" Pure Bells Paiste uses aluminum for the first time. These bells distinguish themselves through their warm, calm and pure sound.

PSTX are made from 2002 bronze, brass and aluminum in Switzerland using modern, innovative methods.

Dave Lombardo rules in Metal

2The renowned cymbal maker Paiste announces the launch of the new 22" RUDE Power Ride The Reign.

Dave Lombardo is the pioneer of speed metal drumming. In the beginning of the 80s he massively raised the bar for speed and aggressiveness with Slayer. The album Reign In Blood attained cult status, also thanks to Dave’s legendary double bass drumming. Since back then Lombardo swears by the RUDE cymbals.

This year Paiste celebrates the 35th anniversary of the series that defines the sound of punk and metal until today. To commemorate the anniversary Paiste collaborated with Dave Lombardo to create the 22" RUDE Power Ride The Reign. It’s based on the original cymbal which can be heard on Reign In Blood.

This extremely heavy ride cymbal features a cutting, metallic ping; always clear even in extreme volume situations. Its vitality supports Lombardo’s preference for dynamic, agile playing. The large bell leaves nothing to be desired in terms of aggressiveness and fullness.

The raw look of the non-lathed 22" RUDE Power Ride «The Reign» is a classic and underlines the lusty, brute power of the cymbal. The groove on the bell provides a shot of extra depth.

RUDEs are entirely made by hand in Switzerland from the original CuSn8 bronze using traditional methods that have remained unchanged in over half a century.

Tight and Crisp

3The renowned cymbal maker Paiste announces the launch of the new 12" Signature Combo Crisp Hi-Hat The Rhythmatist.

Stewart Copeland achieved international fame as member of British New Wave icon

The Police. On one hand, chart hits like Roxanne, So Lonely or Every Breath You Take delighted the fans.

On the other hand, Copeland’s unorthodox style of accompanying these songs influenced generations of drummers. At present he works as composer of sound tracks, ballet, opera and orchestral music.

Stewart Copeland teamed up with Paiste Sound Development to design a dynamic hi-hat small enough for fine articulation, yet crisp enough to cut through at all volume levels. The result is the 12" Signature Combo Crisp Hi-Hat The Rhythmatist.

Paiste uses different alloys for the top and bottom cymbals. The CuSn20 Bronze top is responsible for warmth and fullness, while the Signature Bronze bottom provides brilliance and precision. Played closed the hi-hat produces a rather dry, crisp sound. The chick sound is full and razor-sharp. Thus the Compo Crisp Hi-Hat is well suited for drummers who want to emulate Stewart’s subtle, nuanced style, or as a powerful auxiliary hi-hat.

Signatures are entirely made by hand from the originally used Signature bronze in Switzerland using traditional methods that have remained unchanged in over half a century.

The Logical Extension of a Classic

5The renowned cymbal maker Paiste announces the launch of the new 22" Formula 602 Medium Ride.

The Formula 602 Medium Ride epitomizes the easy to control, pure, all-purpose ride cymbal. Designed in the middle of the last century, it still sets standards with its high-class workmanship and classic look. Clinic virtuoso Gergo Borlai, Berklee professor Henrique De Almeida and last but not least drum genius Vinnie Colaiuta already use either the 20" or 24" version of this cymbal on tour and in the studio.

The new 22" Formula 602 Medium Ride extends the assortment of Formula 602 - Classic Sounds to 13 models. It shines through its perfect balance of a smooth, sparkling ping and a full, rich wash as well as a clear, yet unobtrusive bell sound.

Thanks to the new choice of Medium Rides in 20", 22" and 24" drummers now have a finer gradation available with regard to depth, pitch and volume to individually implement their personal sound.

Formula 602s are entirely made by hand from the originally used CuSn20 bronze in Switzerland using traditional methods that have remained unchanged in over half a century.

From Aggressive to Captivating

4The renowned cymbal maker Paiste announces the launch of the new 10" 2002 Mega Bell.

Paiste’s 2002 series made rock history … and keeps on going. The 10" 2002 Mega Bell adds a piercing, heavy bell sound with tremendous sustain to rock drummers’ setups, which is impossible to ignore even in loud situations.

Its sound character is bright, yet warm. Played with the shoulder of the drumstick an extremely powerful, woody attack dominates, flowing into a strong, slightly glimmering tone that fades very slowly.

Like the legendary 2002 cymbals, the 10" 2002 Mega Bell is also well-suited for other styles. Percussionists and musical experimenters will discover extraordinary, captivating sounds, depending on where you hit the bell or when played with various mallets.

2002s are entirely made by hand in Switzerland from the original CuSn8 bronze using traditional methods that have remained unchanged in over half a century

LORD OF THE TRIDENT – IN THE GROOVE PODCAST INTERVIEW

“ Our metal's so pure that only diamonds can scratch it, and usually the diamonds are the ones that end up getting hurt in the end. Our amps are so loud, Manowar knocked on our door and asked us to "please turn down". Don't let your girlfriends near LORDS OF THE TRIDENT, 'cause our music is guaranteed to make panties explode. You think you're bad? While you're watching our sweep picking wondering how they bend space-time to fit all the notes in, we'll punch you right in the face without missing a beat. “

Concert Review and Photographs by Jessica Martinez

It's was a beautiful summer evening at the Santa Barbara Bowl, Eddie Vedder, front man for Pearl Jam would be performing for his fans at a sold out show at one of Santa Barbara’s most popular venues to support his most recent solo album Ukulele Songs . The sun was up with clear skies and a slight breeze that made for a perfect day at this open air amphitheater. When I arrived at the bowl, some fans were gathered at the plaza, socializing, lounging and making merry, while others took their seats awaiting the start of the evening’s performances.

As the opening performer, Glen Hansard took the stage; fans flocked from the terrace to the theater. Hansard, who's is well known for his Academy and Critics Choice Awards song, “Falling Slowly”, from the Once Soundtrack, followed up this hit with other originals "Leave" and "Low Rising". Glen then surprised the audience with his cover of Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks." Throughout these songs, Hansard belted a range of vocal notes which sounded amazing to hear live. Hansard finished his set and left the stage to a standing ovation; fans stood up and applauded with much appreciation.

During the preparation of equipment for Eddie Vedder, fans headed back to the plaza for drinks and other accommodations. It seemed the longer the wait, the more excited some fans became. Sporadic burst of laughter occurred throughout the crowd while socializing at the plaza which clearly indicated they were having a great time. It was about 8:00 pm, with the sun still lighting up the skies, when Eddie Vedder took the stage. He was greeted with a standing and a roaring crowd. With Ukulele in hand, Eddie Vedder began with "Can't Keep," from his solo album titled, Ukulele Songs. After performing the opening song, in a bantering way, Vedder says, "Feel free to buy me a Drink”, fans were very quick to oblige.

IMG_0814          IMG_0841          IMG_0791

He continued to play songs from his solo album, and then played some Pearl Jam favorites, “Wish list", "Unthought Known", "Parting Ways" and "Off he goes". As Eddie switched to an acoustic guitar for the fifth song, he says, "Everybody get comfortable. We're going to be here for a while."

IMG_0789

Eddie continued to play for the next couple of hours, he performed some cover songs, such as "Hurt," by Nine Inch Nails, Redemption Song," by Bob Marley," "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," by the Beatles, and Needle and the Damage Done," by Neil Young. The concert ended with duets from Vedder and Hansard which included "Falling slowly," and "Dream a Little Dream of me”.

The combination of both their vocals was a perfect end to this event.

Stereo Steve live at Tap It Brewing

YOULL NEVER BELIEVE THIS STORY”

What a night, after eight years married my husband and i still find new and exciting ways to have our date nights.  A new opportunity pulled us up to a San Luis Obispo brewery.  Even the most popular pub, club or  bar can have their drawbacks mainly due to the over population.  This is why  many prefer trying something new.  Any chance my husband and I have we try and escape the riggers of life, kids, repetition and do something fun.  As my husband and I drive we enter a set of side roads that lead you down a dark street where the only sign of life  is the lights ahead from the stage at Tap it Brewing Company.  The  band known as ”STREO STEVE” was performing this particular night at  Tap it Brewing Company.  When entering the brewery  your delighted to see the rustic California feel from the front bar all the way out onto the back patio which is filled with seating and standing  areas that are surrounded by heaters as well as surrounded with beautiful lighting.  The wonderful California country backdrop is highlighted by a warm gem fire pit that stands in the center of the patio.  You are able to listen, dance and enjoy the nightly live music.  Even in the dead of winter your able to enjoy the music, food and surrounding area that is modeled for both couples, college students, friends or simply a new hang out.  Over all other hidden gems I have been too I enjoyed adding this to my list.  Check out the beer advocate calendar to find a list of upcoming events.

Wile enjoying the new experience at Tap it Brewing Company I was there to support, cheer on  and interview the leading band known as ”STEREO STEVE” a musical duo performing recognizable nuggets as well as their own original tracks that will keep you moving and toe tapping all night long.  “STEREO STEVE” is an entertaining band that can keep your attention with their overall energy and sound.  Even when the occasional technical issue would occur they would connect even more with the audience adding some fun jokes on their behalf with a smile and energy of a band WIN_20150102_181952performing for hundreds.  I enjoyed every minute that I had watching this band.  The band was on a tight set that night so I was very delighted when they both were all smiles when I asked for a quick interview.  During a break in sets I was able to catch up with the band.the lead drummer Mr..Hilstein was my first to greet and with a warm welcome to their event we began.

Question:  when did you first start playing ?

STEVE HILSTEIN answer: I was surrounded by music by my parents passion, both who were dancers but not one can hold a tune on any instrument. i was the first, I recall I started at age four on my home made drum set, consisting of a quicker oats box and sticks”  this is when we just new this was my path and even today i love music filled with the same love i had when i was a child. weather I'm playing on  thousand dollar drum set or messing around on my home maid cereal box i can feel the music.

Question: what was your first song you played ?

STEVE HILSTEIN answer: Rock Around the Clock, in our fourth grade school performance that was my first song along with my own creations i was able to play rock around the clock  with ease and ever since i have been a drummer, singer and a overall lover of all music.

After thanking them for a quick interview Mr.. Hilstein fled to eat  before the intermission was over.  He rushed off with a smile  waving bye and I turned my attention to.  Steve Ambarian the lead guitarist and mandolin player of  “Stereo Steve.”  With a smile he gladly participated in the interview.

Question:  At what age were you playing?

Steve Ambarian answer : the earliest I can remember was my first performance in  middle school here in central California the mandolin and guitar and my musical extensions, my other parts even when I picked up the guitar it was as easy as breathing for me self teach and soon master the guitar and even now i show youngster teaching a talent i just had and even to this love every second i play. i cant think of another life were i wasn't paying my guitar or mandolin.

Question: Describe your reaction when you first step on stage?

STEVE AMBARRIAN answer: some times ill get a small amount of  nerves show up just before a gig but mostly excited, more excite then sick, even when a switch turns off or a off stage incidence happens i can keep my head. I'm comfortable still every time i do feel the butterflies stirring but as soon as i began to lay it all fades away.

The time went by so fast it still seems a blur.  It was great  interviewing such talented musicians all while enjoying the rest the set.  I couldn’t ask for a better new experience.  By the end of  the set “STEREO STEVE” was  calling out people who wanted a favorite melody filling the needs of the audience who the whole night danced along enjoying the music.   My husband and I left while indulged by the sounds that “STEREO STEVE” had dished out.  “STEREO STEVE” plays at Tap it Brewing Company along with a number of other gigs that can be found on their Facebook page, “STEREO STEVE” and enjoy your next night out.

Colette Miller Giving the World Wings

Colette Miller Giving the World Wings

By Mike Ritchie

1395967_10152487420963178_5303108641397213773_n-1Colette Miller (www.facebook.com/colettemiller9?fref=ts) has been spreading her spirit and talent via the painting palate for many years. Creating her own work inspired by dreams, animals, life and other worthy causes she’s involved in. Since the early 90’s she’s painted animals on everything from bridges to walls to business trucks from Virginia to New York, California to Africa and Tanzania but the art that’s really ‘taken flight’ has been her signature angel wings https://www.facebook.com/colettemillerartist . There’s no bull in her ‘wings’, but they are in high demand across the world as everyone from tourists, locals, businessmen and celebrities want a piece of her brush stroke.

Her art has been influenced by many cultures including the Middle East, Europe, China, Tibet, Africa (where she painted a mural for an orphanage) and the Americas. She finds vast emotional, physical, mental stimulus and inspiration in the surrounding environment and her hand spreads the ideas across the canvas. She’s painted since childhood, making her designs reflect the peace of the composition’s subject and colors. The spiritualism used in its creation and found in its projection is a driving force in her desire to create a mystical remembrance.

Her angelic talent has caught the attention/interest of artistic minds from Kenya, West Virginia, Virginia, LA, Sydney and Washington DC with future work scheduled for New York and a recent trip to Australia commissioned by Arts Brookfield earned her seven spots at major properties in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney which were on display throughout October. A Nairobi Kenya boxing association named their team Koyale Wings Miller after her art.

Colette-Miller-Wings-2The creation of her art can come from oil based mediums, or acrylic paint for the wings, on top of canvas, paper or wood with UV paint sunscreen, varnishes and sometimes placed on adhesive vinyl when pieces need to be removed. But there’s no limit to what she’ll use if there’s a need to expand. She also makes sure her work is durable so it’ll last outdoors against the elements.

She’s populated the world with around 30 pairs so far, from her current residence fittingly The City of Angels to the impoverished walls of Nairobi. She’s painted in some rough neighborhoods, intent to make her art instill feelings of safety and hope against the most barren and desolate backgrounds.

Her first pair was inspired from a need she saw in society to repel negativity in the spring of 2012 and by July she’d completed them. The collective message of each pair in part says “we can be angels in this world and the good in humanity.” They are at face value and in detail nice, pleasant images, unique to look at and full of abstraction and real symbols of peace. Life sized so people can stand between them and feel good about themselves, angelic, protected or all three. Her first two creations were graffiti art, though illegal, garnered positive attention from the community inspiring many to take spontaneous pictures with them and as more were made posting pictures on social media. After taking a movable pair to the Autumn Lights Festival and exposing them to a larger audience she was granted permission for a Main Street display by mutual friend Joe Moller via TK Nagano. She also received attention from the LA Mayor who came out, took photos and became a supporter.

Hungry_PandaHer animal art comes from oils and canvas and a meditative compensation she receives from her mind and life experiences as an impressionist. She characterizes herself as a colorist, letting the different shades harmonize with themselves. Her pieces include Alien on a Plane with Crows, Crows on a Fence, Flying Pink Pig, and China’s Hungry (Panda in a Bamboo Forest).

She’s also looked into the camera’s eye veering into editing and producing for projects on water shortage in Burkina Faso, eco-news in Tibet and sustainable fishing in Alaska. Also presently in post is a film on corruption in Kenya. She also paints sets for TV and movies in LA.

For those familiar with the band GWAR, Miller has early musical ties to the band of dressed up monster players and gore-fed, spewing noise makers. From 1986-87, she embraced playing Amazina aka GWAR Girl, after sharing the stage briefly with Heather Broome aka The Temptress, who left in 1986, she was the sole female in the group in the early days of the original band performing on stage. Working construction to survive, enduring mother-nature’s wrath and cold showers while the band was living in the old dairy plant turned warehouse, the Milk Bottle, in Richmond Virginia she studied/worked on art, attending VCU. While attending university she also played keyboards in MILK, a spontaneous performance art band with Jim Thompson, Ron Curry, Tom Harris, Mark Linkous and Dave Brockie aka the voice of GWAR, Oderus Urungus. Miller along with the others did double duty a few times when Milk opened for GWAR putting the GWAR garb on directly after. Later on in ‘87 personal differences caused Miller to leave.

Screen_Shot_2014-09-20_at_10.58.36_AMEarlier this year in March Brockie passed away from an accidental heroin overdose closing the 50 billion year run of his alter ego and the sole original member, ending an era and leaving the bands future unknown. A private service was followed by a public memorial held at Hadad’s Lake in Richmond with fans, friends and former band members including Miller paying their respects, ending with a Viking funeral send off to the Oderus Urungus costume and character. Miller recently created a pair of wings for the GWAR tribute show in LA featuring rare footage, drawings, costume designs and band tour shirts covering the 1990-1994 era(Miller was in South Africa during that time) with photos by former slave pit girl Melanie Mandl.

Screen_Shot_2014-09-23_at_10.10.17_AMMiller has very cherished memories of Brockie and the bands beginnings. Each era of GWAR had chapters and hers was the most vintage and less raunchy and bloody. She joked “I was in the rated G version” if that’s possible. She’s seen the evolution/reinvention of characters that have kept the band and its legacy going strong. He was and still is very popular and fondly remembered in Richmond as he is around the world. Thirty years later, she’s happy to see a female member take an active front stage, vocal position. Michael Bishop aka Blothar was chosen as Urungus’s successor accompanied by the first female presence since 2000, Vulvatron aka Kung Fu Dyke Kim Dylla. Miller saw the band for the first time in years earlier this month at the House of Blues and was impressed with the costumes and music. She also has a pair of wings in front of the venue.

Vulvatron and her large prosthetic blood spewing breasts made their debut this year at Riot fest in Chicago. The slave pit will never be the same. Though the two represent complete different era’s, Vulvatron as a strong, empowered female role showcases the ascension and prominence of women in the once all male dominated world of metal. It remains to be seen if all the scumdogs of the universe accept an Oderus-less GWAR and their new gor-i-fied reigning queen. Miller will always hold dear and sacred the original inspiration and spirit of what a ragtag bunch of art-school students started as an oddity in the mid-eighties in a cold milk bottle shaped warehouse that spawned and spanned a 30 year history.

Miller’s wings have become her trademark, recently transcending mediums into stained glass. Her next upcoming project will be a trip to Juarez Mexico for four pairs promoting messages of hope for humanity and it’s revitalization against drug cartels and violence. She’ll continue making them as long as there’s a demand, desire, need and a personal calling to create them while giving the world hope.

Hal Leonard has published Riff Notes, a series of quick, easy, and informative single-topic guides for novice and experienced players alike. These guides explain in less than 30 pages, all the basics needed to make an informed decision on which guitar and which strings are right for you.

The authors have both worked on the floor of Guitar Center, helping customers make purchasing decisions every day. Along the way, they discovered that many people had the same questions. The Riff Notes series provides practical answers to these common questions.

Many books cover guitars and playing techniques in depth, but the majority of them assume an intermediate level of guitar knowledge, or cover such a wide range of topics that it may seem overwhelming and too time-consuming to read. The single-topic Riff Notes cover this gap and provide quick answers to the most common guitar questions.

Designed to easily fit in guitar cases or gig bags, the booklets introduce the guitar with simplified terminology and explanations, practical applications and tips. Written in an accessible and engaging tone, the following three titles are available now:

Electric Guitar Basics and Acoustic Guitar Basics cover the differences between the many types of electric guitars, as well as the crucial differences between necks, tuning keys, fretboards, pickups, bridges, bodies, woods. Also included is shopping advice, fun facts, and trivia to engage readers of any playing level.

Guitar String Basics explains everything there is to know about this extremely important part of the guitar, both for electric and acoustic guitars. The two main types of strings, steel and nylon, are fully explored. Any guitar comes with strings already on it, but knowing all about them - what kind is right for your guitar and how to maintain and replace them - is essential.
