It is good to be King - King Kartel brings it in a new British Invasion

Introduction / Music Review: King Kartel

By Joseph Timmons: Xombiewoof Magazine

KK Logo cover

King Kartel, self-announced as “a band without compromise” is just that, an honest voice of the new UK generation. Based out of Manchester England, singer Hugh McCreesh's leads a unit of inventive and talented musicians through a modern “post-Punk” inspired repertoire of bright and vibrant music, vocals that stand out among other bands, which rely on glitz than true talent. I would say that Hugh, Mo, Tom and Mick have what it takes to make the message of their music matter.

Their music - loud and radio-friendly (but nowhere near the boring “Euro-Pop” that flows like water through the US airwaves) is heavy and speaks to their audience as only real British Rockers can.

Their intrinsic moody tones reverberate and create a synergy that is melodic and hypnotic. They draw their style from influences such as The Libertines, The Beatles, The Courteeners, The Vaccines, Oasis, Stone Roses, and The White Stripes.

King Kartel’s music has a backbeat of driving rhythms with a mix of modern / bright guitar work and unpretentious vocals for today’s youth, but I would compare them to early works of The Clash mixed with Post pop music such as 80’s icons like the Sugarcubes or the introspective lyrical content of The Smiths, but without the dark or depressing prose.

King Kartel is not afraid to poise themselves in front of the mirror and see themselves for what they are and show in their music the face of youth trying to make sense of a crazy world they will soon inherit and try to repair.

King Kartel has released several songs, available to listen to on Soundcloud and I would presume is working their way towards a fantastic national release, but on their website http://www.kingkartel.com, They make no reference to an album, but direct their fans and new followers to their YouTube site to view performance videos and online social sites to listen and share their music, I would suggest you see and share their music and follow their progress.

oct releaseKing Kartel will be releasing their Debut EP due out on October 1st of this year. Tentatively, it will be called 'Not Done Fighting’. The title track has already been well received and getting strong airplay on BBC.

With upbeat tracks like “How’d He Ever Pull That” to driving anthems like “Stone Cold Killer” and “Artillery” it is obvious that King Kartel has the right to rule the night club scene and will definitely move up to the ranks of Rock and Roll royalty.

Orange Amplification: their Legacy in Music History and New Webstore Services for Today

image

When Orange Amplification founder Cliff Cooper opened a music shop and recording studio in the summer of 1968, he never imagined that from this near-derelict premises in the heart of swinging London, a sound and a brand would emerge that would still be going strong more than forty years later. With innovative design concepts and a desire to create a new way to bring an artist’s sound alive to their fans and in the studio.

The tone and expertise that went into the development of the first Orange amps is legendary. Guitar luminaries like Peter Green and Paul Kossoff plugged into early prototypes at the Orange Shop, and their feedback was baked into the amp circuitry. In its earliest conception, as well as today, Orange has a unique sound that many have tried to copy but has never duplicated.

ledzep1 The Story of OrangeOrange took to heart guitar design legend Les Paul’s maxim that “people hear with their eyes”, and began producing heads and cabinets that once seen, could never be forgotten. All of Orange’s trademark design cues were there from the start: the vivid vinyl covering, the amp control hieroglyphics, and the regal crest, establishing a look that has set the standard for British amplifiers ever since.

As the sixties drew to a close, Orange amps began to be seen on stage with some of the biggest names in music. Fleetwood Mac were the first chart group to go Orange in late ‘68, taking the company’s first half-dozen 100 watt amps to America, and in 1969, Peter Green took the first 200 watt head on their spring tour with BB King. Pretty soon, the list of Orange converts began to fill up with names that still inspire legions of devoted fans today: Stevie Wonder, Jimmy Page, John Mayall, and even James Brown – the King of Soul himself – relied on Orange’s already famous tone.

The crunchy mid-range of Orange’s amps made them popular with blues-influenced rock bands like Led Zeppelin, Free, and even metal pioneers Black Sabbath. Sales exploded on the back of these influential endorsements, and with the release of the classic 80 & 120 watt OR amp, at one point Orange was even outselling Marshall.

After the electronic revolution of the 1980s, rock music was ready for a comeback, and Orange was waiting. Bands like Oasis and Travis went looking for the sounds they’d grown up with, and turned to Orange’s quintessentially British tone in their droves. Orange was back, and production ramped up on a new generation of amps that would propel the company into a new millennium.

Just as the leading lights of the 60s and 70s helped shape the Orange sound for their generation, in 1997, Noel Gallagher popped in to Orange HQ to lend a hand. Touring with U2 at the time, Noel wanted more sparkle and crunch out of his amp, and after plugging in and cranking every available dial up to ten, he showed the Orange team what he meant. Noel’s feedback was integral to the development of a new overdrive circuit for the OTR head, delivering crunch, sparkle, and sustain that has endured through the history on modern rock.

In 1998 the flagship AD series launched, which helped establish Orange back at the top of the amp tree. Quickly becoming a favorite with recording stars everywhere, the AD15 was Jimmy Page’s amp of choice on tour with the Black Crowes. Then in 1999, the AD15 became the first British amp to win an ‘Editor’s Pick’ award from US Guitar Player magazine.

Rock’s return to the top of the charts inspired a new wave of aspiring guitarists and with the launch of the affordable Crush in 2001, for the first time Orange was able to cater to beginners and guitarists of modest means at a truly affordable level. At the other end of the scale, Orange continued to add to its impressive list of acolytes, handling the tone requirements for everyone from Prince to Slipknot, from Madonna to the Arctic Monkeys.

During the course of the decade, Orange continued to innovate, adding new models to the product line such as the Rockerverb (favored by Jim Root of Slipknot, and Madonna’s guitarist Monte Pittman). Then, in 2006, a completely new concept in portable amplification was unveiled: the Tiny Terror. This little amp came with its own custom-made gig bag, and sold over ten thousand units in its first year. Guitarists were suddenly liberated by the ability to take studio standard amplification absolutely anywhere. From its successful launch, the Terror family has grown to include the Dual Terror, the Terror Bass, the Terror Combo and the Dark Terror to name but a few. On the back of these impressive sales, and even more impressive innovation, 2006 also saw Orange win its first Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

In 2008 Orange celebrated its 40th birthday, launching custom shop limited editions, and the Anniversary OR50 head. A year later, the company would celebrate its second Queen’s Award for Enterprise, firmly establishing Orange as one of Britain’s global success stories.

Recently at the NAMM conventions, the Orange displays have been abuzz with interest in existing product lines, support lines and accessories, as well as glimpses at new model prototypes. Orange has and continues to set trends and work diligently towards making the art of music and sound their primary goal from design to finished product.

The Pleasure of Painside – Brazilian Metal Rises to Progressive Perfection

Music Review by Joseph Timmons: Xombiewoof Magazine

Review of Painside’s new EP – Build Your Fiction

painside cover

The problem with the newest offering by Painside, Build Your Fiction is that it is phenomenal, rich in harmony and proof that new, vibrant and real talent in the Progressive Metal scene exists outside the traditional venues, but the album is way too short. I found myself wanting more; it was hard and fast and very, very good, but over way too soon.

Since the release of their first epic album Dark World Burden, an album full and powerful, with perfect resonance in both skill and meaning, this EP Build Your Fiction is a shot the music scene this country really needs. Originating from Brazil, I don’t believe any artists from that area since Sepltura has grabbed the attention of US fans as fast and as true.

painside group

Build Your Fiction could be a vision of things to come, lyrically sound and musically artful, Painside weaves thoughtful messages and dynamic harmonies together in tracks titled “A Caustic Romance”, “Break the Hive”, “Reject The Silence” and the epic “Unbreakable”, which was used as the entrance music for UFC Fighter Ronys Torres, these are four heart pounding songs that hit you like bolt of lightning and resuscitate your spirit.

I am going to seriously follow Painside’s development and news, bringing this fantastic group’s story to you as it develops; Painside is one strong import to have in your life.

If you have not yet heard their first album Dark World Burden, I suggest you get it now and see why I want to see more from this Brazilian Super Group !

In this clip, newly created by the band, watch The Clash announce the release of Sound System in "The Cut Out Show": http://smarturl.it/CutOutShow.

See the trailer for Sound System here: http://youtu.be/bgL_CBC83qk .

Conceived and compiled by The Clash, Sound System is a significant and unique collection of the complete recorded works by the 20th century’s most influential British band. Greatly enhanced by the careful remastering which renders the original recordings more vital and crisp, all contained in Paul Simonon’s iconic design, with a selection of bonus material, Sound System is the most important and unique box set to ever be released by the band.

Prompted by demand for a complete collection, Sound System is a powerful reminder of The Clash’s enduring legacy. It’s hard to think of a band before or since that have exerted such universal influence. The 1970s punk movement gave birth to some important bands, but none were more important than The Clash. Here were a band who pushed and broke musical boundaries, while fusing musical experimentation with a socio-political conscience. From their eponymously-titled debut album in 1977, the band incorporated elements of reggae, rap, jazz, dance, rockabilly and ska in their music. Their passionate, political agenda continues to inspire new fans and musicians alike. Indeed, the issues The Clash tackled are as relevant today as they were in the late '70s/early '80s. Dubbed “the only band that matters” in their heyday, the same could be said almost 40 years later.

"New York Voices lives up to its reputation as the most exciting vocal ensemble in current jazzÅ  to collect such quality voices in one group is rare enough, yet the real trick of New York Voices is how well they meshÅ " - Boston Herald

New York Voices, the internationally acclaimed vocal ensemble renowned for their seamless vocalizing and intricate jazz-influenced arrangements, release their long-awaited Christmas album Let It Snow September 24 on Five Cent Records. Highly anticipated by the group's international fan base, Let It Snow also tops off a special year, one that commemorates the quartet's 25th anniversary.

Let It Snow finds New York Voices - Kim Nazarian, Lauren Kinhan, Darmon Meader and Peter Eldridge - celebrating a host of traditional and sacred holiday classics as well as secular favorites. With the assistance of Grammy Award winning producer and engineer, Elliot Scheiner (Steely Dan, Eagles, Manhattan Transfer, Fleetwood Mac), the quartet has fashioned an album that honors beloved songs, while incorporating sophisticated jazz and swing elements.  Settings vary; a cappella performances mingle with robust arrangements featuring big band and studio orchestra accompaniment.

The result is a diverse program of holiday standards, performed with surprisingly fresh treatments.  The close harmony style that New York Voices embraces is a perfect sound for the holiday season. While the bulk of the arrangements are by founding member and tenor vocalist Damon Meader, additional orchestrators include Don Sebesky, Jorge Calendrelli, Pat Hollenbeck, and Michele Weir.

Let It Snow is a long time in coming.  As Meader notes: "We started adding Christmas tunes to our December concerts many years ago.  At first it was just a handful, but over the years, our holiday repertoire expanded.  In 2005, we were invited to tour with the Boston Pops for a full Christmas season.  This is when our book really took off, and we've been planning to record this CD ever since.  It took awhile, but we finally found the time and opportunity to make it happen!"

The CD starts off with the high impact big band arrangement of "Let It Snow," followed by a pairing of lush ballads, "Christmas Song - Christmas Time is Here." "O, Little Town of Bethlehem" is then given an old school big band treatment, reminiscent of the Count Basie Orchestra sound. A number of a cappella performances are also featured, including "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."  The intimate voices-only settings bring the artful NYV sound into full focus, contrasting effectively with the large ensemble pieces.

Other highlights include a rollicking rendition of "We Three Kings," and a more traditional treatment of J.S. Bach's "Sleepers, Wake!," which serves as a warm diversion from the jazz-based harmonies of the majority of songs.  A moody "ECM-esque" rendition of "O Come, All Ye Faithful" features Peter Eldridge as lead vocalist, surrounded by full orchestra and lush complementary group vocals.  Lauren Kinhan, Darmon Meader and Kim Nazarian, are all featured as lead vocalists on "The Merry Medley," a collection of three holiday favorites:  "The Man with the Bag," "I'd Like You for Christmas," and "Santa Claus is Coming to Town."

"I Wonder As I Wander" was first recorded by NYV in 1991 as part of a "cast of thousands" GRP Christmas Collection.  "We've continued to perform this one through the years, and we've always wanted to re-record this arrangement," says Darmon.  "I added a big band accompaniment, in a somewhat Gil Evans-esque style, which adds to the introspective mood of the tune."
Let It Snow wraps up with a high-energy rendition of "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," followed by a serene a cappella rendition of "Silent Night."

The internationally acclaimed vocal group has become renowned for their excellence in jazz and the art of group singing. Like the great jazz vocal groups that have come before, such as Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, Singers Unlimited and Manhattan Transfer, the foursome of Kim Nazarian, Lauren Kinhan, Darmon Meader and Peter Eldridge have learned from the best and taken the art form to new levels. Time Out Chicago has said of New York Voices: "We dare say there may be no better way to understand the wit and wink of jazz harmony than via these Voices."

The group has released nine CDs on various labels including GRP, RCA, MCG Jazz, Concord, and Palmetto. The group has also starred on two Grammy award winning albums: Count Basie Orchestra with New York Voices, Live at MCG and Brazilian Dreams (Paquito D'Rivera featuring New York Voices & Claudio Roditi). They've earned wide acclaim for their performances throughout the world at venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Blue Note (New York and Japan) as well as the opera houses of Vienna and Zurich, as well as the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Montreal Jazz Festival and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

In addition to their various college and high school workshops, NYV holds an annual vocal jazz camp at Bowling Green State University every August.  All four members are also active as solo vocalists, and have each released numerous recordings.
